Ooh, I knew you'd like this one! Epik High is fantastic. Tablo is one of the best lyricists in the industry.
As for whether anything happened, Tablo is really smart and he got his degrees at Stanford in maybe less time than your average person. An online troll accused him of lying about getting those degrees and everyone believed it and they all massively cancelled him. Despite proof and even Stanford backing him up, they refused to believe it and the media, netizens and the public made his and his family's lives a living hell for years. There was a police investigation and everything. Stanford even wrote a whole article about it(you can find it online). It was utter toxic madness.
As for Zico, he's part of K-Pop group, Block B but when his contract was up, he opted to leave the company and start his own, KOZ Entertainment. Haters talked their crap about how that was dumb and now he's done. The line about him swallowing up Melon refers to the 4 nominations and 1 award that he won at the MMAs after that. The line about him giving everyone a chance to unbox something real refers to the album he put out from his own label. It was called Random Box(it was in an actual cardboard box 😄) and it was really good(one of my favourites that year).
I loved Mithra Jin's line about taking the stones that ppl threw and using them to build stairs. He's a poet...literally. He writes poetry.
And I love DJ Tukutz. You should see him dance. 😆
And as you said, CL is fantastic. She does things her way and who cares what others say?
Epik High picked their features carefully for this song. You should check out the rest of the album. In my opinion, it was the best album of the year. 🥰
Yeah this song was definitely one of a kind, and a masterclass at lyricism! I appreciate all of the insight, it's crazy they tried to cancel Tablo over a Stanford Degree, especially after Stanford themselves backed him up!

Thank you for the lovely comment about Zico. As a Bee, is hard to see people saying he is not longer in Block B, is rare someone saying the right thing. And people have no idea how bad the company is with the group; i wish all of them get away from there soon.
I just want to add 2 pieces of information here.
First: When Zico talks about "But not even a year later, I swallowed up all of Melon" is because he got a lot of awards at Melon Music Awards (one of the biggest award shows of whole Asia) and he spent a lot of time at the Melon charts during 2020 with his hit song "Any song"
Second: When Tablo says "I paved the way for everyone that is paving the way" is a reference to BTS. A lot of BTS fans (me included) says that BTS paved the way so korean music could reach western countries more easily. BTS and Epik High are friends nowadays but when BTS was beginning theirs careers RM and Suga said that they were fans of Epik High's music. So he's practically sayin' that he inspired the boys to chase their dream.

Melon is also a streaming service and the most popular one in Korea. It is what most Koreans would use instead of Spotify.
Also since you mentioned Tik Tok challenges with Kep1er, I will point out "Any Song" was a HUGE Tik Tok challenge in Korea when it came out, and is probably the reason why a lot of groups will now try to start their own Tik Tok challenges with their title songs nowadays.
i thought the paving the way for bts was more a reference to them being one of the main artists making rap/hip-hop popular in korea and also them being one of the first bigger korean groups touring in the west i think? but i'm not quite sure about the latter.
Oh yeah, that is certainly a part of it too. When Epik High started, K Hip-Hop wasn't respected at all in Korea and there was pretty much no money in it but they managed to get a following. The show "Show Me The Money" then further broke things open and made K Hip Hop even more mainstream.
Personally, the "paving the way" part isn't only referencing BTS but the succeeding kpop artists in general.

