      Every game store I've ever been to take the discs out of the cases when they put them on the display and only put them back in after you've already paid for the games. This was already standard practice when I was a kid in the early 2000's. I mean, I understand why they do it, but it doesn't exactly inspire customer trust. Charity shops tend to leave the discs in the cases, but it's obviously harder to find the game you want if you're looking for a specific game and they don't test the games before accepting them like game stores do.

  • @pixieriot7578
    @pixieriot7578 Před 6 lety +153

    Just want to clear something up as I've worked for the company...
    So a few things I've seen in the comments are a bit buggy.
    1: Firstly, yes the covers are reprints as a lot of cases get lost in store, the games are 100% real but we print out media covers and put them in boxes so that we can sell the disc. For a serious collector I understand how that is a pain but I'd recommend fully checking over any product you are to buy before doing so. Without media covers a lot of our stock would be unsellable as boxes get lost incredibly easily (and are, surprisingly, stolen very often even though they're all empty).
    2: Scratched/broken discs and DVDs happen a lot, yes. Often new starters don't know what to look for when it comes to what's okay to buy in and what isn't or something is accidentally missed whilst being bought in. That's why we offer a 2 year warrantee so that if you do happen to purchase a broken disc, we clean it for you, replace it or you can have a refund to store credit (which is our policy - 2 day return for voucher as second hand trading laws are very different to first hand).
    3: Yes, fakes do come up, again when someone isn't sure on what they're looking for (lack of training, new starter etc) but if a fake is found we will offer a full cash/card refund if a genuine copy isn't available to exchange with as it's our error and we legally shouldn't be selling anything fake.
    4: I see a lot of people saying to go to Game instead - I have also worked for Game in the past and though theirs are more official than CeX's, if a box is unavailable to match a disc they will make up a box using media covers. CeX print their media covers themselves - it's cheaper and more efficient for us (hence why the logo is on the back and why I suggest you check in the future - we sometimes receive official overstock media covers but it's a rare occurrence) whereas Game are sent in their official media covers in weekly packages (very rarely their own logo is on the back if it's had to be self printed - depending on the store and budget they also print their own media covers so don't think of Game as a 100% safe zone).
    And finally, 5: Yes, CeX will charge £15 on something you'll barely get £10 for to make a profit. Believe it or not, not a lot of money actually comes into the stores when it comes to buys. Unfortunately the products need to be retailed at a much higher price than what we buy them for otherwise the store won't manage. We tend to go about 20-50% depending on the value of the item (a rough estimate regarding the price differences between items I've bought in which I've then printed labels for and put out for sale). It's also probably worthy mentioning that all Corporate CeX stores receive their prices from a pricing team within the company who look into items and calculate how much each item buys/sells for. Unfortunately we don't decide the prices in store, that is all overrun by a completely different sector of the company.
    At the end of the day CeX is a business and a businesses goal is to make money. If you don't wish to shop there then fair enough although it's wise to be clear on how the company actually functions and things to look out for before dissing them completely.

To be fair the don't say this on the front but inside to cover there is a CEX red stamp to say this is a reproduction sleeve from CEX. If you had checked this when you got it then you could of taken it to any CEX store and got a refund. • @darksidegaming754
    @darksidegaming754 Před 5 lety +5

    As a dedicated employee of CeX myself I find this offending we have certain procedures that we have to follow when it comes to damaged stock. We take in dvds, blurays and games on a daily basis that have cracked cases which in some cases results in damage to the sleeves. When faced with this issue we send said price of software to our media centre where they reprint the cover with our logo on the inside. We are completely within our rights and in all cases have received permission to reprint these sleeves. If for arguments sake we made an exact copy of the sleeve whereby you could see no difference we could be liable to copyright infringement. Also you should notice when it comes to retro software like this there are three grades... Mint, Boxed and unboxed if the game is mint it must come with all original inserts i.e. instruction manuals, maps etc. And the case itself must be in immaculate condition with no wear and tear of any kind boxed just needs to be working and in its box and unboxed well that's pretty self explanatory. Be sure to check which of the three grades you are buying before you complain about the condition. Also if you buy online and an item is unwanted and has no manufacturing issues you have 14 days to return it to your local store. If you buy from in store you have 48 hours to return an unwanted item both of these time periods give you plenty of time to inspect your item and return it if unhappy so if you were that bothered you would have done so this to me just seems like an excuse to moan and make us seem like the villains when you could in fact be using this time to work with us to achieve maximum customer satisfaction. But all of this is covered in the terms and conditions so if you can't be bothered to read them which obviously you haven't then please stop wining and keep it to yourself don't expect others to help you if you're not willing to help yourself!

