  • Tool Assisted Speedrun of Juzcook's amazing Invictus rom hack of Super Mario World! Every single level of this run is improved from the draft versions to some extent.
This is a tool assisted speedrun (TAS) which means it is completed using tools to sculpt every frame of gameplay to achieve this result. Whilst I built every frame of this run myself, this is not me playing, it is the instructions I wrote being played back.
Timing is from power on until last input to enter the credits level. I might try a second optimisation pass on this, but this is extremely close to the final time I can currently achieve.

Hey, I just watched the vod - it was so cool to hear your input, thank you so much! :D This was my very first attempt at TASing anything so I had to learn a lot about TASing and SMW speedrunning (I watch a lot but I found that didn't amount to much, lol) and the engine, and I tried to learn as much about the hack as possible so it was so really amazing to hear things I'd missed and be like "oh yeah... :o". I also loved hearing your reactions to all the swag I put in; I wanted to TAS because I love TAS swag and it really made my whole day seeing you watch it through with your stream. Thank you for all your kind words during the video, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!! :D
Just a few comments from watching:
      On sewer smashin':
You can't go under sewer smashin' - the water ends and you fall off.
At the end, I actually missed that I didn't get first frame out on the water in this final version, I do have versions with it in so I'm not sure what went wrong there - thanks!
Claustrophobia key jump you might be able to do, the second key jump is based on the fact that I found a sprite catch of some kind down there. I have no idea why it's there but if you could find a set up to drop it on it, there's no reason it shouldn't be possible. You can actually just stand down there on the key, in this version of the run I'm catching the key after it bounces.
On Lake Bodom you say there isn't a time save on the dolphin room, there is but it's tiny. If you start the room with a swim then move right as you come down so the munchers don't kill you, it's faster than walking. A couple of frames for a good chance of death probably isn't worth doing.
On Die-Tree I took that midway because if I jumped when I did it meant I didn't lose speed from hitting the switch blocks, which does get you in to the pipe faster. Also, that specific midway didn't result in any lag frames (went back and checked) - I did try my best to optimise them out when they occurred throughout most of the run.
Biohazard - breaking the layer 2 was just to make the jump tighter for the audience, it saved 0 time.
On the boss, the drop block going in did cause mega lag in some setups I tried on that fight, this final version has the block moving a little faster to try to mitigate that. The total lag frames for the three hits were 3 for the "throwing-upwards drop-kick", 8 for the "conveyor belt", 1 for the "get-dunked-on". I tried hard to find set ups to minimise it; you can see a ridiculous amount of lag in my first draft of this level: czcams.com/video/mK3OcbwCLR0/video.html
Kamek Woods - the hard part for the set up to get up to the pipe off Kamek was to be able to jump around the munchers fast enough to change the spawn height. A spin jump isn't enough without changing the spawn height enough.
Stellar - I had no idea you could get P-speed there! That was a definite oversight.
Kamek fight - I could actually hit with the shell earlier but it always seemed to cost frames the less I let the boss get in on screen. I don't have a good explanation for why, but it always seemed to add more fadeout lag frames so I settled for hitting at that point.
Overall, I don't know exactly which strats a human runner could emulate - I think red switch palace jump down is very tight and I don't believe the Frostbite double penguin bounce is possible at all, I had to manipulate the spawning of the second to get it to be at the right height oscillation to make it possible - it was by far the biggest time sink in the whole run. That said, I would *love* to see a human pull it off. I really hope some of the strats used work out if you do try them, I couldn't ask for more than if this somehow contributed in some way to RTA runs. Good luck! :D

@@8squared007 L.O.T.E. is a single-level, TAS-only offering. It isn't playable by humans, at all. Invictus is playable by humans, who occasionally use TAS strats in rta's. If you try to play Invictus, you will quickly realize it is one of the harder options out there.
Beginner kaizo is stuff like Super Ryu World, maybe Super Dram World at this point would be considered "easy" by people who grind relentlessly at kaizo, or again, Quickie World, which is a great intro hack.

    • @Iyerbeth
      @Iyerbeth  Před 3 lety

Thank you so much!! I'm not actually sure how long went in to it overall, it was my first major TAS project so I learned a lot doing it and definitely got better over the project. I do have Discord logs from towards the end of the project where I was spending 10 hours a day on the the weekends on it, and I'd estimated to a friend that from start to polished it was taking 6-8 hours per minute of gameplay so somewhere in the region of 300 hours I think seems about right.
There were some sections (the double yump in green switch, and the penguin jumps at 18:19 in particular) where I'd complained that it was taking 4-5 hours to get a couple of seconds out how I wanted them to look, and when I realised I needed to do the penguin section a second time after I broke it with optimising the level, that was a bit of a nightmare, lol.

It’s just playing with the hit boxes. To make it more fun to watch, a lot of the jumps are intentionally as close as they can physically be without causing a death. Holding jump slows your descent so I’d play back the section removing the jump key frame by frame until it’d cause a death, and then going back to the closest one that worked. Also I use a script when I’m working out the inputs that highlights the hit boxes and gives me information about the game state which helps a lot with that.

My experience with actually creating rom hacks is very limited - I only make TAS and tools to assist me with that for the most part. I had a quick look about anyway and I can't find any specific asm for it and it looks suspiciously like vertical camera snapping so if I had to guess I'd assume it's achieved using camera snapping in lunar magic somehow combined with a large static camera region. But this really is just a guess, I don't know is the honest answer.
Unfortunately though, I just play hacks and use edits to investigate what might be possible on a level - I've never actually made one. Check out smw central if you're interested though, I'm sure you could find help there! :)
