    Funny possibility is that Lucius didn't end up copying someone else's ideas, he ended up copying his own because he was the first to invent them in his time, which went on to become the inspirations for modern architecture which he "copied off of", creating an endless loop.

    • @rage8673
      @rage8673 Před rokem +225

      Basically Luscious only observed the inventions he didn't know how they actually worked, but making the almost exact thing with lesser resources(compared to modern time) is the thing that makes him a genius. More or less the fascinating thing was that had it been some other normal people moreover from any other random civilization, they would have had probably termed the healing hot springs, the massager and the toilet as merely some magic, it was the unique thinking of luscious who actually considered them mechanical, and thus replicated the creation to some extent, and moreover the education he might have had got as a citizen of roman empire.
      Ancient Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Indians, Chinese and Japanese were truly ahead of their times with their inventions and ways.

He invents brandy (!) a big money maker, teaches modern numbers and digital values for *double entry bookkeeping*, other stuff, eventually manages a resparking of the Roman Republic.
    What makes it doubly interesting is that it was written just before WW II, when it seemed darkness was indeed falling over the world again.

    What makes rome special is their concrete
    Like seriously there are beautiful monuments all over the world but what makes rome special is they formulated "Roman concrete" when the rest of the world was using lime mortar

    • @_s_9920
      @_s_9920 Před rokem +91

      always important to remember that the pleasant climate in Rome during the era is a major reason it never spread. When Rome spread across more northern and western parts of Europe into much damper temperate climates such as Germanic territories and the British Isles they brought the concrete with them and it required constant upkeep with materials that had to be transported from Rome. This is a major reason why when Rome abandoned Britain, the villas and cities quickly fell to disrepair as the climate was not appropriate for such materials, we had neolithic monuments in England better preserved after thousands of years of exposure than the very hearts of Roman cities like Canterbury. Underfloor heating and large open ornate villas seems great when you have a massive empire and all its wealth and supply lines to maintain and staff the upkeep but once thats cut off such buildings fall to ruins within a generation and the ones that remain are torn down and replaced by less cold and costly buildings. Despite seeming far more simple, Anglo-Saxon huts faired much better in winter and during cold wet months and could be kept warm and repaired using only plentiful local materials. Following Norman rule after 1066 saw the construction of forts and castles make of flint and limestone, local materials suitable for the climate, rather than trying to imitate the withered remains of Roman fortifications across Europe.
      A good more modern example is how during the height of the British Empire, rich colonial citizens exported hard wood and stone from Britain to arid desert colonies to make colonial buildings in the style of Victorian architecture, whilst technologically better than local cultures - the local style of building was far more suited to the climate and when the British Empire receded the colonial buildings became irreparable and fell to ruins.

    Thank you. Just like many, I wouldn’t have known to watch this movie. Artists share different getting creative processes and sometimes it becomes too mechanical and we plateau. Best way to become open minded again is studying other artist’s processes and their specific resulting artwork, to remind us in abstract of what being open felt like and how we juice it to the last drop before moving on to the next project in an adopted behavioral pattern. This movie captured his artistic cycle and the motives behind its inspiration and re inspirations a few times and did them all very well. As well as the summery here that didn’t edit those feelings out summarizing probably 95% of the movie in a very meaningful and efficient time.

    Thermae Romae has always been one of my Hong Kong family's favorite movies ever, the randomness and the many funny moments and Hiroshi Abe's wonderful acting are what makes the movie so special!

    I remember watching this on TV when it aired after its theatrical run in Japan. I loved it, and wished I hadn’t slept on the movie and had gone to see it in the theatre. They made a sequel to the movie, which was also really good.
