Very late comment, but I just wanted to comment as a Japanese person about the voice casting of this anime.
The thing that caused me to watch this anime was the fact that this anime was created with the help of (I think) Yoshimoto, a huuuge Japanese talent agency for comedians. The two comedians are voiced by an actual pretty famous comedian duo called ダイアン(Daian), and their situation is kind of similar to the one in the anime (Their radio show is pretty popular among hard core fans, they came from Oosaka and are trying to make it big in Tokyo, one of them is known as the "funny one" while the other is more popular on variety TV shows for his personality).
The two police brothers are also voiced by a famous comedian duo, ミキ(Miki), and guess what? They're actual brothers!
I think the Izakaya (or pub? bar?) women is also voiced by a famous comedian as well.
While I'm not typically a fan of celebrities doing voice acting for clout, it was pretty cool in this case cause the comedians had an authentic Oosaka accent and sounded really natural doing the manzai (the comedy routine they did at the end).
Anyways, that was just a little fun fact that I wish more people knew because I am a Daian fan lol.
That's really cool actually. No wonder the dialogue felt so natural, it was one of my favorite parts of the show
Now I kinda regret watching the show in dub...
Thanks sir, your comment really made me appreciate the characters and voice acting much much more than I would have otherwise
Thanks for sharing

@@khadeerdudekula7168 What did u end of thinking of it?
With the story being as complex and character-focused as it is, I believe that making everyone a simplistic animal was a genius move. It is pretty hard to make a memorable character design, especially if your story is pretty grounded, but if everyone's an animal - you'll not forget them at their basic level. Every character in the show has their own vibe, profile, and colourscheme, making every character stand out and be remembered in your psyche
Basically you just describe ...(spoiler)... ability.

Just finished Odd Taxi and my God what an incredible anime! Absolutely Spectacular! Honestly I did not see the ending and the twist coming and the ending was incredible. Absolutely the best anime of the year so far!
I figured it out the moment she said she was 4th place
you had me at "individual character stories that intertwine in interesting ways" I'm a huge fan of this plot style & it neeeeeeeeds to become it's own genre. Baccano & Durarara do this & I have so much fun watching them
Honestly, the animal designs Really helped to make the show more engaging. With so many plot threads & subtle visual cues, the eye catching & easily identifiable character designs were a massive help when keeping track of everything that was going on
That was literally the point. The protagonist had the ability to identify people he met before so accurately, precisely because of how uniquely distinguishable they were to him due to his condition. We as viewers share his point of view and benefited from this ability alongside him. The stylistic choice had a practical function both in the viewability of the anime but also in the telling of the story story and as a plot device. Incredibly smart.
As a bonus, something that is often overlooked is how the main character is self aware about how he views people to a point where when he took in a stray cat he was only about 98% sure that it was, in fact a, cat . This is why he was so reluctant about telling anybody about its existence and how relieved he was when it actually appeared as a cat at the end.
@@Mike23443 my god when he said "oh, still a cat" That left such a BIG question of "well....what did you think before this?" and what was his motivation before?? Amazing storytelling and writing.

It was
I was so so afraid that it was gonna be a crappy dub (Crunchyroll dubs can be very hit or miss) but I was so glad to wrong
Some characters' performances felt a little hit or miss but even then the voices were completely on point. I loved how every character sounded the whole way through.
"I know these animal character designs aren't the most appealing things in the world."
Bruh wdym, so many of them are adorable
I know right!? Like not even just the mains but like even every background character looks so damn cute!
True! i was using pause all the time in the background "people" and all of them was so cute!
People are just afraid of being considered a furry if they are too furry friendly. It's just insecurity. You can totally like a show with furry characters and not be furry the same way I can like a show with goth characters and not be goth.

