Michael is the most talented Penn!
Haven't heard this song in forever! Loved it when it came out.
You must not shop at Food Lion. Lol.
I've always loved this song since I was a teenager back in 1989 but I never really paid much attention to what it was about. I've heard it a thousand times and I'm impressed that this young person was able to listen once and get more from the song than I ever have. I admire her insightful approach to music and the way she didn't just dismiss it as "old music" like a lot of young people do today.
March is ONE of the best albums EVER! Still play it, it never gets old!
Madonna's ex brother in law. Micheal is married to the great Amie Mann, an artist I strongly recommend.
David Levin VOICES CARRY is a great song
Heathcliff is a reference to the tragic romance of Wuthering Heights. I love this song so hard.
Speaking of "Wuthering Heights" you should REALLY give a listen to the 1978 song of the same name by British music legend Kate Bush!!!!!
I adore this song, but Heathcliff was such a cruel, evil dude. I have never found him romantic. He and Catherine were the worst toxic couple. I mean, I get why Wuthering Heights is a tragic, gothic romance, but yikes he is bad news. Kinda like Rochester in Jane Eyre. I did not find him a romantic hero at all!
@@MegCazalet I get why people feel this way. I guess my take is I like lit figures like Rochester and Heathcliff because its realistic yet done in a hyperrealistic way. There are toxic relationships everywhere and people make it work. I don't advocate it but its a thing. Psychologically speaking no one does anything or stays in a relationship unless they are getting some sort of mental payoff. It may not be healthy mental payoff but its something they have been hardwired to crave wether through dysfunction or just natural preference. I love the way the gothic genre looks at problematic people and situations and says hey, this is human, this is life and there is a beauty in everything, even a twisted kind of beauty. Sorry for the ramble but I actually study this stuff and its fascinating.
@@Awall79 Now I’m super curious what you think of Mr. Darcy. At least, first marriage proposal Darcy.
I’m a huge British Lit fan, btw. This could turn into a fun and fascinating conversation!
Cannot believe you happened upon this track! I remember when this was brand new! Thanks again!
I LOVE this song India !!
Brother of actor Sean Penn !!
For real!?? I didnt know that!!!
Also actor Chris Penn...RIP
Voices Carry by Til Tuesday! His wife Aimee Mann
This song I remember seemed a lot different from the typical 80's sound that was everywhere. I loved it right away (I was always retro), but I felt like it was hurt because people weren't ready for such a simple sound. Where are all the synths and echo drums? Same thing happened when Lenny Kravitz debut album dropped and everyone wondered who this hippy person was with his 60's and 70's sounds. Perfect for me though.
I have heard it called a perfect 90s alternative rock song that was ahead of its time.
@@MegCazalet This. 👍
Great reaction, ,I remember buying the cassette tape of this song when I was in high school, lol
An unbelievable artist! Unfortunately overlooked. March is an album worth a listen.
I believe you meant to say March, but it is indeed a lovely LP.
@@MRoyClark thanks for the heads up! 😁
The song is about a man who was looking for love with a woman who only wanted a f*ck-buddy. "Someone to dance with" isn't about dancing. He was looking to be her knight in shining armor like Romeo or Heathcliff (from "Wuthering Heights"), but that's just not what she was looking for. Michael Penn didn't have any other hits but his first few albums were lovely. His music belongs to the same school of Folk-Pop and College Rock that brought us acts like Tracey Chapman and Suzanne Vega. [[You should also check out a couple of Suzanne Vega's songs, but definitely her hit (US#3, 1987), "Luka". ]]
I'm sure others have mentioned it, but he's the brother of actors Sean Penn and Chris Penn (R.I.P.) and he is married to celebrated singer/songwriter Aimee Mann. She has had a brilliant and long career, but you must react to her biggest Pop moment (US#8, 1985), "Voices Carry" by her Post-New Wave act, 'Til Tuesday.
Thank you India. Great reaction. You're right. He's in the friend zone. He never had a chance. She shut him down at the beginning. He pleads his case by asking what if he was two famous literary lovers; Romeo, or Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights. Love it!
OMG loved this song!
