Swift Games
This is like my 4th video on the duo, it's 4am, just starting this and I don't think I'll sleep tonight.
Swift Games i like the way they healthily disrespect certain protocols.. like receiving applause at the beginning and then walking off the stage 😮
OMG ... I just did that very thing!
Me
I'm certainly one.
After all these years Eric can still make John wheeze with laughter. That's what it's all about.
"THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT! IF ONLY PEOPLE WOULD-"
Maru Please, please, good people. I'm in haste! Who lives in that castle?
@@Leon_der_Luftige No-one lives there. We don't have a lord.
@@Leon_der_Luftige mol
but his laughter was based on his own feeling about Eric but not about what Eric actually said. the unsaid is British humour
And now we've lost Terry Jones, rest in peace dear man.
We also lost Neil Innes as well :,(
Out of respect for Terry I will forget Dinsdale for now
I love the fact that Eric still makes John laugh.
But what about Dinsdale?
Never mentioned this ever, I policed central London, an 89year old, attempted a three point turn, but unfortunately smashed into 4/5 cars !. One being Eric idles ! He came up to me, I explained about the old lady, he turned quick as a flash and said, ‘NOW, THATS THE OLDEST JOYRIDER IVE EVER SEEN’, his car was written off ! He still found humour, it was hilarious !
Great story. Thanks for sharing it.
Was Dinsdale in the passenger seat?
This sounds like his role in National Lampoon's European Vacation.
😆 Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
Was she a member of hell's grannies?
Damn, two Pythons having a conversation is funnier than most comedy shows and movies.
'no its not'..........
Well, I'm an optimist so I see it as a One-Third-Full Monty...
no you're not and no you don't............
Eric Idle is amazingly funny at 71 (in 2014), but John Cleese is the one you would want on your debating team. They're both great (and Michael Palin too). Will they be fondly remembered when we, the baby boomers, have all shuffled on? I'd like to think so...
They are, and were, all very intelligent and quick. My favourite Python thing comes from Chapman when they visited Germany for the first time and tried to get into a concentration camp. Hilarious.
Comedic genius! The world is a much better place because of these men. RIP Graham.
Graham Chapman dressed as a carrot for a nuke debate show - That's the Monty Python spirit par excellence.
Amazing how as soon as they start reading that skit, Idle's voice and demeanor immediately becomes 40 years younger. He jumps right back into that old Python characterization.
Where the fuck is Dinsdale?
@@stevebrindle1724 yyyyyyyyyyu YT YT yyy YTgu
These two should have a regular chat show
No they should zombify Graham and restart the Monty Pythons. Imagine all the cannibalism sketches a zombie Graham would be part of...
ScottishChristian That'd be difficult since Chapman was Cremated. If he hadn't been then maybe, but even so they'd have to stop him from trying to eat everyone as Zombie's tend to do if the Walking Dead is anything to go by lol :-D.
soeffingwhat I had completely forgotten about the cremation. Eh. I'm sure they would find a way regardless.
Yeah. Just some old guys talking about memories. Old people have such a nice way of telling story's, and them being funny and friends really is a cherry on top.
roger supernova
What in the world does their age have to do with it? They were friends, they were funny and they were great story tellers when they were young, for goodness sake.
love seeing John looks at Eric, its really like a big brother looking at his younger brother. They both are genius. A treasure.
Dinsdale was the real genius!
One thing is for sure, im from America and over here we are so glad you all got together because Monty python is one of the funniest shows of all time, and English humor is absolutely needed over here, i can promise you that, we love it.
My first Monty Pythons Flying Circus. Late 70s i think?!%&@# crs
A Fish called Wanda. Picked it out of thousands! The others were all too flat.
Hearing them giggle after they immediately left the stage again; priceless!
I knew they were going to do that too, somehow.
Usually the bow and exit is a high note.
Guess they wanted to nail that one first in case they bombed later? Or in case the audience left? Because HAH beat them to it!
That was Dinsdale laughing
John Cleese is so astoundingly good at telling stories. ANYTHING he talks about is tremendously funny!
Olle Rönn One of the few people to be able to make the phonebook funny I'm sure :)
Olle Rönn Agreed-wish I had a tenth of his charisma!
+GBatT
If I ever get a phonebook, he'd be the first one I call to help me read it!
You should watch his stand up if you haven't; "The Alimony Tour".. He's mostly telling stories about himself. Its one of my favorite stand ups because he's so naturally funny. He isn't TRYING HARD like most "modern" comedians
Except for Dinsdale!
I think it's incredible how well Eric Idle's voice continues to hold up. John Cleese is 100% sounding like an old man, but Eric Idle sounds like he has for the last 50 years, with just the _slightest_ of slurring (which, I mistly think might just be him speaking naturally rather than from a script.)
