Hogan: "I asked the men to explode the T's, and make more of a percussive sound" (paraphrased, of course) Chorus: "Joshua fit the baddle, the baddle of jericho!"
i love how you can see the audience smiling throughout this performance. i feel like most people watch choirs with a somewhat serious expression, but there's an infectious happiness here
Moses is a genius. I love how the section have their own important parts while the rest create a "conflict" as moses put it with makes this piece go together really well. It also creates the energy needed to have a stronger effect on the important parts. (Think battle drums for the backup, the battle horn as the important part.)
There is so much of the right kind of energy in this performance. It is a shame that they were missing the "baTTle articulation that the composer wanted. It would have been so effective from this group.
This one of the best performances of Hogan's arrangements that I heard. I love how the men kept that sixteenth note going. We call that the "sugar daddy' in funk music. And the conductor really got into it.
When Moses demonstrated that, he accented the b's rather than the t's. I think he was mistaken when he said 't'. The 'b' makes more sense, musically (or rhetorically if you will).
My all time favourite Negro Spirtual... Thanks Moses Hogan for this wonderful arrangement. I'm crying at the end of the piece. The Power of the Lord is really undeniable... The Battle is in My Hand!!!
If genius is defined as someone who establishes a precedent that will be and artistic appreciated and recognized into the future, than Moses Hogan fits the bill.
Prepping for my second concert featuring this piece, and DANG. I love singing it SO MUCH. It's genuinely challenging, both in notes and in style, but the challenge pays off in an absolute roller coaster. I would sing this all day every day. Thank you, Moses Hogan!
Note how he mentioned how he desired the song to sound and the group did the exact opposite 😂 We laughed at this in chorus the other day, but that doesn't mean that they didn't do great.
+TheVgonz123 I know, I just think it's funny how that comes from the man who composed the song himself and it just comes out completely differently lol.
Brilliant arrangement, pure talent from Moses Hogan. I’ve listened to many choirs sing it and I think the _BYU Singers_ have the best performance and recording of this arrangement (in their album of spirituals _I Believe this is Jesus_ ). It’s just masterful.
This song makes the hair on my arms stand up! Especially this choir singing it. No one is nasal no one is hitting wrong notes. no one in the audience is coughing. no one has a crying baby in the audience, this place they sung in had GREAT reverb. There is alot more good qualitys to this performance than bad so STOP hating!! (I'll find you JK ;P)
In 2016 the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square took this piece on tour in Europe. I believe we worked harder on this than any other song in that program. It was absolutely electric each time we performed it, and was one of my best memories of the tour.
My Choir teacher was at in the audience at a concert, in which his choir was scheduled to perform at. An announcer came out, and said he had just died of a brain aneurysm. At least that's the story she tells.
2:29 - oops, basses! Someone came in a little to early! I like the emotion the tenors are putting into this. The women are excellent too. And that solo soprano sent shivers down my back!
I remember hearing this in my sister's choir, who actually sang with him as the conductor. This was in the fourth grade. I wanted to join chorus after listening to this specific song.

My choir director said the same thing lol
i love how you can see the audience smiling throughout this performance. i feel like most people watch choirs with a somewhat serious expression, but there's an infectious happiness here
R.I.P Moses Hogan
Breaks my heart that he passed away. Seriously, the man was musical genius!
This is one of the grooviest choir pieces I've ever heard. It just grooves so hard!
I enjoy this choir. I was honored to sing the with Moses' choir in Covington, LA a few years before his death. He was a beautiful, gentle genius.
1:49 - that lady is REALLY feeling the music! lol
Does anyone else see it in 2020? (like)
Absolutely see the walls tumbling down and the TRUMP is our trumpet
im in 2020
2021 baby!
Sorry, no, this is 2021 already! :-)
I was blessed to be direction by him! Rest in Power Mr. Hogan❤

that ending was great! I didn't hear the hard "T" that Moses wanted though but it still sounded great!
When Moses demonstrated that, he accented the b's rather than the t's. I think he was mistaken when he said 't'. The 'b' makes more sense, musically (or rhetorically if you will).
If this song have a hard T , it means God didn't wanna hear the song?
Geeez!!! this song gave me mad goosebumps!!!! I can't even begin to imagine how incredibly amazing this must have sounded live.
My all time favourite Negro Spirtual... Thanks Moses Hogan for this wonderful arrangement.
I'm crying at the end of the piece. The Power of the Lord is really undeniable...

"This is one of the grooviest choir pieces I've ever heard. It just grooves so hard!" Couldn't agree more!!
One of the greatest arrangment of Battle of Jeticho ever.
Thank you for giving us Moses Hogan.
This song brought tears to the judges eyes when we sang it for state festival. Long live Parkside High School Concert Choir!
The actual singing starts at 1:01 (for those who may want to replay just the music after hearing the arranger's dialog once).
i love how the second "the walls..." has more of an o sound, "the wolls.." it really makes it stand out. great piece!!!
Gives me goosebumps ever time I hear it
This was an awesome find!! I could listen to this all night!!
Thank you for sharing on CZcams!!!

WOW!!! GREAT CONDUCTOR!!!

He didn't direct these singers.

Who said that??
Oh, this should have been an answer to "TheVgonz123"
Same thing I noticed.
Großartig! Der Dirigent gibt bloß die Impulse, das Gefühl für das Lied wird ganz von selbst übertragen!
What a difference great choir direction makes! I could listen to the last 30 seconds for hours

This song will never get old to me... Just sung this song at my spring concert tonight and we did really good and the audience loved us!
I was blessed to work with Moses singing and recording with both the Chorale and Singers...He is sorely missed
2:44.....so very speechless. I'm singing this in vocal class but the harmony in the end just gave me this feeling like something is holding your soul.
The Master at work!!
Genius composer!!!!
a true New Orleanian musician that is the music that I kown and love from my city. R.I.P one of the greatest choral composers.

The dynamics at the end of this are just yummmmmy =D
I remember singing this version in high school. God bless Dr. Hogan. May he rest in peace.
Wonderful man!! I remember when my high school choir director announced to us that he died. So sad!
That conductor is awesome!!!

OH the MAGNIFICENT EMOTIONAL INTENSITY MATCHES THE MUSICALITY!
My Choir teacher was at in the audience at a concert, in which his choir was scheduled to perform at. An announcer came out, and said he had just died of a brain aneurysm. At least that's the story she tells.
His intelligence. He was suchh a gift to this world.
