    Great review, thanks! I've been very happy with the trailer for 4-5 years now and you only touched on the best part of this trailer in my opinion -- the retractable tongue. It's easy to stand up and store at the front of the garage!

      I have the same trailer (xt) and wanted to remind y’all that you won’t be able to retract the tongue if you Mount gear boxes on it. If your garage space allows, the boxes are great, but if you don’t have the space (like me), you will need to retract the tongue. However, you can retract the tongue without having to unload the trailer. I keep 2 kayaks and a 15’ canoe on the trailer when it’s in storage. Highly recommend mounting a swivel tongue jack (Reese 74410 works for me) on the tongue - makes it easy to move the loaded trailer around when it’s not hooked to your vehicle.

    Thanks for the information and video. This was done well. I use my utility trailer but it’s extra weight that I have to carry for no reason. But it keeps me from having to own two trailers. By the way I dig the hat, where can I buy one of those? I always have trouble finding hats that fit and Do not have a completely flat bill. The slight bend is perfect for fishing with sunglasses. Thanks again Tim- Midwest

    So glad you posted about the inaccessibility of the Malone box before I got one. I have the trailer and plan to rig for my Hobie. Can you share how you added the tongue platforms for your cooler with tiedowns securely? Thank you.

    • @AboveTheHook
      @AboveTheHook  Před 5 lety

      I just added a flat platform using L brackets. Then I just added the tie downs around the tongue of the trailer and tighten it down. The platforms themselves are not the strongest but they don't really need to be. The only purpose of them is to provide side to side stability, once you tighten down the straps the downward force is all on the trailer tongue. Hopefully that makes sense. I 100 percent trust it, I have traveled long distances on rough roads and not once have I even had it loosen up on me. I trust have 6k of camera equipment on it. Hopefully I answered your question.

    Not sure if this will make sense, but do you put the kayak in the J-hook so the bottom is resting against the long foam of the J and the sides rest on the short foam of the hook, with no part resting on the bottom of the J? This way the kayak is lying more at an angle. Or do you rest it in there with the side of the kayak resting on the bottom of the J, making the kayak just a bit more upright?

  • @Bill-xb1yg
    @Bill-xb1yg Před 2 lety

    How do the J Hooks work for you ? I have 3 Hobie Outback’s and Malone said I needed to use the Bunk Kit because the J Hooks were 75 lbs Max and the Kayaks are 103 lbs. I would have loved to use the J Hooks.

  • @iowamatt2519
    @iowamatt2519 Před 5 lety +1

    it's a nice trailer, but the hauling capacity isn't enough. I started modifying jet ski trailers to hold 1 kayak in traditional jet ski spot and built rack with Yakima bars to accept all accessories. Total carrying capacity is around 2000 lbs and I never go smaller than a 12" wheel. Total investment is around a $1000. Not dogging the Malone but with a full cooler and 2 boxes, you're probably overweight with 2 Hobies. But whatever gets u on the water is aces by me. Keep Paddlin'

    Great video. Will this trailer store upright with the tongue retracted?

    • @AboveTheHook
      @AboveTheHook  Před 4 lety

      Bill Morley yes for sure . The tongue retract kit actually comes with rubber stoppers to bolt on the back of the trailer so when you stand it up it protects the metal along with making it more stable upright.

    When you secure the Kayaks to the trailer do you just use the J hooks with straps or do you also strap down the front and rear of the kayak? I am just curious because I know when transporting on top of a car I see people securing the kayak with 4 straps total, 2 for the J hooks and one for the front and one for the rear. It seems like with a trailer you might not need anything more than the straps on the J hooks. What do you do?

    • @AboveTheHook
      @AboveTheHook  Před 5 lety

      Pete Moss no I only strap down the two points on the j hooks

    • @Canadarago
      @Canadarago Před 4 lety

      Hi Pete. I have the Malone Microsport XL. Same basic rig. For Kayaks in the 10-12 foot range I don’t run front and back tie downs, but for my 15 foot canoe, I strap it gunnels down with 2 straps on the trailer and front and back ropes for stability. Don’t know if the ropes Front and back help any, but they give me an edit sense of security.

    Great Video! I have the same trailer and started with the same Malone "J" style mounts and eventually had to change out the crossbars and mounted PVC pipes to fit our two Hobie Pro Anglers. So far the trailer has been a dream and our only complaint is that it's quite a bit heavier than our Trailex Trailers.
