- Aside from having players run a lap with no balls and instructing players to keep two hands on the stick, which helps them identify which hand they shoot (and what hand to do all subsequent drills with), Defense Drill #1 is the first drill we start when introducing new players to the game of lacrosse.
Any new player can be effective in a lacrosse game if they know how to shadow a check and play defense, a concept which is universal to most team sports.
The focus of the drill is to teach players an athletic “balanced” position while playing the game, as well as the basic footwork they will need to stay safe on the floor and otherwise to be successful shadowing a check defensively.
