There's just a very thin line between art and kitsch, but there are some innovative bands operating smartly near, but never beyond it. Among those: ANCIENT BARDS, managing that balancing act with ambitious grace. Some say ANCIENT BARDS are somehow like "more sophisticated" RHAPSODY that wouldn't do the sextet justice. ANCIENT BARDS are definitely versatile enough to deliver their musical visions without merely being copycats. Their debut album "The Alliance Of The Kings" is an impressive proof of this and will be a surprise for many.
Keyboardist Daniele Mazza founded the band in the summer of 2007 - soon, ANCIENT BARDS were able to make quite a name for themselves in the local scene. Just one year later, the boys recorded a 5-track demo titled "Trailer" (of the Black Crystal Sword Saga) and received excellent reviews for the CD which contains a mixture of Nordic sagas and Japanese stories taken from the Final Fantasy series as its underlying themes. Between 2008 and 2009, the band played numerous festivals and shows, among others with Turisas, White Skull, Almah or Domine. These performances honed their style even more, and so they were ready to begin with the recordings of their first album in the summer of 2009 (featuring, among others, the Epic Choir Toto Corde and several guest musicians).
"The Alliance Of The Kings" will make those very happy who love epic-melodic, classic arrangements, and appreciate a sound hovering between Nightwish, Rhapsody, Epica, and Delain. ANCIENT BARDS easily tackle that task with their versatile mix of Power Metal elements and old-school classic style, their songs brimming with zest and classy guitars. Among all these elements, the high and clear voice of Sara Squadrani is a wonderful match, a perfect fit for the epic keyboard parts, which are typical of the band's delivery. "Four Magic Elements" is a powerful, rhythmical song garnered with epic passages, "Only The Brave" combines traditional fast Metal with sumptuous melody lines. The beginning of "Nightfall In The Icy Forest" features a lot of classical elements à la Manowar, and is a bridge to seven minutes long "Lode Al Padre" ANCIENT BARDS really strut their stuff on that one! "The Alliance Of The Kings" is laden with epic choirs, peppy guitar parts and ultra-catchy melodies.

One of those rare songs that has the production value of an undergrad assignment but the vocal and playing ability of a band that could sell out entire arenas

IDK why but I just found out about them today and FUUUUUUUUUUUCK! They are amazing! Crazy powerful vocals, shredding guitar, finger tapping bass, a young Jon Lord on the keyboard and of course that drummer, strong, driving but not overpowering. I listen to everything from Slayer and Death, Blind Guardian and Judas Priest to folk, classical/baroque/romantic to techno/happy hardcore etc. Basically everything if it sounds good. Each one of these people is good enough to build a band around them. Together, they are in such harmony, perfect compliments. it's like Toto (or another supergroup) of power metal. They are also so original. I love Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire, but they borrow, a lot from Vivaldi to Basil Poledouris. 2 of my favourite composers ever but still....

George Bloodyblitz besides the grammy thing (wich is a very pop price for bullshit like pitbull, justin bieber or britney spears and that kind of shit) i like to say that this is called Power Metal, and yes, is a bit strange to hear power metal without the dragons, fairies, rainbows, swords and elves, this title like "the brid of evil" is like "kids, come around, im going to tell you a horror story... ¡¡before breakfast!!" i mean, COME ON!!! goth looking... power metal sound... progressive middle-solos (wich are quite good btw)... a dark tittle... all of that may only mean that we have heard a new kind of metal :O

Ummm base line; super complicated, well played, guitar both rhythm and lead complex and well played, keyboard was ok, the music was epic and talented, the vocals were on key but bland. no inflection, no range. This band is amazing, this song could not be played by just about ANY mainstream band today. They need a new singer.

I got really into this track a long while back and since then I realized that all of the songs I've heard from this band mention some linked events involving the same characters. It is now my conclusion that the songs of the Ancient Bards chronicle the events of the pianist's D&D game. Quite an epic scope this game must've had.