      I have to agree with sl1ck. If he’s a serious game collector, he wouldn’t be going to CEX, he would be going to a collectors fair or specialist outlet that deals with games.
      CEX and other stores have a terms and conditions of sale available to read in the store. It states that some case art are reproductions. The ones that have a repro cover have the logo printed on the inside of it. It is the buyers responsibility to look for that massive clue as to whether it’s a genuine insert or not.
      As for the price, if the going rate for a mint condition original is, say £60 and the local chain second hand store is selling them at £60, then it seems common sense that it’s probably over priced and therefore careful attention should be paid to the item before parting with the cash. This guy clearly shows that the case has the CEX logo inside. A serious collector would have taken the sleeve right out of the case to check its authenticity before paying.
      There’s 2 consumer rights EVERY customer has.
      1. The right to thoroughly inspect the merchandise before purchase.
      2. The right to walk away.
      If he looked at other cases, there may have been genuine sleeves in most of them. It his own fault for not examining the goods properly.

I will not buy from CEX online if I am looking for games to add to my permanent collection BUT you can return an online order for full refund at your local store within 14 days, and the refunds come in pretty quick. He's complaining from a collectors view not just a gamers. A collector receiving an inauthentic item is a problem. It's second hand sure but it's a company doing it, not a person. Making it illegal under copyright law (according to him. i can not confirm) and immoral. Had to restate this point seeing as half the complainers here didn't even watch the full video. He doesn't just want a game. He wants an authentic collectors item and fair enough i say.

    • @alexbenavidez4500
      @alexbenavidez4500 Před 6 lety +6

      LilyBizkit his issue is that he went to CEX for a collectors item.
      The store buys in all its products, or products get traded from another store where it's been bought in there.
      This is not the store you go to get the Collectors experience.
      They are legally only selling the disc and nothing else.
      The covers and cases are just placeholders because they don't always buy cases in with the discs
      When you go into CEX, EVERY case on every shelf is empty. You take the case of the game you want to the counter and they find the disc for you on the back shelves and put it in the case you picked up.
      I can understand someone not noticing that this is what happens in the transaction, but the store makes zero effort to hide this.
      This isn't a store you go to pick up collectors items, it's where you get cheap discs from.

    • @alexbenavidez4500
      @alexbenavidez4500 Před 6 lety +2

      It's not illegal under copyright at all. CEX makes no claims that they're selling brand cases with their merchandise.
      The fact that they have giant CEX stickers on the back of their printed covers, and the obvious lack of quality within the print itself says as much
      It's completely legal and something you should expect at a resale store.
      The only legitimate branding they have to add are BBFC stickers to display the age rating if it doesn't contain that on the cover already.
      If a disc is fake, that's when you have a legal issue and you get a full refund for it.

      martin sheridan I can’t speak for anyone else but I only just noticed because I have always bought new games until recently when I bought a Vita and was given a PS3. CEX are one of the few places that sell second hand games so I bought three or four games for the PS3 from them. None of them were in particularly good condition and one had a fake cover. When I checked back in the store, I noticed loads of games had reprinted artwork. Honestly, it had never occurred to me that they would do this until that point. I probably should have known better but I really didn’t expect such shoddy business practices from a high street store.

      Yes they are. If I buy a game, that isn't sold as a reproduction copy with some warning then I'm expecting a 100% genuine product. The case, manual, disc, inserts/leaflets & cover art needs to be original printing or a reprint by the official maker THEMSELVES, not CEX.
      Is it that hard to understand how this works? Example.
      I collect stamps. I buy stamps and one day I realise some I purchased were fake, but I paid a lot of money for them and didn't get the ones expected (for myself or to re-sell it does not matter) what would you do? Spend 200 and get the wrong product and tell me you won't complain at all.

  • @jacobyne
    @jacobyne Před 6 lety +7

    Cex prints fake cover and shouldn't be doing it. I get that. Totally massive douchebag move from cex and illegal.
    People like to have a complete in box copy, also get that, but in this case cex states that there may not be a manual sent (as they also accept games without a manual as a boxed copy), so, fair enough from them.
    What I don't get is people buying games for a collector's purpose (not gaming purposes) from a generic second hand store like cex. They don't even have photos online of each product. They aren't specialists in gaming. With luck they'll have a cex employee that cares. What was everyone expecting? Mint copies?
    If you are going to buy from them, you know you risk the cex lottery, mostly ends up with a copy of a game with original box and inlay but no manual.
    Here's the fun part:
    There's always ebay auctions of games in good condition 95% of the time they end up cheaper and in better condition.
    "But Sete, I have to pay shipments of over £5" - Welcome to most European gamers problems.
    "But Sete, they aren't UKV versions" - Most games have multilanguage options, same stuff in the end, just because it's a UKV doesn't make it better.
    TL;DR - don't buy from cex if you aren't willing to bet a few times and risk getting incomplete copies. You can always send it back. Ton of other, better stores. Not so cheap but maybe you guys shouldn't place your standards and expectations too high.