Literally the best song ever. I also like the part where you can see him say "s**t" when he drops the guitar pick.
I almost scrolled on past!!! Your hair is amazing!!!
This is possibly my all time favourite song. Love it. Great reaction...as always.
Oh, I love Michael Penn, especially this song. 💜
Michael Penn is actor Sean Penn’s brother.
Oh snap, I never knew that, and I was listening to this in 1990.
I love Michael Penn!!! He has many wonderful songs!! Aimee Mann is awesome as well. 🖤♥️
Michael Penn’s wife, Aimee Mann is an incredible songwriter and performer. Her song “Save Me” is lovely.
Saw her in concert.
His only hit but he married Aimee Mann in 1997 and they are still married so he got his happy ending. Aimee is a AMAZING talent.
One of my childhood faves. Thank you!!
Hey all….I was the blonde in the video. Such great artists to work with. All just fabulous people.
Micheal Penn was a real wordsmith. Really I was in awe of his lyrical style, such subtlety and turn of phrase especially in his first two records. They’re definitely worth a listen or three, they aged well and grow on you. Plus they have great atmosphere- a real mood roller coaster per each record. I’m glad you chose this little sleeper hit, it’s a good one, unique choice!
“She said that she always pegged me as gay
But she only plays for keeps when she plays
Well isn’t that something now
You’re pulling my heart strings
But what you gonna do when you
Slowly fade
I feel invincible
She went invisible
Don't give me away
I go invisible
From another song on this album, “Invisible”.
Worth reading his lyrics, they are so great
Well, I stumbled across this looking for the original video after my husband of 13 years didn't understand my comment, "I still can't believe my ex beat out Lenny Kravitz for a Grammy." It was actually a MTV Video award but this was ages ago and I'm old. I'll leave out the awkward conversation that I guess we never had before, but I was with Patrick Warren at the time this song blew up. While Michael was the name the songs were collaborated on together. He's the man you see playing the Chamberlin in the background. That's what gives this song it's unbelievably unique sound. Michael and Patrick both went on to do movie scores such as Magnolia and Boogie Nights with Patrick winning an Emmy for his music for True Detective. Now! Here's what I'm really here to tell you about. The song is really about an arsonist who after not getting the girls attention sets fires in hopes of winning the girl. The lyrics were eventually toned down, as not to influence others, but you can tell by the words if you think them through closer as to their intent. India, you rock!
Indescriptible la emoción que corre por mi cuerpo. Cuando escucho esta canción... Mi reacción ❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍😍😍😍hace que un dia que esté triste y deprimida se convierta en un dia alegre y Feliz!!!!
I’ve been subscribed to your channel for months now and I’m just seeing that you reacted to this. Wow! One of my favorite songs from that time. I still like to listen to it when I walk on the elliptical machine. It has a great beat.
This song was released when I was a senior in high school. Love it!
Love the hair......sexiest hairstyle is the Fro....oooh laaaaa laaaaa woman
I always liked this. It was a very good album. I heard a really good cover band do this song, one night, back when it first came out,and bought it that week. I would say the next day,but I don't remember for sure, lol. Good days
An 80s classic. I loved this song when I was a kid
Actor Sean Penn is his brother. He's a composer for sound tracks on movies and TV shows (like the hit HBO "GIRLS")
Love this song!
March is one of the greatest albums of all times ❤️ bought it as a vinyl in 1989 and played it until it was absolutely bent and couldnt be played anynlonger 😂
Wow, totally forgot about this song...
Great reaction. Love this song!
Hey doll. Came across your page cos this is one of my favorite songs. Loved your analysis! Followed. Keep it up. You nailed it! ❤
I may be 7 months late for a response but let me say first that I love this song and video. And I agree with your interpretation. But I must say that watching you jam to this fab song made my day! I envisioned a great virtual party! Rock on! I'm subscribing! Stay beautiful!
Love his voice good song writing reminds me of Finn brothers from Split Enz
My hubs and I kept missing each other for years. Not single at the same time but kept having these weird rom com thrown together moments over the years. We both loved this song and when we did finally get together said we always thought of the other while apart thinking of the other. 😂
It's such a great song.