He's worth listening to on the Podcast series The Infinite Monkey Cage.
I think cleese smokes or used to smoke
Cleese is still 10x smarter and sharper than you have ever been, or ever will be. Ding.
@@foobarmaximus3506You're quite...silly.
10 times sillier than the Pythons ever were or shall be, in fact.
@@angeladawn805❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
There is no way the Monty Python troupe would have been as successful if it wasn't for the kind of school yard mucking about friendship they have. Bouncing insults off each other. What you're seeing are two 70 year old lads having a bit of banter but the reality is they revolutionised comedy. Smart fellas. Brilliant.
The beginning when they run around back stage giggling is so adorable!!
jsilence418 took the words right out of my mouth
Right, no more Dinsdale reply's for today, I am of in search of the real Dinsdale!
They're the only reason I would watch a video this long of people just talking.
+hannahthecritter
You are totally correct.
+hannahthecritter All depends on what someone who is talking about something more serious/sobering is talking about, but yeah, this kind of conversation is therapeudic, informative and fun. :)
I love biographies and learning about people, basically these kind of things are all I watch on You Tube.
alexziggyful any suggestions? Did you watch something as good as this? Hope you see the message, because it is one year old xD
You must be deep AF!
I'm sure we can all agree that John does a spot on impression of Terry Gilliam 😂
Let’s not forget:
These two men invented modern comedy.
No they didnt.
@@aon10003 I disagree.
It depends what you mean by "modern". No one invented it really.
@@aon10003 yes, they did.
@@rudolftrost3534 Is this a five minutes argument or a full half hour?
what grand old men of comedy they are; erudite, witty, and eminently entertaining
... and they wouldnt be allowed to "start" today with their kind of humor, because we have political "correctness" now.
Why do you say that? A lot of modern comedians celebrate bad taste and those brutal roasts are some of the biggest comedy events of the year.
we have people who are too stupid to understand the clever jokes these guys did as well now
"erudite"...much like the Piranha brothers; Doug and Dinsdale.
Wane
I can listen to these guys all day.
Lars Nilsson Great profile pic. I always liken Che to Hitler. In fact Che has some very extreme hateful evil psychotic quotes which as a person makes him worse than Hitler (a subjective view of course). I would imagine some "peaceful" communists punching you for waring a Hitler shirt, Nazi shirt, or something similar, yet those same assholes praise Che, Stalin, the Soviet Union especially, and Mao!?!? Like wtf? Nazis were bad but look at the SU, what they did to the Ukraine etc. Nazi flags = Soviet Union flags, Che shirts = Hitler shirts.
I love it when people like you get their idiocies out early. Makes it so much easier to tell that one should ignore every moronic syllable. Nice, efficient. Thank you.
That's impressive. Not as impressively stupid as cripple-boy, but still impressive.
Tell me, did you WORK on that particular bucket of garbage, or did you have help?
Cute. But see, cutting down a person, particularly a leader, into one dimension, particularly such a one-dimensional claim as "mass murderer", in order to 'win' shows merely that you're a sad little child with absolutely no concept of the real world. Poor little you.
Do you deny that Batista was a mass-murdering dictator with the benevolent support of the US, to adress Ché? Or Chiang Kai-Shek, Marcos Pérez Jiménez, Tito, Ferdinand Marcos to mention but a handful of OTHER US-supported dictators, or for that matter....Stalin?
Oooops. Didn't think of that, did you?
I've come back to this around five times, and it's just the most enjoyable talk I've yet watched.
Thanks. It is one of our favorite videos.
Obviously, you have never listened to Dinsdale's work!
@@LiveTalksLA They should do another one!
I'd so pay to see these two guys just go up there and banter. Two of the funniest men of all time.
In a way, you just did.
How about at the O2 Arena just having lunch and you can't hear what they are saying?
Before they made fans laugh, they made each other laugh. And that’s the secret to Python
What about Dinsdale?
John Cleese is usually the most recognizable of the Pythons, but I always thought Eric was the funniest... he was just very good at taking ridiculous lines and performing them as if they were completely normal.
+Splotch the Cat-Thing
I have to admit I underrate him. I think sharing the screen with John Cleese and to a slightly lesser extent Michael Pailin caused me to overlook him. That's a tough crowd to stand out in.
After listening to this, it's obvious he has an easy quick wit and natural gift for comedy. He even seems more able to ad lib funny lines here than Cleese.
Eric was the only one that wrote alone, John wrote with Graham Chapman.
