Why Is This Airport in the Middle of the Ocean?

  • This airport is placed literally in the middle of the bay. Located right outside of Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, it plays a big role in transporting passengers and cargo to the area. Each year more than 20 million passengers use the airport, and it transports nearly 1 million tons of cargo. This fact makes it the third busiest airport in Japan, and one of the busiest in entire Asia. But with the price tag of 20 billion dollars, this project is highly controversial. Even by the most optimistic estimates, it was predicted that the airport would sink 5.7 meters. But only after five years of its existence, it sank 8.2 meters, nearly fifty percent more than the estimate. Despite that, Japan kept pumping money into the airport, making it the most expensive civil project at the time it was built.
There are so many questions surrounding this airport. Why didn't they build it on land? Did they know that the airport would sink? And if so, why did they keep building it? Why is this project so expensive? And what's the future of this airport? This is a deep dive into the Kansai International Airport. In this video, I'll answer all of these questions, and explain how this airport was built.
