    Per's work with the prog rock band Kaipa is also great. If you enjoy boundlessly unironic cheeseball prog of the put-flowers-in-your-beard-and-dance-in-the-meadow variety, I can't recommend them highly enough. Despite being completely notes-per-second obsessed when I started playing bass and guitar in my teens, these days, guitar playing like Per's impresses me a great deal more than straight ahead light speed shredding. Per's ascended to another plane of guitar existence that takes a great deal more than a metronome to reach.

    Per is surely one of the finest, most lyrical, most 'vocalist-like' of the modern guitar improvisers. Almost every single example of him playing is a wonderful example of playing through changes in a way that is economic in the sense of his choice of notes. There's also an abundance of tiny inflections in his playing that are the technical elements that bring out the soul and the 'feel' of it all. It's an incredible package.

    There's a scene in the middle of the movie Krull where our heroes have to trek tonthe bad guy castle. So they walk. And they walk. And then they walk some more. All this with a score that is less than stellar. I'm not saying don't watch Krull but, when you do, mute the TV and play this during that scene. Now Krull is epic all the way through!

    Nice guitar playing, but that RipX software is amazing! Strange to say, but I have to remember to watch more of the ads on CZcams music videos because they also are very instructive. You did a great job of showing what that software can do. Back in the '70s and '80s, I used to transcribe speedy guitar solos from vinyl albums by recording to reel-to-reel tape and slowing it to half speed. I had to write everything out by hand. That's so primitive by today's standards.

    Although Holdsworth appreciated many guitar players, notably once commented that he liked Gambale's note choices. he rejected the stale, physical contraints of historical guitar and routinely listed keyboard and horn players as those who influenced him most. His humorous concept of his own playing was simply, "juggling notes."

    regarding RipX (sorry I know nothing about this topic so maybe stupid question) does this (or other tool) allow conversion of guitar pitches (i.e. 8:55) into tabs automatically? I see the keyboard over to the left ... wouldn't it be cool if you told it how many strings / what tuning and it gave you suggested fingerings? You could shift positions (lower strings higher on fretboard) to generate the tabs extremely quickly

    • @LeviClay
      @LeviClay  Před rokem +1

      no - you wouldn't want it to do that because it wouldn't be accurate. While the software is picking up pitch information, it picks up EVERYTHING, harmonic overtones, background noise, resonance etc. So you need to know what then instrument is and what isn't, but when you get to turning it into tab, there's too much experience required. Knowing where something is played.

    I understand that these click bait titles are most likely helpful for CZcamsrs, but good lord, they do such a disservice to the players you feature. The titles set the expectations so high for those of us that have heard hundreds of guitarists that play like this. Then it’s a disservice to the viewers who have to fight to lower our expectations and just enjoy someone for what they do.

    • @LeviClay
      @LeviClay  Před rokem

      Which one of us has the experience in this area? I'll tell you what does the artist a disservice. Titling the video they way you would and it getting 500 views. • @Charles2112pp
      @Charles2112pp Před rokem

      @@LeviClay here’s the experience I have: I’ve only played in small bands that have been lucky to sell 1,000 albums and have had the opportunity to open a few show with audiences of between 1,000 and 5,000 people where the bands I was in were not what the audience was expecting and we sold zero albums except a couple rare occasions of selling 2 or 3 albums. In other instances I have played shows to 30 or 40 people where we were what they were expecting, basing expectations on the type of bands billed, and we sold 10-20 albums to that small crowd. So the number of people reached doesn’t exactly mean you automatically win over more people. You know, decades ago Pearl Jam took Zeke on tour with them and they were not at all the type of band Pearl Jam fans would be expecting and Zeke still plays the small shows they always have. The point I’m trying to make here is that I don’t have to be a CZcamsr to understand that hyping things up and getting butts in seats or more viewers or more clicks can seem like a great thing in the moment, but often the long term payoff isn’t great.