That was a perfect open ending to be honest. Not all stories have to end with every single plotline wrapped up nicely, and the way this anime dared to end the story with the very last plotline hanging like that was masterful.
@@kayabutter2883 but I need to know whether my cutie Odokawa is safe from that bitch or sth. Ending like that is a pain for me
I don't think they're ever going to fully answer the question, but imo a lot of things point to her being caught. There is Odokawa mentioning calling the police a couple times, the fact that she is talking about getting rid of another one of her partners from the idol group while holding *that* pen, and the symbolism of the green light for Odokawa at the end of the intro to name a few off the top of my head.
Now, whether she gets caught before or after trying to carry out her plans for Odokawa..... Well, that is less clear, but I hope he got a happy ending too.
@@gsgaming6976 my head canon says that shirakawa jumped out of the bushes and saved odokawa again using Capoeira. Not long after, the police came and arrest that bitch. She got sentenced to life in prison. In prison, the father of the girl she murdered got help from the yakuza boss to send someone to choke her in the shower. No one cares, cause she showed no remorse up to that point. After that, everyone can move on. The end.

Just casually gonna like this comment.
I, too, was wary about being lured into watching another anime love letter to the furry community where all the characters constantly have to talk about what animal they are and hunter-prey dynamics of the ecosystem. I was originally hooked by the edgy premise IN SPITE of what it seemed to be. Then I watched a few episodes, made meticulous note about the lack of any undesirable conversation/plot topics, and pretty much figured out one of the major twists about 2 episodes in.
It's done in a really clever way. Even Odakawa's physician asks what he looks like to him in a potentially-rhetorical question and doesn't correct him when Odakawa says he looks like a gorilla, which could also be a way to describe somebody who is large in stature and usually quite muscular.
That chekov’s gun analogy was exquisite. Like even in the last episode when I thought the gun has shot all of it’s ammo, I didn’t expect they shot it just one more time and it fucking bangs
Animal heads have a purpose: they help to remember the complicated cast of characters as well as our taxi driver does.
Wait, this actually make sense.
Exactly. It would've been so hard to keep track of them all if they'd all been the usual generic human anime characters (though their actual human designs were pretty cute.)
Yeah, (spoilers ahead)
After they turned human I could recognize them but I don't remember any of their human faces, nor will I be able to remember them like that.

@@vasilis23456 to be fair, we did only get to see them for a fraction of an episode. But I agree that in a lot of shows with a large cast it takes me a lot of episodes to memorize their faces. This wasn't an issue here because of the very distinctive designs.

I find it a really big "whatever"
I learned about this anime when you discussed it on the podcast. When I watched the first few episodes, I thought it was just a slice of life where they portray human's struggles through animal characters. I'm thinking that it's just a wholesome anime where they will teach you a lesson at the end. But oh boy, I was wrong. When I watched the episode about the gacha gamer, I realized that this is not a wholesome slice of life anime. It is a mystery thriller. That episode really hook me up on continuing the series. I also noticed that there are some inconsistencies in their world. At first, I thought that maybe the studio doesn't notice that. But my god! It is a chekhov's gun!
OddTaxi feels like what Durarara was meant to be.
I really enjoyed Durarara 2011. It kind of left me hanging with and ending that didn't feel like an ending, but every character had a purpose and it was cool to see thier stories intertwine. Durarara x2 however, spiraled out of control after a coulpe of episodes and then desperately tried to get back on track, not resolving a single plot point in the procces. The story simply grew larger than what the author could possibly handle. And its such a shame. I really wish they focused on a shorter, but more satisfying and conclusive story.

Thanks for making video on this otherwise I might've missed this masterpiece. There's so much going through every episode, it's truly a miracle that everything tied up so brilliantly.
Fun fact: This video currently has 4 times more views than members for Odd Taxi on MAL.
The Pacing of the show is probably the smoothest i 've seen in years since Mob Psycho 100. I knew Grant would make a decdicated Video on it, didn't expect it to be his AOTY. I still have to your Eternity as mine, but hope this gets this show the recognition it deserves.
What does aoty mean?
@@gamu1651 anime of the year
damn bro we have the same taste wtf
For me it has to be Fruits Basket Season 3... The conclusion was just so brilliant
I'm holding off judgement, but my AOTY is juggled between so many different shows right now-
Like I haven't even watched half of the things that are contenders (did see ODDTAXI, definitely high up there as a contender).
It's been a while since I legit got goosebumps from an ending.
(last time being AOT season 3 part 1)
No other grand reveal in anime has ever slapped my brain so hard.
10/10
just fucking watch it.
Good news: Odd Taxi is getting a film and its releasing by April 1st, 2022
It may not be season 2 or specials but its a good piece to add in the mix anyway.
You know what Garnt? You've convinced me... I'm going to go watch Vivy. Looks crazy!
Absolute gem, mate. Absolute gem...
I normally don't do this, but give us an update on how you're enjoying Vivy. Was my favorite of last season and I dragged my friends into watching it and they loved it too.

