When you first come across ABBA, it’s easy to perceive them as cheese. But delve more into the catalogue, listen more closely to the hits through earphones and you’ll realise that their music and production are timeless. They were WAY ahead of their time.

So many associate ABBA with disco, and nothing more...if you listen to their catalogue, beyond just their 'hits', they're so much more! The two gents, Benny & Bjorn have such a sense of melody and composition, and of course, the vocals of Agnetha and Anni-Frid are always spectacular. Eagle had such a trippy vibe to it. Loved this song from day 1.
If you'd like something that further showed their versatility & difference, try The Piper, and pay attention to the lyrics! It's almost sinister, but oh so catchy!
    Great reaction! Cheers.

Its a bit of a shame you missed the full original version. This edit was made when 'Eagle' was deemed suitable as the third single release from 'ABBA - the Album'. It had its own sequence in 'ABBA - The Movie' which is worth a look. Although it wasn't released as a single in the UK, it went to Number 1 in Belgium and was a hit in Germany, France, The Netherlands, Switzerland, South Africa, Austria and Japan as well.Never go for ABBA Edits guys, that's not how the group concieved the songs :)

Always pick the full version, guys. Luckily this audio version has most of the song.
If you're looking for an uptempo song, I recommend these:
    - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight). Pick the full version (4m50s).
    - Summer Night City. The regular version is fine, but the remastered version with an extra intro (4m18s) is better.
    - Voulez-Vous. The full album version (5m11s).
    - Lay All Your Love on Me.
If you want something really different and surprising, check these out:
    - I'm a Marionette. Very theatrical.
    - My Mama Said. The closest they got to R&B.
    - Watch Out. Glamrock.
    - The Day Before You Came. Synth pop.
That said, don't discount the major hits:
    - Dancing Queen
    - The Winner Takes It All
    - Chiquitita
    - Take a Chance on Me
    - The Name of the Game
    - Super Trouper

Try "The Name Of The Game" from the same album as "Eagle", "The Album" (the Californian album as I call it and a Great One !). "The Name Of The Game" is one of their most complex song the girls both have a lead on this one. "The Name Of The Game" was also sampled by The Fugees, yes The Fugees in "Rumble in The Jungle" czcams.com/video/Ok6fmRt6MvU/video.html They got the "OK" from Bjorn and Benny. With Madonna, there are the only artists who got the authorization to sample ABBA.
ABBA has MANY famous fan and influence them like Kurt Cobain, Foo Fighters, John Frusciante, Peter Cetera, Chris deBurgh, Portishead, Pete Townshend, Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols stole the riff of "SOS" in "Pretty Vacant", Elvis Costello used one piano line from "Dancing Queen" in "Oliver's Army", Joe Strummer from "The Clash", Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin (they recorded their last studio album at Polar Studios (ABBA's studio in Stockholm), Justin Hayward from "The Moody Blues" < the last 3 were at one of their 6 Wembley Arena concerts in 1979...
ABBA is a music to listen closely. Like Classical Music it is very rich, the more you listen, the more you hear new things... Try again "SOS" and pay attention.

Thanks so much for checking this one out. It was one of my suggestions, as I thought you might like the more acoustic, prog-rock, ABBA. But this wasn't actually the full-length version which is even better again and has a great instrumental after the second chorus! The other songs you might enjoy are 'The Name of the Game', 'Knowing Me Knowing You', 'Hole in you Soul' (a real rocker), and 'The Visitors', the title track of ABBA's last album, an '80s electro-pop gem which saw the band really descend into the dark side. The song is about a Soviet dissident in the Cold War, waiting to be taken away by the KGB. Bjorn only admitted this many years later, and for a long time many listeners thought it was about an extraterrestrial visitation! The Guardian states that it's like ABBA doing Joy Division but making Joy Division sound like Jive Bunny in comparison! Finally, if you want to experience really 'far-out' ABBA, check out 'I'm a Marionette'. It's very different again....almost Gothic. The Swedish 'doom' metal band Ghost do a cover of it, but many Ghost fans indicate that they find the ABBA version even more scary. LOL.

Here is a selection of ABBA songs (2 songs by albums era)
After "Eagle" listen to "I'm a Marionette" (a very dark lyric about the puppetry that is the music industry. It conclude "The Album" with a great instrumental break. You also have the live version more heavy and faster pace prior to the album recording during their 1977 Tour in Australia czcams.com/video/hCxrAkHPyZQ/video.html)
From "Waterloo" album : "My Mama Said" and "Watch Out"
From "ABBA" album : "Hey, Hey, Helen" and "Intermezzo n°1" (instrumental)
From "Arrival" album : "Tiger" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You"
From "Voulez-Vous" album era : listen to the live version of "Summer Night City" czcams.com/video/e4swpxuHVTs/video.html (a sort of Heavy trance rock song) and of course "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" but the Live version that is a rocky funk (with a great Guitar solo instrumental break czcams.com/video/uTfdZwxr5a4/video.html)
From "Super Trouper" album : "Me and I" and "The Piper" (a medieval sound and mysterious lyrics)
From "The Visitors" album : "The Visitors" (a great electro and dark theme lyrics), "I Let The Music Speak"
You will soon realised and repeat again "I never expect that from ABBA". People have a misconception of ABBA stuck with "Gold" and "Mamma Mia !" Musical and movies... ABBA is ironically categorised as disco-pop and "Happy Music" but in fact it is a genre of it own, you have pop, rock, metal, disco, funck, soul... and ABBA with dark and gloomy themes.
    Enjoy ;o)

Why don't you try their greatest rocking perfomarnce that is "Hole in your soul" the Wembley live version. That is certainly a major step up from What you have reviewed so far by Abba.

@@geofffield6655 in general, the studio versions are usually more polished, and that's true for every group, also for ABBA. But in the case of that song you should check it because Agneta delivers an incredible vocal performance. The logical election would be "Does your mother know" + "Hole in your soul", wich go both one after one together with no pause in the concert. A chance to see how good they were also on stage, and not just a studio product. Regards.

Take. Look at “The Winner Takes It All” the greatest break.up song of all time. Lyrics by Björn and lead singer Agnetha who had then recently divorced from each other. To me it is their best song ever

When I hear this song, I always think of The Hobbit, and the part where the eagles rescue Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves. Now, I don't know for sure but I have a feeling that you both might be Hobbit and LOTR fans (and if not then definitely one of you - K probably) so perhaps this might help you to see the song differently. The long version is the only one to listen to. Great vid and welcome to the world of Abba.

Long version is better with the trilling and overlay solo at the end. B&B would give A&A the lyrics. They wrote the music never a note down. Awseome tune and band. Knowing Me, Knowing You is their song of saying we are done back in the day.

Love when someone new discover music, here from casuality, and very surprised about your rections!!! So, as you came into ABBA's world, is good to find to see reactions for the same hits, you can try songs like The Visitors, I'm A Marionette, When All is Said and Done, Me and I, Hole in Your Soul... All fantastic songs and good to hear for the first time... Oh, listen the ling and original version of Eagle, far better than this shortened version... Saludos desde Argentina, suscriptor nro. 226!!!
