Exploring Sopron: a journey through Hungary's historic border town (border with Austria)

- 👉Sopron is a city located in western Hungary, near the border with Austria. It is the capital of the Sopron county and has a population of around 60,000 people.
👉The city has a long and rich history, dating back to Roman times. It was an important trading center during the Middle Ages and was heavily fortified due to its strategic location near the border. Today, Sopron is a popular tourist destination, known for its well-preserved historic center, charming streets, and beautiful architecture.
👉In 1676, Sopron was destroyed by a fire. The modern city was born over the next few decades, when Baroque buildings were built to replace the destroyed medieval ones.
👉Some of the main attractions in Sopron include the The House Storno, the Fire Tower (Sopron, Fő tér) and the Town Hall in the Main Square of Sopron, the Fabricius House, The Church of the Goat and the Column of the Holy Trinity, Saint Michael's Church, Győr-Moson-Sopron County Hall,
Esterházy Palace in Temple Street, Orsolya Square and Maria Fountain. The city also has several museums, including the Sopron Museum, Forestry Museum Sopron and the Pharmacy Museum.
👉Sopron is also famous for its wine production. The region surrounding the city is known for its vineyards and wineries, producing some of the best wines in Hungary.
👉Overall, Sopron is a charming city with a rich history and culture, offering plenty of things to see and do for visitors.

Sopron just 50 km from Vienna, it's a kind of small suburb of the austrian capital. Visible on it's architecture, and this geographical location gave the city a good luck, , that was able to skip that level of destructions, what many hungarian town not during the storms of the history, where wars and invasions followed each others.... The gothic marks on the houses in the old town showing this medieval atmosphere, which so similar on this part of the world, in Austria, Czechia.... I like Sopron, Civitas Fidelissima.
As we move away from Vienna and head east, we lose the medieval imprint of the cities, or it fades. However, we can still enjoy several well-preserved medieval castles in Slovakia, two in Transylvania. Speaking of Transylvania, here we still have several fortified Saxon (medieval) churches still standing but in great need of restoration. Back to Sopron - this city is an example, like others in Hungary, of beautiful restoration - I'm glad I saw it and we will definitely come back.

It is exquisite and artistic city and there's a part that reminded me of my road trip between Germany and Austria on one of my vacations. The people in Sopron really puts a lot of thoughts on making the place so welcoming and quite homey for visitors to browse around.
We didn't interact with the people of Sopron too much, but the city is beautiful with many quiet streets. We will return with a "walking tour" type of filming in the following months. Thanks for the comment