I swear if 90% of the internet wasn't like "furry bad" then this show would be 420x more popular than it is right now
Yes unfortunately
That's exactly what a furry would say =_= **sharpens skinning knife**
Furries are cringe but this seems cool
Not blaming them tbh. This show is great but i can see people turn off because of the furry thing
@@hahalery Honestly when I looked for the responses of OddTaxi on twitter the furries had already taken over with nsfw drawings. I was kinda disappointed since the anime was so great and that kind of attention would most likely turn people off the show.
I started watching this anime when i heard gigguk mention it in a clip, and actually paying attention to the details really makes the unfolding of the narrative more satisfying. I was paying attention to the opening a lot and I actually discovered what the mystery "something" Odokawa had in his apartment. It all connects in the end and it was mind blowing for me.
When I first saw this video I stopped it before completely finishing it because I wanted to give ODDTAXI a chance first. OMG This has to be one of the best made anime of all time. Such a great recommendation! The way everything came together at the end was so well done. The last time I was this impressed with the writing was Mob Pyscho 100.
You should read the writer for Odd Taxi's manga Setoutsumi, it definitely shows where the stellar realistic writing came from and the chekov gun in the manga at the ending maaaan, had to read it all again
As a writer, Odd taxi is something I would like to create in the next 5 years
So, first you need to develope cronic fear of Loose Ends and you will get there
Same.

You described the writing as "hitting uncomfortably close to home".
Maybe they used animal designs, because human designs would have been downright distressing...

@@thelightsilent MB was praising Odd Taxi way at the start ofif the season.
@@thelightsilent Both Gigguk and MB said they liked this show at the beginning of the season. Also, Crunchyroll themselves might do English CZcamsr sponsorships, but most of the anime industry act like they don't exist lol.
Just finished watching Odd Taxi and I must say this is one of the next anime series I’ve seen in my life and I’ve been watching anime since 2003.
Agree with all of your points in this video and if I were to describe what hit me most in this show is that it really told an engaging story about people who continue to live with their sins because they can’t or won’t stop the vices that they’ve entangled themselves with.
I remember your video saying you were looking foward to this show, I was glad you were shedding light on such a great show. I had started watching it randomly when I saw the thumbnail on crunchyroll when the first episode released. Now I see you did this video, awesome 💯
This anime was a masterclass of a mystery anime. The show literally distracts you and then throws the its premise you forgot about right at your face in the final minutes.
I love how Garnt brings up the animal "furry-looking" visuals of the anime and how it makes people stray away from it but it genuinely means the show successfully threw people off like the whole idea of the story. It makes the audience get distracted by something else for an entire episode and then throws the main point at you and it hits you like truck-kun.
After watching this I looked up Garnt or Joey's review but couldn't find one. Here it is I guess. Finally the show will get the attention it fucking deserves.
So.... you mean the animal characteristics wasn't a Chekhov's gun in disguise?
@@thelightsilent that doesn't change the facts that this anime is great and your dad won't come back from buying cigarettes
@@thelightsilent it's actually because the shows just ended a week ago... so they made a video about it since the ending was satisfying enough.

The fact that I read your comment before watching the show...OMG
Jokes on you, I didn't.
This was a banger with all the points connected and every character fleshed out.
Thanks for putting it out in the spotlight.
It's something special when Fruit Basket final season, which has been damn near perfect, as well as Gugu's arc in TYE concluded on the same day - yet all I can think about was Odd Taxi's finale that day.

