I have one piece of advice for all collectors. No matter what it is you collect, if you are buying something to keep for yourself, just get what you personally enjoy. Don't worry about if it will ever be valuable to someone else.
Yeah, that wasn't my point. It's not value, it was collectability, which is different. Collectability can make an item hard to find at its original cost if the demand is higher than the supply. That's why the Mystery machine set is so hard to acquire.
I'm equally as disappointed about the crew dialog not having movie clips. It doesn't make sense. They paid for the licensing to make this set, but there must have been some copyright issues that prevented them from adding those sounds. I may make a custom car to add to my set with a Bluetooth speaker, so I can play the movie sounds that should have been on this set. On an interesting side note, I showed you my Wonka set at Allentown right after I bought it. Thanks for not spoiling my excitement by telling me about the failed crew talk. Although I was disappointed at first, the set is still a cool train that I'll keep forever. Great review as always Sean.
When I got Lionel’s Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary Express set earlier this year, I bought the two add-on cars at the same time.
I bought this set and the clear Gobstopper tank car to go with it just based on the paint work alone! Excellent color and graphic design. I like how the smokestack is painted to look like Willy Wonka's hat. It runs and smokes beautifully!

Hi Sean, I think you have made a small error. This train set is based on the upcoming movie "Wonka". That is the logo and scripting on the cars. I believe that is also why it doesn't have dialogue from the original movie, and since this came out before the new movie (both movie and train I'm guessing were in production at the same time). I'm also guessing the 2323 is in reference the new movie in 2023.
Oh, that is interesting. That would make sense! Did not even think of that new movie. They should have waited until it came out and added clips from that movie then! Still looks like the old one.
Actually, relooking at everything it all matches the original movie I just watched it again the other night), even the pictures on the add on tank car box have the Original Oompa Loompa who is unmistakable. I think it probably works for both movies.
Nice review of this set. I’m an HO guy, but because the original Wonka is my favorite movie, I’ve bought this and the extra cars. I wish the Chocolate Factory accessory didn’t get cancelled. Hopefully this is a successful set so we’ll see more cars in the future?? I’m also disappoint that there isn’t sound bites from the movie. It would have been great to hear, “A little Nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men”, “Oh, you should never, never doubt what nobody is sure about” and “We have so much time and so little to do. Strike that. Reverse it!”
It's always hard to know. Lately these type of themed sets seems to be once and done. We shall see!

It’s a cool set. Yeah, some Gene Wilder lines would have been amazing. I had wanted to order it but decided not to. Im sure I will regret it later.

Not my cup of tea to be honest, makes me glad I bought my UP Lionchief set a few years ago for $250.
Makes me wonder what they could do with all that licensing money if it was funneled into the Traditional O line instead? New locomotive designs? A line of affordable rolling stock to compete with Menards, maybe?

Everyone is assuming this is for the original movie. December 23 is the release date for the New Wonka movie with Timothee Chalamet as Willie Wonka So I would say this set was made for the launch of that film. and it sounds like Timothee's voice or close too. So I would say this isn't for the old original Willie Wonka and the chocolate factory movie
Yeah, you are right. It looks like Lionel played a 2 for one deal. Released this right before the new movie with the Engine # matching the date, but also used original photos on the packaging from the original movie. I guess they thought it would work for both Original and New Movies and appeal to both buyers. Probably why no movie specific clips. Although most people seemed to be disappointed by the lack of original sounds from what I am seeing posted out there.
Perhaps if you run the train in reverse the tender light turns on? The tender is electrified only for sound?
No, I checked to make sure, and I wasn't expecting it to light on a Ready to Run Set.
Very interesting movie fantasy to model in train set, Sean. I never really liked the movie, but then I only saw it, or parts of it, on tv. I wonder if there's something in the pipe that this is going to be a Christmas tv movie this season. It may be that 'The Polar Express' has run out of steam for now. Interesting though it may be, I think horn could become a little annoying after awhile. Just my reaction. I could be a very popular set to own.
The new movie, Wonka, is coming out next month. So could be good timing.
While I fully understand keeping cost down, I wish they made a ready to run set with a LionChief Plus 2.0 engine. I know the cost would be more but I would like to have the better features in those engines. I'm looking to build an O scale layout and maybe it would be better to buy the track and transformer outright and grab a better engine. What would you guys do?
The Ready to runs are really geared towards kids. If I were you, I would start with Lionchief 2.0 engines/sets. They are the lowest cost and still have the full features. Then you could move to Legacy later on.
@@seanstraindepot thank you for the info! If I buy the 2.0 engine set, is there a particular track and transformer setup I should start with? I'm coming from an HO setup from many years back. I'd like a combination that I can expand on years to come.
They will work on any O scale track system. All have pluses and minuses to them. Get a quality transformer. The ZW-L is one of the best but close to 1000.00 and maybe overkill. A more reasonable one is the MTH Z4000. They recently had another run done and they are readily available for now. But if that is too much both Lionel and MTH have more basic transformers, just a lot less power. Depends on if you want to future proof for expansion in the future. You want electronic protection for the engine, so a modern transformer.
I'd like to know the real reason from Lionel themselves Why this set doesn't say any of the quotes from the movie or play the famous song from the movie I believe once people see this video. That's gonna be what keeps people from buying this set Because, as good as this set looks when people find out that this set doesn't play any of the quotes from the movie or the famous song. That's what's gonna keep people from buying it. I don't know if it was a licensing issue or what but Lionel screwed up big time with the announcements on this set. I think this may be for the New movie coming out and that's why no clips. Someone mentioned that and that would make sense.
Actually, the smoke driven fans in locos aren't accurate at all. Steam locomotives when running properly, don't smoke hardly at all. It is the fireman's responsibility to give the engine man just enough oil or coal without clogging the tubes with smoke. Mike Wolf always had a problem with Lionel's lack of billowing smoke, and when he quit Lionel his MTH trains burned like a forest fire. Even his diesels smoked profusely. If you see a diesel smoking in the wild, it is worn out and needs to be rebuilt. If you go to a layout and you see an engine smoking way too much, it'll be Mike's. I'd never own a Mike's.
Yeah I was thinking about that the other day lol. The ready to run engines makes the cool smoke rings haha.
