Taking On Steep 4WD Tracks In The WALHALLA Area.

  • The 4WD tracks around the Walhalla area are very challenging, so make sure you are up for it as a driver and you know what your 4WD can do in this kind of terrain.
The Vic High Country 4x4 tracks are very steep, and some of the steepest tracks in Australia.
Walhalla has a lot steep 4x4 off road tracks.
The Walhalla area has a lot of fun 4x4 tracks to drive. As long as you have a well set up 4WD to handle the extreme action you might face, and you as the driver have a fair amount of 4x4 off road driving experience in steep country.
The amount of long, steep 4x4 tracks in the Vic High Country is just one of the things i like about getting out on the tracks in my well set up GU Nissan Patrol.
The steep 4x4 tracks in the Walhalla area, need to be treated with a great deal of respect.
Research the tracks that you plan to drive, and know where you are going.
The 4x4 tracks in this part of the Vic High Country are very steep, and it's not a matter of when you will find a steep nasty track, it's when.
So, when that happens, you had better make sure you are up for it.

Love this area and your videos. I go there as often as I can to pan for gold and you are absolutely right about being prepared. Last time I went down a track I haven't been down before by accident and it is pretty scary when you on your own with no winch. The track was getting narrower and narrower but I had to keep going as there was no way I could turn around. When I got close to the river I have met few guys winching up the hill and got few perplexed looks because I was in my Grand Cherokee and they had their jacked up 80s and Patrols. They couldn't believe I went down that track and neither could I. It was great fun and I hope I will meet you one day in the high country. Keep those videos coming.

Did an easy drive across the dam, down Merringtons and out through Toombon a couple of weeks ago (had her ladyship along, so no Flats Track, haha). On the return passed some cattle droving and when we stopped at the dam to pump tyres up, the car smelled like, well, shit. So I crossed the river on Beardmores, over and back, to wash it clean.
Pity you didn't do Beardmores up to Walhalla Rd - the river has water unlike most of the streams. Bit surprising, since it hasn't been that dry up there. Fulton's not as gnarly as last time we drove it, won't take too long for the IFS/traction control vehicles to tear it up again.
Walhalla is my favourite area, and it's easy reach from SE suburbs.

Interesting Tim that you say the car coming down hill has right of way due to being harder to reverse uphill... When I was in the Wagga 4wd club back in 1978-79 doing a lot of trips to the Dargo high plains and surrounding areas we always instilled in members to give way to the vehicle coming up hill as it is much harder to get going uphill again if stopped. The car coming down hill can generally see a car coming uphill easier and can pull off to the side to let the uphill car pass without stopping and then easily get going again as facing downhill.
