      Ha! I remember standing in Joe Louis Arena on a hot July night in 1981--I was exhausted, everybody around me was exhausted, the band was exhausted, and Bruce just kept laughing and playing and playing. And I thought, Damn! I wish I wasn't born so late and missed the Born to Run and Darkness shows. And I was born in 1962.

    If someone ever asks about the "Born to Run" album, just show them this video and say, " 'She's the One" is probably considered to be only the 4th or 5th best song." Then walk away and let them think about that for a little while.

    • @anthonysalvati5868
      @anthonysalvati5868 Před 10 lety +14

      that is very well said...but in my opinion, She's the One may only be the 4th or 5th best song on the studio album, but live??

    • @anthonysalvati5868
      @anthonysalvati5868 Před 9 lety +11

      I'm with you on that, I think that Hammersmith version is fantastic because it is so raw, it's the genesis of what that song eventually became in live performances. Hammersmith gives me goosebumps because you just know that Bruce went over to England with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove given the fact that some people were labeling him as a hyped up star. I think it's safe to say that concert put that notion to rest.

    • @stevej7879
      @stevej7879 Před 8 lety +7

      +Bman Here's one to also consider. You could very reasonably argue that "Born to Run" is the greatest song ever written. However, it could also be argued (somewhat reasonably) that it's the third or fourth best song on the album.

      All great points.
      @spacepyjamas & Anthony Salvati: She's the One is incredible live and yes the Hammersmith version is out of this world. Love the harmonica intro. And how he comes back to it right near the very end.
      @Steve J: That's the great thing about the Born to Run album, Thunder Road, Born to Run, and Jungleland, for example, are all great and all for different reasons.
      @Bob Gwartney: Love Backstreets, as a kid I didn't think much of it when I first got the album. Then I went to my first show (of any performer) and it was the first song Bruce played that night. Needless to say I grew up that night and realized what a stupid kid I had been.

    August 9, 1978, the Cleveland Agora coffeebreak concert. The greatest band ever assembled at its absolute zenith played the best 20 minutes of rock music ever recorded--Springsteen's She's The One medley. Mighty Max was a fuckin locomotive and The Boss totally relentless. The crazy part was that only about 1,500 people were actually there. Cleveland might not have been Bruce's city of origin, but ignited by Kid Leo and fueled by WMMS, it served as his launching pad into the midwest and then the left coast.

The '74 band had Davey Sancious and Boom Carter and was a LOT funkier and lively. The early '75 band was more polished and had the violin of Suki Lahav integrated into a powerfully romantic presence.

    At 7:45 into the video Bruce does his best Rudolph Valentino eyebrow move ( ! ! ). Remember, he was only 28 then, and sometimes he'd even lock up female acquantinces in the broom closet backstage to make sure they'd still be there when he finished his set. Youthful insecurity can help delve up great lyrics, but its not so great for interpersonal relationships. I prefer the 58+ who could do both.
