      @thebonesaw..4634 Před 4 lety +20

      No... none of this happened. This was a ruse to promote a movie... a heist movie. The fact that the diamonds were NOT insured is very, very telling. See, I'm fairly confident that the diamonds were no longer on the car at the beginning of the race because this is all WAY too coincidental. Something appears to get stolen that is - in and of itself - a promotion for a heist movie with a plot where things get "cleverly" stolen? Come on! And then there's the lack of insurance, which is a very big deal because, if they had insured the diamonds and this was nothing more than a publicity stunt, where you are pretending they've "gone missing" but you then collect from an insurance company because of your "loss"... you've just committed fraud, and you're going to go to jail. Insurance companies are notorious for investigating these types of things and, more often than not, they're the ones who break major cases involving huge insurance payouts when even the police couldn't figure out what was going on. So, you can't involve an insurance company if this a publicity stunt. There was no repayment for the diamonds to the billionaire. Oh, they said they did... but it never happened; it was all part of the stunt.

  • @scottt3269
    @scottt3269 Před 4 lety +145

    I definitely understand the promotion aspect, and I think that's at the heart of this controversy. I think it was the plan all along to say that the diamond "went missing" - no matter what transpired in the race. To give off the impression that an elaborate heist had taken place. Perfect promotion for the movie. The only catch is...nobody seemed to care because..ya know..Monaco.

    • @alexburke1899
      @alexburke1899 Před 4 lety +13

      Yeah a gorilla marketing campaign makes sense. Coincides well with a heist movie plot and the cost of the diamonds lost might have paid for itself in publicity. I don’t know how much attention it got at the time but I don’t think 600k is that much in terms of movie advertising and maybe they thought losing the diamonds would get a lot of attention. We’re still talking about it so in one way it worked lol.

    Damn, I'd forgotten about this! Thank you for this, I remember it being the most bizarre stunt ever. It was incredibly weird. 🤷
    I always thought that the "diamonds" on the cars were faked, the real ones being swapped before the race. And why no insurance? No insurance investigation after the fact (I'm not involving the drivers in any shenanigans. Whereas logic says it's not impossible, I personally find it highly unlikely that they were paid to lose them. Webber, for example, would have told them to p!ss off, and when they got there, to p!ss off again lol). With them "disappearing" (maybe a false marshall or two?), the police would have nothing to go on. Jag would have paid up to make the embarrassment go away asap. Only my hypothesis, btw, I'm factually clueless as to what exactly happened, so I've gone my usual cynical route 😉
    Never forgave Ford for shafting Jaguar, btw. They wrecked Justin Wilson's F1 career. He was such a smooth driver, he'd have been a wonderful long-term addition to the driver pack, and maybe he'd still be around. ☹️

It's unlikely that a front wing failure would happen so early in the race, so I am guessing that he might have collided with one of the Jordans at Mirabeau. IF the diamond got lost at Mirabeau or at the exit it would make sense that it would get lost, because it would have ended up on the racing line, or right next to it. It's easy to forget how good Larry Bird actually was and say he wouldn't score today which is absurd. Or that Messi is no where near the talent as Pele for xyz. but in 20 years, we'll lift up Messi and discount whoever the newest star is. Formula 1 for me just goes in cycle. i've noticed the same trend you mention because I am an "outsider" and I've never understood it either. the car is quick but Hamilton is not only winning, just in 2019 alone he's SCORED in every race too. that's not easy.

    How did it pass tech inspection? Surely there would be safety objections to the chance of a large piece of shiny rock being flung off the car at high speed and injuring a marshal/driver/fan in the worst case or at best gouging a tyre

      that's actually a really good point. fake diamond or not haha

    Honestly, the diamond going missing was irrelevant to The PR stunt. The fact that diamonds were being added to a Formula 1 car already generated millions of dollars in hype for oceans 12, and the diamond going missing was just the cherry on top. The company that provided the diamonds was relatively unknown in the gemstone space before the incident, but afterwards? We're still talking about steinrich and how it let one of its diamonds be mounted on a formula 1 car. All in all, everybody won. Jaguar got a massive cash infusion, oceans 12 got a humongous publicity boost, steinrich diamonds became well-known after the incident, we all had a fun story to tell, and some lucky sod made off with a $250,000 diamond!

    Well surely some heads at Ford and steinmetz knew each other well. I bet they did ensure the Diamonds, and gambled on a nice payout if something did happen. Which as you point out was very very likely in their case!

      I can technically only speculate in these videos due to their reach and libel, but I’m comfortable speculating here that it wasn’t just cut and dry fake diamonds haha I think you understand the nuance of what I’m able to say but many are confused why I did this story then I started realize people don’t get I can’t just Willy Nilly say anything I want haha I’ve seen Journalists and content creators with smaller channels get sued for less

    Thing is the Car is litterally Worth tens of Millions, the fact that the diamonds got lost in the Crash did not make it all that much more expensive

    How is nobody mentioning the fact that an engine is $10.5 million? I know things in racing are expensive, but good grief! Are we talking R&D to make one is $10 mil and each additional one is then much cheaper to produce, or $10 mil a pop?

    • @CYMotorsport
      @CYMotorsport  Před 4 lety +1

      Andrew Moseley more the engine development divided by the allotted number of engines over a year. But additionally, that 10.5 figure is the limit on net purchase power towards engine for the full year each team is limited to. At a simple math level, if you wanted to look at individual engine costs, you’d take 10.5 million divided by the number of engines allocated that season. That’s what it cost you for instance if you for some reason wanted an F1 engine in your flat haha There’s a few figures on engine cost but both ways I felt comfortable with it. The number is SIGNIFICANTLY higher for a top engine. The Merc hybrid tech that rolled out in 2014 took four years and hundreds of millions to develop.

    Diamonds are essentially worthless especially to a diamond miner

      Adams Angels very true haha which is why it never seemed that crazy that a couple Diamonds off the books in exchange for putting Steinmetz on the the side of a Formula 1 car (I noticed no one has caught that yet) isn’t too bad . Just speculating out loud not accusing haha

    Interesting you picked the Red Bull team for movie tie-in comparison since the Red Bull team rose from the ashes of Jaguar.