Hard to pick a favourite Python, but to me Idle comes across as the one who enjoyed it the most. He seems like a person who is always in the mood for thinking up or doing something silly. And he has written some brilliant stuff, not least when it comes to songs. He's a genius.
its michael palin for me.......the biggus dickus sketch, big nose and the scene in the prison were pure class
Kev Shearer I'd have to go with Palin too
30 seconds in, and it's already an elegant riot. God, I love these men.
John Cleese impersonating Terry Gilliam is one of the best things ever to have happened.
That was one hour and 17 minutes of pure joy. Thank you.
Absolutely hilarious, I managed to follow at x1.25 speed. Bit shorter and no problem to follow. 😊🤣👌
I love the ease of these two men, and the history behind them. This is funny, and real, and brilliant.
It seemed like 10 minutes.
It could have been better if Dinsdale was involved!
33:30 He acknowledges that the audience is merely a formality, and it's really just him and his Bud having a conversation. Love you guys!
Is Dinsdale in the Audience?
@@stevebrindle1724dinsdale..
I wish there were footage of Graham Chapman debating nuclear disarmament dressed as a carrot.
Did you look for it too? Nowhere to be found, alas :(
Here's the summary : 🥕☢🚀
Eric is so sharp, long live the King :)
The world is a better place having people like the Monty Python boys.
John imitating the voice of Terry Gilliam, nailed it.
Yes and in fact if you noticed in many interviews when he imitates other peoples voices he nails it all the time. He's a natural at it.
'Why doesn't somebody boil up a whole bunch of water' ha! ha! classic!
They know each other's mannerisms so well, inside out - how Gilliam just starts saying things and lets the sentence assemble itself, just perfectly
I just love every time Eric says years
like "YUUUHhhhhs"
I am so grateful to have the pythons and gotten to witness them in my lifetime, the world will be a truly dark place without them❤
The shortness of our time on this Earth is brought into perspective when viewing legends like Idle and Cleese. Being finite can certainly have its bad points. These two should be able to live forever to entertain us lowly masses.
These 2 legends have figured out the recipe of genuine lasting friendship
Eric: "Tim Curry's in a wheelchair"
Audience: *starts laughing*
Eric: "WAIT NO"
The audience laughs at everything that's said, despite them all not being jokes.
must have felt real awkward after
@@thirdgen377 That's what comedians call a good audience.
I think it's a combination of "It's hard to take ANYTHING a good comedian says seriously." and "The laughter could have been a nervous tick to distance themselves from the possibility that IT IS true." John himself once quoted a philosopher (can't remember his name, sorry) when he said "Laughter is the social sanction against rigid behavior."
@@DavidTSmith-jn5bs Exactly. People will sometimes laugh when nervous or unsure how to react.
Holy shit was not expecting a Tim Curry appearance but hell yes
"Once a philosopher, twice a pervert." --brilliant Voltaire quote which STILL applies
Eric is one of the worlds unsung heroes. You just get the impression that he is a deeply indigent and truthful person. He also comes across as kind, he knows the game. I love him, his body language shows he has nothing to hide, he is a beautiful person.
fnutboy a bizarre and hilarious comment possibly inspired by auto-correct. Although maybe his haircut has misled you. 😂😂😂

It occupies more of your thoughts.
At least we should still have Dinsdale!
@@Malkav1805 they both sound pretty wise, as do you. A friend of mine said something similar about another entertainment giant who had passed - we should be glad to have been alive at the same time to enjoy them.
so many people comment about John Cleese, hello! Eric Idle here!! he's brilliant!
"So the Americans said we want to buy your show and we said what do you mean? And they answered "We want to buy the format" I and I said but we don't have a fucking format and Eric idle said "Shut up we do have a format and It's for sale." LOL
Breaks my heart to see John Cleese all these years later still have to fight back tears when reminiscing about Graham. When he was telling the story about the nuclear disarmament debate in a carrot suit you could see it In his eyes.
@Feiner Fug I did something similar years ago. There was one part I practiced over and over again and I could never get past it without tearing up. I decided that would just have to be part of my delivery ...
Laughter is the best medicine. These two have made me giggle all day, made me feel so much better.

Holy shit, that is a DEAD-ON Gilliam impression.
Two giants of comedy not on stage for 10 minutes and already cracking the audience and each other up.
The "memory" sketch is brilliant.
What memory sketch?
Eric’s 80th birthday today ❤️🤩🍺
John Cleese is the funniest man in the world.
That story about Graham speaking at the Nuclear Disarmament meeting. I fucking lost it at the "...dressed as a carrot!" part. XD
So did I! Even when Cleese is just telling a story, his comedic pacing is still absolutely perfect!
Graham really lived to fuck with people.
