  • It’s been a busy time as always, too many late nights and very early mornings for the sake of the birds, and saving their lives.
In the most upsetting recent rescue, a cygnet was reported as being badly tackled by fishing line. The lovely man who reported it gave such a clear explanation that I knew it was an emergency so I went straight out and was quickly joined by Jackie as we have a two person rule for all detackles.
As soon as the baby was in my hands, it was obviously way too serious to even be attempted on site to I set off to take little one into care for urgent medical care. The baby has had intensive care and extensive treatment, and he seems to be recovering well, but we still cannot be certain he will pull through. We can only hope.
I’ve had some lovely visits with the swans and geese, something I’ve missed in recent weeks due to so many rescues (and having to work the day job too), but these last few days I’ve been able to give the flock some proper time and it’s been great. No tackled birds there for a few days either, thankfully!
Today at Willen we had a real team effort with four of us out to feed and check the flock, as well as meeting and greeting any members of the public who were interested in the swans or wanted to ask questions. We gave out free bags of floating swan feed to the children, leaflets about who we are and what we do to the adults, and educated as many people as we could. It was a really good event and we plan to repeat it monthly.
We responded to a call about a baby pigeon and did our best, but the tiny little thing slipped away wrapped in a towel held by Stacey as I was rushing to get it into the foster home that was ready and waiting… but this led to us conveniently being in the right place at the right time to rescue a tiny duckling from an overflow and reunite it with its mama ❤️
Then it was off to Caldecotte for a flock check, but we had not long arrived when a report of tackled cygnets came in so odd we rushed again, only to find it was a false alarm as all was well.
Finally it was time for Syd and Wilma to get some attention, those cygnets have grown so much! We did have a bit of an issue with people trying to dump unwanted cooked food at the lakeside and dealt with it, but suspect this will be an ongoing issue…