Love Michael Penn!
Love this song I was a freshman in High school
Great song. Loved when it was the final credits song for the 2000 movie "Loser".
This song came out when I was 10. It was the first Adult Alternative Pop song that I found on my own, and not through the radio, high school-aged sister, or parents. Everybody has that song that unlocked their passion for exploring new music and artists. A song that they claim as theirs..."Hey! That's my song! Turn it up!" "No Myth" by Michael Penn was that song for me.
My favourite song of all time ❤
great reaction video
Your hair It's awsome!!
India, your hair is so great
Can you preview a song called KEY LARGO by BERTIE HIGGINS? Its very romantic.
You look fantastic! Love the fro! Stay away from the cornrows!
India you are so great! Keep doing what you do - you are a shinning star :-) PS - I'm a songwriter and I just adore Michael Penn's song writing -he's the real deal for sure. But yeah... he's just looking for somebody to dance with. And drum roll please... he found/married Aimee Mann!
You nailed this one 😊
They play this song at CVS.
Hahaha, they play a lot of good songs at CVS, for those of us that like the singer-songwriter genre.
@@appletree6898 Heck yes!
Another one of my favourites. Have you heard 'Don't pay the ferryman' by Chris de Burgh?
Great, underrated artist (like his wife, Aimee Mann).
Recommend Long Way Down, which may be the saddest breakup song I’ve ever heard.
Such an under rated artist, great song about his brothers relationship with Madonna
When someone friend zones me ,I friend zone them in return.
It's really a shame that Michael Penn didn't keep putting out albums. His last studio album was released in 2005. If you want a good sample of his work, check out "Palms and Runes, Tarot and Tea: A Michael Penn Collection".
I've always loved this song, but…yeah, I think he just didn't get that she was just the wrong person for him. On a personal level, though, he did finally find his gal, and she's amazingly talented and worth checking out! His wife is Aimee Mann, who was a rock bassist in the 80s for 'Til Tuesday that wrote a memorable song "Voices Carry" about a woman with an abusive partner. The music video was so memorable that the guy who played the abusive partner would get berated on the street even while he was dying of AIDS. :( Her best known song is Save Me from the movie Magnolia, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award and a Grammy. She's also won two Grammys.
Please react to some Alison Moyet -- "Changeling" or "When I Was Your Girl", perhaps.
Michael Penn like his wife Aimee Mann are 'great'!👍🥰💯‼
Now here's one I've not come across before... gonna have to check this guy out. Reminiscent of Crowded House?
Yes, this definitely sounds similar to Crowded House's early hits. The 80s were all about beefing up Folksy Jangly stuff with giant drums. R.E.M., The Church, The Bangles...
At the start, I had to check and see if my player was not at 1.25 speed.
Is it weird that I think he sounds like Matthew Sweet?
I think so, too.
Maybe that’s why I like them both so much!
He's ok now. He's married to Aimee Mann!
Penn did a video for his song "Try" that was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who made BOOGIE NIGHTS, INHERENT VICE, and is married to Maya Rudolph. Besides a great song, it's staged to look like a single take. Might be worth checking out: czcams.com/video/Hox7UOaQffI/video.html
LOL!!!!! I love your comments!!!
Sounds like Mr John Lennon😎March good album
India, you may want to listen to Laid by James.
Just a guess but I think he's hinting at his ex-sister in law Madonna. "maybe she's looking for someone to dance with" makes me think of a reference to "into the groove". Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.
Listrn to Micheal Penn "Long Way Down"
Always liked this song but prefer ‘this and that’ from him
This song is more alternative! 🙄
It's a lot easier to comment on the lyrics when you have a lyric sheet to reference. Just saying.
Girl I love your videos, especially the old tracks, but you missed the mark on this one! It's simply a song about a guy that wants a girl. Offering himself as he is.
Song sucks…….not even a one hit wonder. At least his wife had a bigger hit.
Too many inane interruptions. I can't take it any more. I have to unsubscribe from this chatter. Best wishes, though.
I had never heard of this dude before... it could have stayed that way honestly... Heh. Ugh.
Love this song!
