I hate kumon, I've been doing it since I was like 4, and it's terrible. It does help a lot, but you do not know how many times I have cried because of it. It's like drugs except you don't enjoy it. So, because of kumon I've skipped a math level, and I think I'm a different person because of it. However because I know that I am not smart and I'm only advanced because of kumon, I feel pressured to keep on going, because I think "What if I fail school because I quit?" I don't think I've actually met anyone who enjoyed kumon. But by all go ahead, your kid will be smart, so that's okay even though they'll probably be miserable.

I suffer a lot because of it, and my parents won't stop because they'll be telling me that "You're already at N, why don't just continue it?" For me, I don't really care about my money on how I spent it. I personally care about my school life the most, and this is suffering me. My parent enrolled my to Kumon this summer again (I used to go there when I was only around 1st grade) and now they made me go again sadly. The memories I had there SUCKED, I remembered stressing out and crying about how much they make me do which made me feel a bit nervous going back there. I remembered taking the test which tested me on my addition (no issue) but the thing is I showed my work on a problem and because of that they degraded me. They made me take level B to which was like simple addition. I simply don’t understand how showing your work is bad, My old math tutor always told me to show my work because an answer doesn’t always solve the problem. And although the work is easy for me, they give me about 10 pages a day (20 sheets) and it’s stressful.
I dislike the system Kumon has and although it’s geared towards independence, I’ve learned literally nothing but panic and stress

I would like it if they did not have homework! I like interviews not pages for example, "Do you know what blah blah blah is?" Plus! There are some disrespectful people there! I have no idea how people finish Kumon! My parents won't let me out of this prison! It takes up 1hour of my day just to do one(For me), If I kept on explaining why kumon is bad for you this would be infinity pages long! A rap for kumon:
Kumon is stupid and takes up my time,
It would take me longer than thinking of a rhyme,
My parents think that they can help,
Welll that can't so I say welp,
KUMON DIE BOI CHUCK URSELF IN A FIRE (x4)
I rebelled against my mum, my dad
Then things started to turn very bad,
    The challenge got higher,
I wanted to die in a fire,
Kumon states that it'll be fun it's a lier.
My and my little sister rebelled,
We fed it to our dog hoping to get expelled,
We both served a sentence three weeks grounded,
My and her life had just demounted,
And to this it states we are still conjuring a plan!
One that will be wicked and give us a ban,
All you have to do is wait,
Whilst we make a box fort sit in it and contemplate-
KUMON DIE BOI CHUCK URSELF IN A FIRE

Nadine, I'm a Kumon instructor, and I think your critique was very fair and very perceptive. What you said is true: Kumon is not for everyone; Kumon does not cover everything in math (or reading); the curriculum has holes (very little geometry, for example); and it is extra work for students. As you also pointed out, the benefits occur after a long period of practice.
I would just add that the practice you get at Kumon is not the practice you will get in school. The curriculum is designed to help students think independently of a teacher at a very high level (such as your Level J). In other words, one of the benefits of Kumon is that students become better students--just as you are!

From my experiences, Kumon focuses on speed. For some people it shouldn't be viewed as a mechanism for learning new material. In fact it may start you several grade levels lower than your understanding and grind the hell out of you refusing to advance you even if you are years ahead in mastery in school. To give you an example, my son attended a school for the gifted. He transitioned from 5th through 7th grade level math in a single school year from his age 8 through 9 (age of a 3rd grader), and he was about to enter math class with 8th graders. He had also demonstrated mastery in Khan Academy up through algebra. Unfortunately we then moved. We started him in Kumon in order to allow him to continue advancing at his own pace. Kumon knocked him back to multiple digit addition and subtraction. He left crying after the placement math test because he said it was too easy and the teacher wouldn't give him a harder one.
One would think that after such a disaster that we would never have enrolled our son in Kumon, but both my wife and I were present when he was taking the test and we saw what we expected to see. My son is not fast. I hypothesize that because he advanced rapidly based on demonstrating mastery rather than speed that he never needed to develop speed. I hope that speed comes with practice.
I am not sure what to do for my son. So far we are trying a two pronged attack: we hired a tutor that comes twice a week to work with him on topics well beyond what he gets in school, and he attends Kumon two days a week to try to develop his speed. The disparity between what is covered in Kumon vs. with his tutor is profound.
I am still on the fence as to whether to keep my son in Kumon. Speed is important when trying to negotiate face-to-face. Speed is also important when taking standardized tests. But depth is of greater importance in any endeavor in science and engineering. Is it worth the mind-numbing repetition to get him up to speed so he can get an 800 on the math portion of the SAT?

I've been doing Kumon for 6 years, I am on level H and I think it is an absolute waste of the free time you have as a child. And because of it I can't focus on my school work, and my free time is consumed. I am currently spending my summer holidays just doing books. I don't even think that ive understood my levels. I think the examples are atrocious and all my instructor says is go get the solution book. Obviously this isn't the same for everyone but Kumon does more damage than it does good.

This is the one thing that broke me you are fine, ok happy when for a unknown reason or answer this hits your plate. You think it’s boring, not helping you or just something you thought you had to do. You gradually start to believe it’s helping you however you can’t find a simple reason for it. Nothing seems to match up and you know that you would be better off learning the school’s material rather than having such a dread like this pulling you down. There are many words to describe it foul, lethal, frightening and the list continues. your grades begin to descend ultimately leading to you begging your parents or practically writing a essay on why it’s too much for you and that you have to leave/quit. But as you most likely will expect they brush it off excuse after excuse ranging from “what have your friends been telling you?” Or “stop having a negative attitude towards it!” It seems to be like a punishment now, every inch of my brain cracking as it bleeds slowly while my skull breaks rubbing and cutting on every inch of my flesh. Your grades are at its worst while your parents yell and blame, you try to tell them but it’s no use, the constant thought that you won’t be able to amount to anything in life because of it mocks you like shock. Your left as this shell angry, sad, depressed, the inability to feel happiness again...
    All because of this...

I also have school and I do not leave early, apart from the trimester workday that is twice as heavy as the semester but I do it, When I realize that I do not have time or energy for Kumon, I do not do it because my priority is school. since I'm not the only one in my country who does some subject workshops to enter university. Why school is better than kumon:
    1:they give u 1 homework
    2:they do feild trips
    3:they do recces
4:they do special days like Christmas parties thanksgiving lunch and more

Bro kumon doesn't even cover some of the stuff that you experience in classes.

I'm on J and I'm 13. I've been going to Kumon for almost about 3-4 years and it's barely helping me AT ALL. It will only help your kid by ingraining the multiplication and division tables and fractions. THAT'S IT!! It starts off easy but when you go more up in the levels, they skip over the stuff that you're supposed to learn and expect to somehow magically do it all on your own.

Hi. Congrats on reaching such a high level! I know things can get pretty difficult in those levels (I've gone through it). If you ever need help with understanding, feel free to look at some animations and revision guide (J) I created for Kumon concepts/topics.
Pinterest board (animations are sorted by level, but you may need a Pinterest account to view them):

! Even if kumon gives you so many worksheets it actually helped me like I’m grade 5 but I’m answering for grade 9 and I’m advanced I’m now in level I and I didn’t regret it because in my math class I don’t study anymore and it’s so easy and I started when I was 2 years old and I had medals 🥇!

I'm actually wondering how I can stand homework from Kumon and homework from school. That just sounds scary to me.
