Rest in Peace Liam. Finally he's back with Tommy and his brothers together again in heaven. They must be having some craic up there! I hope my grandfathers enjoy the sessions!
As you say, there are many very good versions of this song - this one, Liam Clancy, Cara Dillon to name three, but my current favourite is by Loreena McKennitt czcams.com/video/tlzn_o5BEdc/video.html&ab_channel=92mystique
My grandfather requested I play this, with my cousin singing at his funeral. Was a beautiful way to send him off, and I routinely return for a listen. Rest in peace papa Jack; goodnight and joy be with you all.
Whenever we get together and the singing happens as it often does this is my way to close out the session. I hope to hear it from Heaven someday when I'm looking down at my waking.
This was sung and played at my mother's burial and it was so beautiful and fitting. So I thank you, Clancy Brothers and Tommy Maken for introducing my parents to you at a concert. Our entire family and relatives were gifted by your bringing this song to America,
I think this must be many peoples favorite Clancy Brothers song . . . it is a perfect song . . . It always brought a tear to my eye . . . now more than ever
There are no words powerful enough for these two great men. Those guys up there are the greatest that ever did it. There will NEVER be anything better. Makem and Liam just belted it out and those voices will carry on this Earth forever. They find dimentions of ourselves for us we'd never find without them. Or atleat we might never see it so clearly. Sometimes I hate them for it. Then I go back to pretending that men such as myself never cry. But if that were true I guess we'd never laugh either.
Of all the money that ere I had, I spent it in good company. And of all the harm that ere I've done, alas was done to none but me. And all I've done for want of wit, to memory now I cannot recall. So fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.Of all the comrades that ere I had, they're sorry for my going away, And of all the sweethearts that ere I had , they wish me one more day to stay, But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise while you should not, I will gently rise and I'll softly call, "Goodnight and joy be with you all!"Oh, if I had money enough to spend and leisure time to sit awhile There is a fair maid in this town that sorely has my heart beguiled Her rosey cheeks and ruby lips, she alone has my heart in thrall. So fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.
This traditional Celtic songs (with lyrics that first appeared in Scotland and played to the music of a traditional Celtic fiddle tune originating who knows where) was re-popularized by the Clancy Brothers about sixty years ago and since then has of course been a standard everywhere. But the Clancy Brothers version with Liam Clancy singing the lead still has never been topped. Liam had the best tenor type voice for a folk singer I ever heard (Luke Kelly was the closest to him) and the version the Clancy Brothers did with Liam singing the lead was perfect. He always stayed true to that version whenever he performed it subsequently.
Thanx! Heard there's to be a Clancy Bros. festival there with new Clancy blood as well as others performing. I guess it's an anual thing so I hope there's never a need for you to miss it. I had the pleasure of seeing T. Makem perform with his son Rory in Philadelphia, 2006- the year before he passed. Great venue. I'd been hearing that man's voice sing Butcher Boy since before I was born so this was some experience. But such strength couldn't be much less moving had I never heard of him. Cheers!
Just got my first tin whistle and can't wait to learn this song! This and Jug of Punch are two of my all-time favorites! Thank so very much for posting. Mahalo nui loa from Kaua'i!
Wow!! Tommy Makem was such an incredible artist . . . especially with the Clancy Brothers! I have a third cousin who was in the New Lost City Ramblers . . . Cohen was his name . . . excellent musician . . . but I never met him . . . small world eh?
thanks tom pat mellett i fell in love with the clancy brothers music as i fellmin love with her back in 1964 chicago. to twist a wii rogers quote ; ' i never heard a clancy brothers song i didn,t like' JOHN R./IOWA
+VMA225 Yes, a guitar a tin whistle and a great song, sung brilliantly by Liam and also Tommy. I will listen again; thank you Liam and Tommy, may ye both have great rest in heaven; ye left us some great music down here.
I love this song. I have a video of Liam singing this at his brother's funeral and now Liam is no more. Rest in peace Liam. Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing."
I seen them at their best Liverpool Empire with Man and Dad and my Sister in 60 s my Mam was fro m Tipperary they were the best ever and if you don't like them that's up to you but they truly were great God bless and thanks for the memories x
We will all meet again some grand day in Fiddler's Green. Fret not my Brothers and Sisters The good Lord will hold us all in the hollow of his hand and we will sing and dance once again. Slán Abhaile.
Makem and Clancy were a great duo. their material was different from The Clancy's and Tommy Makem. does anyone have a clip from their 1983 television show' Makem and Clancy live' at the national concert hall featuring Tommy Makem singing slieve galleon braes.? he sang a excellent version of it. I don't know if he ever made a studio recording of it. this concert was recorded by r.t.e' and later released on album and cassette.
They could have been big here in England but sadly we'd hardly heard of them, probably because they were based mainly in America and Ireland. By contrast, Val Doonican, The Dubliners, the Chieftains, the Fureys and Michael Flatley were all very big here.
supernikki12100 Well here in Ireland we call it the States too but also we call it America. We have no problem distinguishing it from Canada. We have no second name for Canada, we just call Canada by its name. Maybe opening a can of worms here about how my country Ireland is named?
+Tungsten Kid The Clancys were great, but they might have pitched their music a little too exactly at the American market. More of the twinkly-eyed Irish sentiment about them, than the likes of the Dubliners or the Fureys, who had a working class hardness about them that probably frightened off the misty-eyed Yanks. Fair play to Britain to have the Dubliners topping their charts a few times. They obviously 'got it'!
Figserello- yes, even when IRA bombs were going off in England I never heard any of my countrymen speak a word against the ordinary great Irish people. Even when one went off in my home town of Leicester in 1990 and rattled our windows and woke up our cat, nobody batted an eye, our cat went back to sleep, I carried on playing my computer game and my mother switched on the telly to watch a quiz show..;)
R.I.P. Officer Liam Callahan, Port Authority Police. Hero of 9/11/01.Eternal rest grant unto Him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon Him.

Rest in Peace Liam.
Finally he's back with Tommy and his brothers together again in heaven. They must be having some craic up there! I hope my grandfathers enjoy the sessions!

A voice that always brings me back to my childhood. Here's to you...
I have a picture of the Late Tommy Makem holding me as a baby. I literally grew up on these guys. Proud as can be, too.
Thank you for your beautiful music your presence will live on. May God be with you and safe home.

I never heard them live, only on records. They took america by storm sometime in the 60's. What a time. I miss it.
I'm so blessed that I got to see them perform many times. Such wonderful musicians and great souls.
Well sung that man (and the whistle man) very easy on the ears and heart. Cheers fae the Highlands.
You mean Tommy Makem

Surely someone has the original tape or broadcast recording of that show and has turned it into a dvd to sell right? Anyone?
My Mother was Tommy's Mothers cousin. So I suppose that make me a really distant cousin. This was in Keady County Armagh.
They did release a studio recording of the song as a 45. I myself have never heard that recording, but I bet somebody has it.
@JohnJohn27030 too true he was the best
me too.

I know I am making a big deal of this, but the English always say America, me being a Canadian it is called the States.
