  • Jimmy McRae was at the peak of his powers in the 80s and headed an impressive entry for the 1981 Donegal International Rally. However, it was the unassuming bank clerk from Castlederg, John Lyons, who stole the show. Lyons launched into an unassailable early lead and controlled the event from start to finish to take his maiden international win in his Sydney Meeke prepared Ford Escort RS1800.

Great video produced by Michael O'Carroll.Michael is the man who saved Mondello by persuading Martin Birrane to partner with the RIAC to buy the circuit out of liquidation. The rest is history.

The M1 was being driven by Derek MacMahon as a course car.Derek was a founding member of the Donegal Motor Club.He was also a great driver himself. His Derek MacMahon racing team took Derek Daly all the way to F1.Ithink that car is in America now.
