My grandmother, Nora Cumbee (Tidwell 1892-1984) was a public school teacher from 1910 until 1960’s in the southern mountains of NM. She rode a horse 28 miles to a one room school that she taught 1-12th grade to about 20 children. The school served as her home during the week. She would ride home on weekends and holidays. Sometime for just 1 full day.
Teaching was very different back then. There were no paid holidays, pensions or medical benefits. The pay was meager and teachers often relied on the generosity of the parents of students to feed themselves. My grandmother saw it as her duty and Christian calling. Back, really until the 1980’s most teachers were Christian and her peers used the Bible in class daily
Discipline was absolute. Children were respectful and obeyed their teachers. I know when I got into trouble at school…. I could expect a whipping. But that wasn’t as bad as the belt I’d get once I got home. I never felt abused. I always new my parents and teachers loved my.
It’s interesting. Discipline was harsh but real love was shown. I think they had it right. We could take knives and guns to school. I even took dynamite for show and tell, along with hand grenades and old war trophies. But then hunters safety and marksmanship was taught at public schools at that time also.
I miss those harder times. We were a much better nation for all our flaws.

These are interesting! The ones with people in them, more than the buildings. The kids look so serious.