Dinsdale's idea I believe!
Jose - QUE? I SAID, my brother died last Dec., and he loved John Cleese, and supported him the whole way. He snuck me into The Life of Brian when I was underage. My late brother LOVED John Cleese, and he LOVED Fawlty Towers ( he used to call it Farty Towels - I think John would like that). He would have given anything to meet John. Still mourning him.
So sorry for the loss of your beloved brother. It appears that he had a great sense of humor. I lost my dear wife in 2020. I'm still mourning also. I don't know what to tell you. I don't think this pain goes away, ever. But I do know that laughter is the best medicine. "He's not the Messiah! He's a very naughty boy!" My favorite line.
Farty Towels was one of the 'anagrams' on the signpost to the hotel right at the beginning of each episode. So obviously John already knew about it, in fact he was the instigator. There was a new anagram for every episode.
I love how relaxed yet aware of the audience these two are
What a wonderful conversation. Two Greats - Two Friends! Enchanting.
This was a fantastic, historic evening and I was happy to be there. These two are brilliant comedy geniuses who continue to be just as witty and insightful today as they were on the day they first started writing and performing. Thank you, Mr. Cleese and Mr. Idle for all the great laughs you've given us for all these years. I've learned a lot from you two.
Nonchalant much?...:)...That's an experience of a lifetime! You're a lucky person!
One thing they both had, in spades, was the deadpan stare; other comedic masters like Jack Benny, Oliver Hardy, Buster Keaton, et al, also had that ineffable ability
I never ever grow tired of listening to any of the Pythons. And the hug between them at the end of this was very touching… to see the 50 years of deep friendship between them. Thank-you gentleman for so many years of laugher and joy.
I thought Idle was just making up those book titles at the moment, but he actually wrote all those books and others. lol
Two of the greatest living Englishmen.
True that
Brilliant! Thank you John and Eric for making the world a better place to live in.
Dinsdale would agree
John Cleese's mannerisms as an older man are so much like my late grandfather's that his interviews have a new resonance for me now.
I want someone who looks at me like John looks at Eric.
:)
omg cleese yawning when talking about Palin's diaries and travel shows. tears I laughed so hard. :)
Same. That was absolutely hysterical! :D
That look in Cleese's eyes after they do the memory sketch togenther...
Wonderful! Thank you Eric and John. Our World is a better place because of you two and a few others.
Both national treasures
I love how they make each other laugh, genuinely laugh.
I love how they still crack each other up after 50 years. :)
Spit my gum out twice. They may get old, but their sense of humor never will.
Cleese's cackle is irresistible.
Two masters.
"I apologize unreservedly. ... I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future." Indeed.
Monty python had a lot of fans in the United States in the 70's, I grew up on a farm in rural Kentucky and we would get the BBC on Friday & Saturday nights on PBS and I couldn't wait to watch the next episode. It's truly wonderful to see these two wonderful people together again; thank you both for all the great comedy you've provided for so many years, long life to you both.
You're lucky you had a TV then. And you're lucky you can read and write.
I love hearing them giggle at the beginning during the fake out exit. just reminds you they're still mischievous little kids at heart all these years later.
I liked all the pythons but my personal favourite is Michael Palin. Not only is he hilariously funny but the travel documentaries he did for the BBC were a joy to watch.
They're like a couple of little kids, giggling away. Lovely.
My wife bought me tickets to see them for my 50th birthday in Victoria British Columbia. It was quite something to see them in the flesh. My god they are actual people!
Here are two KINGS of comedy.
A perfect interview.. this is genius.. modern hosts/organisers: watch this and please learn.. because the younger ones run it like a quiz show.. question after question no humor

Two such wonderful persons.
Happy 80th birthday John Cleese. Thank you so much for bringing together Monty Python and creating the legendary Basil Fawlty.
Unbelievable how groundbreaking and brilliant Monty Python's humour continues to be after all these years. Love these guys so much!
The bookshop sketch at 48:30 is actually a documentary of working experience as a bookshop clerk, to the point.
Yes. I have the same experience working as a reference and youth services librarian.
Funny how you can see that evolve into the Cheese Shop sketch, which is my favourite.
I have seen other conversations with John Cleese where they have read the memory sketch, but none are as good as this reading. The chemistry, delivery and timing between these two is obvious. Geniuses.
That sketch is pure genius...
One of the best marriages ever. These two still cracking each other up after so many years. Just imagining them "working with" the whole Month Python bunch, and Marty Feldman and Dudley Moore...I'll never watch the reruns in the same way again. Thank you to the poster!
It’s a threesome, Micheal Palin just happened not to be there
Yes, threesome would be even better! Whoever said the English are prudes?
