Hey Joe, I was out west in Washington state. A machine shop was begging for a semi-competent machinist who would just show-up for work. They had been advertising for months.
About all I can remember is they were a few hundred feet west of Freya, and north of a
Metal recycler.
Good advice. I just left a shop a few month ago where we made these and other styles of curtain rods. The owner charged CRAZY prices for this stuff. We're talking a few hundred for a rod that took about 2-3 hours of labor and $40 of material. Very valid business.
Worst I did was a big S shaped one for around a column and atrium. Fortunately it was new construction so I built and bent on site. I can't imagine spending over a grand for a curtain rod, but hey, happy to have the work.

@@brianpatrick8441 dude have you looked at how expensive just a basic rod is? I wanted to get a couple after renovating a bathroom and they were 40-80 bucks for anything that looked anywhere near as good as these with some paint. Let alone to a custom length. Most of them have janky ass brackets too with that baseplate design. 100-150 would be an easy sell for a custom piece, maybe more, and it's not a hard thing to make.

As a blacksmith I could easily forge the second thing. The bent rod. I’d probably just bend and flatten the bottom and hot punch a hole for ease and because hand forged things are unnecessarily expensive lol. I saw someone charging and selling tons of brake dye for shelves they forged by bending the end so it could go on the wall and punching 4 holes total. Selling 2 packs for 30$ they take maybe 10 minutes if your taking your time. And decorative s hooks are easy to make and sell fast for 5-10$ each for a 3 minute project great vid

Great video! I have a couple tips I'd liked to pass on too.
1. A good porta-band saw will make your project so much easier and quicker. And will pay for it self very quickly with the time you save.
2. When you're sanding on a radius, go with the radius as opposed to against it. It will preserve your radius instead of flattening it out.

A tube bender like something from jd2 or a hossfeld would be a good investment for those bends if you do enough of them

If they did, it would help eliminate scabs, and low bid hacks. I go through the same thing with our plumbing trade. Even though you have to go to plumbing school for four years consecutively, while working full time with a master plumber.
Well after trade school you should finish some economic or bussines college and you are good to go :) . At least tha's what i did

Trade schools(especially Union) are run and financed by the contractors and wont train their eventual competition. Trade schools want you to become a cloned robot and work for the Man.

If you plan on doing projects like this I would recommend learning to mig. Its easier than stick and your production efficiency will improve.
Mig has the best cost/speed/ difficulty ratio for any production stuff, but I like tig cuz its shiny

one of the few tools where buying new is probably the best idea. Many used torches have been beat to hell, leak, etc. You might get lucky though

So do you paint or powdercoat them or simply clean the grease, dirt and oil off and sell then uncoated?
however the customer wants. In most cases a shop will have a guy doing their in house work and they'll paint them. I'm happy to paint, but most don't want to pay my shop rate for me to do so.

First time seeing your channel and like it so far. Now if I can just learn how to weld better like that. Maybe my welder sucks or its just total inexperience. In time I guess. Need a buddy that can do stuff like this and show me the ropes. Nice work
Peter Last you just have to make sure you have it dialed in right for the thickness of material. I make large steel tanks for concrete/aggregate industry. I’m not sure what type of stuff you are welding up but a general setting for me at work is 25.4 and about 3.5-4 on wire. That’s running flux core tho. Non flux settings are a bit lower but just do some messing around on test pieces and it will make a big difference in your welds. And of course if you are just starting out your welds won’t be the best.. none of ours are. That comes with time. Practice practice practice 👍🏻
Jason Schrantz I am brand new at welding. I have a Lincoln weld pak hd just to weld things around the house as I learn. It is flux core but my settings are only 1-10 feed and two buttons high and low with numbers 1 and 2.
I've been using it set at wire 5.5 and the two buttons on high. I get the wire feed is about speed but idk the high and low buttons and really how or where to set them. As an example I was welding a broken stem to a floor jack maybe a 1/2" bolt rod that broke. Tip kept sticking to the weld and I tend to get balls of metal rather than poured dimes. Maybe the work is too small and I can't keep a consistent puddle going generally. Frustrating stopping over and over due to wire sticking to what I'm welding. Thoughts? Keep practicing right? Lol

What kind of media are you using in your tumbler? Is it course enough to remove marks left from the saw blade or just remove the burrs? I've been using a grinder to remove burrs and saw marks before painting but this looks much faster and easier. Thanks!

What size washers and pipe are you using for the inside mounting hardware? Also what size pipe are you using for the curtain to slide into?
Whatever is needed for the application. Generally 1/2 rod into 3/4 pipe with 1" washers. Pipe is measured ID

Great video. In your opinion, what is the best way to learn to weld as someone just learning for hobbyist? I'm handy guy but have no experience welding. I'm building a motorcycle I need to weld a few. I have a flux 125 because I didn't have the money to invest in something I wouldn't use nearly as much. I've been practicing but I can't get a good bead to save my life.
Honestly, for a motorcycle, I'd pay someone, the risk/reward is way off.
But as for learning, it's just a matter of practice. Get clean metal, weld, repeat.
@@42Fab paying someone is totally possible but part of my reason of this build is to learn the new skills. I'm using clean metal have tried every wirespeed and follow directions to the letter and just get spatter. Should I just invest in something better than a flux core harbor freight special? I was trying to avoid the variable of shield gas which is what led me down the flux route. Thanks for the response I really appreciate it
I should clarify that only one of the welds I will be making a structural. The rest will be fabbing non load-bearing parts

You need a class. And probably a different machine.
Wire feed fluxcore is probably one of the easiest ways to weld things.

It's an oxy acetylene setup. You'll need gas bottles, best purchased from your local supplier where you'll get your gas refilled.

You should have recommendations from the manufacturer for the best end result

I don't know about save, but I agree, when you can, bring it home. There are things that make sense to make abroad, but to mine our resources, ship them away, only to reimport them as finished goods is a nightmare.

HOW do you market your service? WHERE do you customers learn about your products? WHAT is your marketing strategy? please describe the efforts you took to get your 1st handful of customers? IF I have all the same equipment, and have made hundreds of parts sitting in inventory, it does me no good if no one calls. What is the method to get someone calling you?
I've covered these in some depth on patreon videos, may here in future. You shouldn't be holding inventory

@@oneandonlylean Welding puts out lots of UV rays and can give you skin cancer though. And if you do a lot of welding it can lead to skin cancer. You can just use gloves when you do both processes. Oh and wear a long sleeve shirt.

Could you just look at a price of a curtain rod at a store and set a similar price on your custom ones?
yes, but selling something like this to the consumer means inventory, display room, sales, etc. Selling to someone already doing that means less margin for you, but at a much better return

Also, know what your product is worth. You wouldn't want to look at something on Amazon or from Walmart and price match. Custom and designer window treatment showrooms charge a good deal more but for much better products.

@@42Fab for welding the outside of the brackets, do you weld at all on the inside or just the outside, and how smooth do you grind it? Just asking because it seems it wouldn’t be strong enough if you just welded the outside and grinded it, I’m thinking of calling around and then making a jig for these.

@@quickshot4050 you do not need to weld the inside, but a tack wouldn't hurt. I would deliver if convenient, otherwise they're picking them up.