      The casing is on the shelf before you take it to the counter. You as the customer have the right and should inspect the packaging diligently before putting down money.
      There is absolutely no excuse not to inspect the fully boxed product before buying. If you're throwing down 55 quid on a gamecube game and NOT fully examining the box and cover inside and out then you're not a retro game collector, you're just a punter putting down money on games without thought or reason. You should be asking the staff if you can inspect the disc before putting down money, too. I know of people who have paid CEX prices (which are based on near mint/mint ebay prices regardless of condition) for discs that are scratched to hell.
      If this chap had only done what he does at 1:36 on the video in the store he wouldn't feel like a total mug now. Looking at the back of the game covers in this way is standard practice among people that actually know what they're doing anyway... For all he knew the previous owner could have drawn a giant cock on the back of the cover. This video is a classic example of taking a product home and then inspecting it in more detail, then getting burnt and having buyer's remorse.
      He's bought blindly, feels like a tit, and is now salty about Cex. And I'm not a cex fan by any means (quite the opposite, it's probably the worst supply for retro games) but for all it's aesthetic, it's a second hand shop selling used shit that most likely kids (if you're going for retro nintendo stuff) have been playing with. There's no lottery, these people self-labelling as collector's (even though they don't seem to know what they're doing) should learn something called checking the products out.

    • @InvAltDM
      @InvAltDM Před 6 lety

      Just to be clear, they wouldn't be doing it if it was illegal. And just to be clear, the Consumer Rights Act legislation in regard to returning products relates to if the product is not as described or fit for purpose. If it's not advertised as an original cover, and he wasn't told by a member of staff that it is original, then there's no law being broken. Returns for a change of mind are not something any company is legally obliged to do, they have to follow their returns policy, but usually for a change of mind, it has to be unopened, (as is the case with the majority of retailers)

      Retro gaming is a bubble right now, created by nostalgic 25-30 year olds finding out they have money and that they enjoyed their childhood games and memories. I'm getting very tempted to cash in on my old games and consoles in the current market and just got to emulation to scratch that itch.
      No way is the real value of games that sold in the 100K's and MILLIONS only a couple of decades back, with a tatty box, at the prices that are being quoted by the market currently. If you're buying "Frogger Beyond", you're not buying "gaming history", it's just an expensive toy (or more likely, dust collector on the shelf)
      Once the hipsters get bored they'll be charity shop fodder again. Maybe not so much the SNES stuff, but anything on a disc for sure.

And secondly that he has gone back and bought further goods at Cex, even though they ripped him off! Like i said just cause you pay £190 for a game doesn't mean its worth £190, its just that you were stupid enough to follow the retro hype train. Example Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Sega Saturn lists on ebay for hundreds but who actually buys?

    • @vorebiz

      I remember when PS1 final fantasy games (VII through IX) were like 40 or 50 quid each a few years ago. Some of the boxed SNES mario goes up and down all the time as well.
      The market is completely all over the place. The current moment in time definitely looks like a bubble. If anyone is buying a game for £190 because it's "rare" and they think it might be worth several times that in a few years then they're in the wrong hobby, as you say the games should be bought to be enjoyed ideally. If you want to collect-and-speculate almost any other collectable is better than this stuff, especially if you're paying ebay prices +20% at CEX.

      pescod96 - Luke and Digital - Your views on autism are some what inaccurate. I am autistic and i think this guy is a cry baby. He managed to get the game and played it so whats the problem. I could not give a toss if the cover was fake. Its an old game and the chances are the cover needed replaced. Its not a scam. Pathetic is the correct word to use.

      Greg Marshall I know autism is where you cannot understand social concepts, it's more of a meme

    I never minded getting store credit for refunds and trade-ins from Gamestation, because I knew they (at least at my local store) used to be trusted since they setup shop. Used to also go there all the time to buy games for very cheap that made my childhood a very fun one to say the least and they were even fair on their trade-in prices... Sadly they eventually closed some years later after I left college. Ever since, we've only had CeX and Cashconverters. Both of which don't give me that nostalgic and happy-go feeling my gamestation store used to give. You're only there to serve them, rather than it being a mutual thing.
