  • A rare episode of the soap opera "The Edge of Night". Unusually well-directed for a late-1950s soapy, with some interesting camera angles. The print is obviously very beat-up, and possibly incomplete (though even back in the 1950s, daytime series had less minutes of actual show than prime-time series). The popular series aired from 1956 to 1984, but most of the pre-1978 episodes are lost. Please check your attic.

This is when you had REAL WOMAN . Woman who stayed home and took care of house and cooked you a real home meal . Not the feminism of 2 married people both working and never knowing what your doing. Kids were taught math and science and English . Not gay stuff . In Jesus Name

So did my mother. She watched this one, Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow, Secret Storm, Dark Shadows. All these soaps were on in our house in the 60s and 70s. RIP mom. These shows bring back so many memories.... of happier times.

The Edge of Night was SOOOOOO ahead of its time with all the crime stories. 20+ years later many other soaps would go there, but not nearly as well, imho ...

I just loved all that organ and piano music that was featured in these daytime dramas, and on occasion, I would play the theme song on the piano.

I didn't get to see this soap until the USA network reran some of the episodes from 1980's, I've been watching and am now in July of 1981, and I find the Edge Of Night to be the best daytime soap ever, and I'd add the best 30 minute soap ever too. Wish I had the money to start a classic soap channel, with the exception of today's episodes aired at night, I'd try to run as many soaps and as many episodes I could, and I'd on Saturday Nights either have short lived soaps, or specials (i.e. the two hour premiere of Loving), then on Sunday Nights for 5 hours, I'd want to air a special titled "Soap Stars on Game Shows" (where at least one of the celebrities is a soap panelist, or a soap special like Family Feud. I'd probably start with 1978 to the end on Edge Of Night if I could acquire it.

Love the nostalgia of this show being in black & white, like I'm a little girl again. I'm guessing they were actually aired live back then.

I really would love to see a lot more of The Edge Of Night . When I was a little girl every afternoon mom made sure thing's we're all done (housework) supper was on so when dad & the rest of the family made it home. Mom had my sister and I lay on the floor or the cough..since it was her time and she would watch all of her soaps. Really great times back then. So yes, if you can find more of the older one that would be awesome . Memories😊

      And call it that exactly!
      The BLACK & WHITE CHANNEL.
Run soaps and game shows from the 40s, 50s and 60s during the day; and b/w movies and film noirs at night.
Perhaps the various film and television archives and collectors would be willing to play ball and share their treasures for such a venture…

Starts out with a great deal of: 1) cigarette smoking, 2) alcohol, and 3) minutes of explanatory dialogue recapping everything that's happened recently, in case a viewer had missed some episodes and needed to get back up to speed with what had been going on.

The Edge of Night was aired live during its run on CBS from 1956 - 1972; they only saved the shows for 30 days then they 'wiped' them. Too bad they didn't record every episode like Dan Curtis did with Dark Shadows!

  • @ksol1460tv

Don't know if you would agree, but 50s soaps gave you a suggestion of mayhem without actually showing it. 60s and 70s soaps would show mayhem without gory details; and soaps through the mid 80s and 90s would show all the details of the murder or catastrophe that was taking place. It's why I kind of miss soaps up to the mid 70s, as I like and believe in subtleties in some things...

Paul Taubman was the organist and musical director for THE EDGE OF NIGHT since its April 1956 debut for many years of its run. His organ accompaniment would always reflect and help stage the various moods and/or plots of each scene. He also wore the same hat for THE GUIDING LIGHT, but he did it under a pseudonym so that he wouldn't be accused of conflicting interests, as both soaps ran on the same network. I believe that there were at least two or three other soaps on different networks that he provided music for as well. If I'm not mistaken, the organist Eddie Layton was known for doing the same thing at the same time...

The cigarettes are not only smoked they are used as props. I’m 61 and was born 3 years after this but I remember everyone smoking and drinking on tv. If you were leaving a party the host would offer you a last drink ‘ one for the road’. He or she would be up for libel today if they did that and there was an accident.

Then he goes to the door and is talking to himself. Look in the background and you can see it's a set , you can see the stage set. Funny