The opening got me interested in the series. I was planning to watch the anime eventually this season, but the day the opening release I was like ‘I need to watch this now!’ I was never disappointed.
I finished odd taxi today. It is without a doubt a gem. It's something you really have to see for yourself because it's such an experience. Thanks for recommendation Gigguk.
The designs gave me serious Usagi Yojimbo vibes. When a character is an anthropomorphized animal, it triggers our subconscious shorthand for broad personality types. In Odd Taxi the characters either lean into those preconceptions in fun ways or break them in startling ones.

One thing Gigguk has left out is that this show has phenomenal soundtrack. Every song stands out and sounds unique, but still perfectly underlines the scenes, and doesn't become obnoxious. Every part of this anime is astonishing
This show, right off the bat, captured me in a way not many other shows had in a looong time. Everything about it felt so genuine. Every character was pretty fleshed out, nobody was over-acting (except maybe Yano) or over-reacting, the relationships between the characters felt real and dynamic, and you got a good sense of what almost every single character was really like and going through. This show didn't try too hard to stand out. It's down-to-earth all the way around with a story that somehow gets more and more wild as you watch it.
I forced all of my friends to go watch it, and every single one who actually listened to me doesn't regret it. It's my AOTY; it's in my top 5 anime; and it's definitely my favorite mystery show. After episode 6, my friend and I started spending at least half an hour after each episode discussing what happened and what could happen next, since there was actually that much to discuss.
Is this the only anime u watched this year?
Before I give some long-winded list of the shows I've actually watched, please take a moment and realize what you've just asked. You have asked me if my opinion was valid on the basis of the quantity consumed, which is a non sequitur on matters of taste. Food critics really enjoy black truffles as an ingredient, but it's clearly an inferior ingredient to McDonald's chicken paste because less of it is consumed, based on what you were saying.
Alright, now to the list (that you *totally* asked for in good faith):
Ijirinaide Nagatoro-San, Sentoin Hakenshimasu, that one really bad Full Dive RPG anime, Shadows House, Promised Neverland s2, Dr. Stone: Stone Wars, ODDTAXI, Mushoku Tensei, Tensei Slime S2 p1, Tensura Nikki, Beastars s2, Hige Wo Soru Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou, Log Horizon s3, 86, VIVY: Fluorite Eye's Song, Re: Zero s2 p2, Horimiya, The Saint's Power is Omnipotent, a drunken viewing of Redo of Healer with some friends that I barely recall, To Your Eternity, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Slime Taoshite 300-nen.
@@crashcoptr That’s a pretty good list, and I don’t blame you for having Odd Taxi as your #1, however, if you haven’t seen 86 or To Your Eternity, I’d highly recommend those. Out of all the shows you listed, combined with everything I saw on my own, they’re the only ones I’d put above Odd Taxi
@@crashcoptr That's a nice and intense list.
@@nice_gamingfunnymomentsxd4011 I've watched both. Odd Taxi is my AOTY, but there are a lot of contenders for the decision. To Your Eternity is absolutely heartwrenching, but it seems like it's going to keep repeating the same formula after Gugu's arc, which I don't think makes for compelling storytelling in the long run. 86 is the same, but I feel that it's a bit rushed in the end, compared to the excellent pace set for the first half of the story.
To actually respond, I feel the flaws of those shows weigh them down more than Odd Taxi's flaws do for itself. That's entirely personal taste, though, and I absolutely see the merit in placing 86 or To Your Eternity higher.
"a lot of people thought this was just a live action drama in disguise "
Gigguk, you cheeky bastard
I shouldn't say **anything**.....
The whole time watching this i was like: wtf is this really good? And then i remember Garnt is the one making this then i was like fuck it i’m watching this. And as usual IT’S FUCKIN GOOD. From Vinland Saga and a place further than the universe. He never misses with the recommendations
When you did the little segment on Vivy, your last impersonation of "Okay then, guess I'm watching Vivy" was LITERALLY my reaction to that fighting scene. I was like "Okay, damn, guess I'm watching this show, holy hell."
"I know these animal character designs aren't the most appealing things in the world"
Bruh, this shit's way more instantly interesting to me than them just all being regular looking, generic anime people.