First, glad you enjoyed the song. Some of the stuff I wanted to mention has already been mentioned by others in comments like Epik High paving the way for BTS as Suga and RM both credit Epik High's song "Fly" as for them being wanting to be rappers.
So Tablo and haters is a really interesting story. Really interesting. In 2010 a group of antis started an online forum dedicated to proving that Tablo didn't get a bachelor's and a master's degree in 3 1/2 years. I could go into the details, but read the article called "The Stalking of Korean Hip Hop Superstar Daniel Lee" on Wired magazine. There is also one for Stanford magazine called "The Persecution of Daniel Lee" that was written by the same guy and a little earlier. Seriously, read one of them.
He does also blame that group for his father's death, who had cancer but the stress of everything involved made him get worse.
The guy who is scared of Tablo is DJ Tukutz, but is obviously a stand-in.
Epik High is a legend that has already been talked about as has Zico, but let's talk about CL. She was the rapper and leader of a group called 2NE1. They are pretty much what came before Blackpink. They were a 4 women group on YG Entertainment and paved the way for girl crush groups, which would include not only Blackpink but many others. Giving you an introduction to CL was part of the reason why I picked this song for Epik High (there were a couple other songs I considered). CL released several songs this year. My favorite is "Let it". Obviously, her Killing Verse is worth checking out to see some more great songs from her. On the 2NE1 front, Park Bom, who is another member is a part of Queendom if you check that out.
The meaning of Melon was already mentioned, but "Any Song" came out about a year after he left Block B and started his own company, which again ties into the lyrics.
I will point out that Mithra's part is a reference to The Shining with the ax bit.
Can I point out that even though Tablo shot DJ Tukutz he doesn't actually die right after CL says "Ain't No One Dying Today"?
You certainly got it right this song is an F U to haters, and pretty much what they say doesn't matter. This isn't the only song Epik High has done about haters. The other key one is "Born Haters" which they did in 2012 and this is a sort of sequel to it. Both videos feature that mobile aspect rather than the normal letterbox aspect and tight rooms (they recreated the "Born Haters" room, which was the bathroom featured for a few frames towards the end when Tablo says "Did it my way"). They have said this video is maybe set in a floor below it (or maybe in the afterlife, hence the entire video being a loop since it ends right before when it begins).
There are a lot of songs I could suggest to you from Epik High. "Born Hater" as mentioned before. "Lost One" was another one I was considering because it really gives you Tablo's view of some things (or at least his view when he wrote it). "Lost One" was also recently voted by Epik High as their worst song (mostly in a joking manner but the main reasons were it is harder to sing live and it is a Tablo solo song so the other two could mess with him by picking his solo songs). "Rain Song" and "Face Id" were two great ones also from 2021 (thanks to COVID they had enough time to write that they put out two full albums last year). Lovedrunk is a great ballad. Spoiler I think you like the MV for at least, but I won't spoil the reason.
Another big comment from me. Shouldn't be surprised since this song was my idea. Also huge thanks for being so excited about my suggestion that you just jumped in and got in posted so fast. I was expecting to be waiting for days.

Zico makes me crazy because his lyrics are SO good. He is known for his insane lyrics, but at times they can be kinda inconvenient for non-native speakers because he uses SO many specific cultural metaphors & tongue twisters that sometimes the meaning of the phrase gets lost in translation and doesn’t make complete sense to English speakers.
I'm always astounded at how much meaning you can pull from lyrics, no matter the genre. My first time hearing this (though like you I'm vaguely familiar with CL) and hope you'll do more. It's piqued my interest =)

You should definitely check out zico. As a Korean myself I can tell you that zico is one of the most famous and successful rapper/producer/idol. He is the leader of the idol group blockb. (and he still is despite what some people might say) He has many great songs and is a brilliant rapper. Actually, he is regarded as the best rapper among all the kpop idol groups, morover one of the best in the whole k hiphop industry. Although zico and blockb are not popular enough around other countries, in korea they are very famous and still popular. You should really try some of zico's and blockb's songs. I'm sure you'll like them!

I can take credit for it. Not only is it a great song (I listened to it so many times last year), but since I knew he likes BTS and Blackpink, it would be great due to Epik High and CL's relation to those groups.

what a great reaction to an amazing song :) it must be really difficult to analyze the lyrics and video content at the same time, but you're a master at it! i know it's impossible to mention everything fans might want to hear, but i appreciate how thorough you are while still staying genuine to yourself & your own reactions.
It's definitely something that takes some time to adjust too, but I'm getting the hang of it, I just wish I learn to get my point across in a shorter time, but I guess it all depends on those lyrics and when it comes to hop hop, there's definitely a lot to process but it was fun! Epik High stan here for a long time now. So happy to see you do this breakdown. I really hope you look into more Epik High and go beyond the usual with them. They have so many good songs, Tablo is genius, fantastic lyrics and meanings. Mithra's flow kills me. Tukutz is amazing. and then for this track, CL, Zico, all legends.

I'm late to this one but I'm so glad you reacted to this. Epik High were actually what made me fall in love with the Korean language. Their album Remapping The Human Soul is a masterpiece.
