    When I get beat block I give my ears 👂 a break because you’ve probably heard the beat 20,000 times and normally I work on a new project or listen 👂 to something in the same genre to see if I get inspired. Also, I download the beat and listen to it outside. Change of scenery.

    You can actually download many midi packs for free. All Unison does is gather as many free midi chord progressions and drum loops as they can find online and repackage them and sell them for $60 bucks per plug in. It's nice if you have the extra money and you like having everything in a single organized bundle.

    • @MusicTechnologist
      @MusicTechnologist  Před 2 lety

      When I posted this video 2 years ago, Unison wasn’t as big as it is now and there wasn’t as much controversy surrounding them. I didn’t pay full price for this pack (which I stated in the video). I paid about $35 which seemed like a fair price to me for what they were offering. I don’t think I’d pay $60 for it. From the way the pack is laid out, it doesn’t seem like they gather a bunch of random free midi files and repackaged them, but if that’s the case, that’s too bad.

    May I suggest Suggester, an iOS app for progressions. It has IAP so you can try it, then it's about USD10 if you like it. I do and I have no affiliation to the developer. You can connect it directly in BM3 which I have yet to try. There's also loads of free midi on the web. Loads!

    Really useful, thanks man. For beat block I think trying things I've never done before that make me feel mad uncomfortable can just stretch my imagination and open up a whole new world I can dive into. For example limiting my instruments to just one thing like guitar, making me think how can I get the most out of this for chords, melody and feel, effortlessly. Thats a whole world just there, Its always how we look at it, really beat block could be gods way of saying, try something new and be bold, theres always a world of fun in reach, just allow that creativity to flow through in finding that creativity.

    Thank you so much for your invaluable evaluation of the Unison Audio. For my 14 year old son who's creating music could you please tell me what is that touch screen device you are using. It just looks as though it makes life easier to use your hands quickly than using a mouse via a laptop. He also plays the piano and is a natural improviser on the "fly" can he record his piano and then layer the music with beats etc. Which is probably the most competent DAW package that can do all the - record from his playing, drag and drop, mix, edit you name it all the necessities for making ones own music to bring to market. Also what package do you use and can it do all the necessities as detailed. Respect and positivity to you. Thanks from UK.

      I am using MacOS Big Sur and Garageband 10.4 Tapping the Loop in the upper right hand corner, I get Loops Packs: All Packs.
      There is nothing about files or importing files.
      When I tried to just drag those files in I get the Plus symbol for a second and then disappears and release has it just bounce back.
      I am suspecting these need to be somehow loaded directly into my ~Library/Apple_Loops or something like that.
      Even the maker does not know how to do this! It is an absolutely WTF moment for me. like 40 million Garageband users up against maybe 2-3 million Logic.
      Have you ever run across a Garageband person?

    • @MusicTechnologist
      @MusicTechnologist  Před 4 lety +1

      Great question! There is no way that unison can copyright these because they are just chords, and a chord cannot belong to any one person. They are just midi files with no accompanying sounds, so you won’t run into any legal trouble just throwing them in your music.

      @MusicTechnologist  Před 3 lety

      @Dioni Sánchez I think that’s only true if you fail to use tools like this creatively. Using a midi file can help you to focus more on sound design without burning out trying to find the perfect set of chords. These files are editable, which gives the producer the ability to tweak them and maybe even end up with a chord progression that’s entirely different. People draw and paint without having to hand craft their own art supplies as someone might have had to in times past. It just means they can spend more of their creative energy on the painting or drawing, rather than whittling and grinding.

    how do you drag and drop midi files into piano roll without overwriting the previous midi? I can’t make chord progressions because whenever I drag new midi file notes in, it overwrites the one that was there. This is in FL Studio by the way

    • @MusicTechnologist
      @MusicTechnologist  Před 3 lety

      This is a pretty common issue when trying to use midi files in FL Studio. If you are trying to stitch 2 progressions together, I recommend opening a 2nd instrument, dragging the 2nd progression onto it, and then copy and paste the midi data at the end of the piano roll for the 1st instrument. I would not recommend using the single chord files from the unison midi chord pack in FL. Instead just use the chord tab in the piano roll of your instrument track. All of the same chords are easily imported from there. There are several DAWs that don’t have this problem, but FL is one that does. If that’s a deal breaker for you, I would recommend checking out the unison midi wizard instead.

      Hey bud. In your channel rack, clone the sound you are using and stay in the same pattern. Drag n drop the new progression into the cloned piano role. If you enter that role, you'll be able to see what notes are being played in the original, itll show in grey behind the green notes ur using. Make ur thing in the clone, highlight it all, cut or copy it. *open up the original's piano role*. Paste. All combos in one spot :)

    • @MusicTechnologist
      @MusicTechnologist  Před 4 lety +1

      Just pulled up FL 20 and gave it a shot. I see what you're saying. TBH like I said in the video, it's really all about the progressions. Those drag in just fine into FL. If you ever want to combine 2 progressions, you could always drag the 2nd progression into another instrument and then copy/paste those chords into the other instrument. Not ideal, but not too hard of a work around. Also, if you're trying to get single chords in midi form, I would just use the chord list in the piano roll in FL. Every chord imaginable is in the little hamburger menu. You just select the chord type and place on the correct starting note.

      My bad on such a late reply. This comment must have slipped through the cracks. Not sure if there is a tuning fork auv3, but I think tuning bass by ear is the way to go, even if it takes some practice. A quick hack, play your notes up 2 octaves to get the true pitch of your 808, and then drop it back down afterwards.

      Each midi progression file is labeled w/ the roman numeral functions. Those files are inside of folders that are labeled w/ the name of the key. As long as you know the scale, you’ll know the chords based on the roman numerals. For example, in the key of C Major I-vi-IV-V-I is C Major-a minor-F Major-G Major-C Major.
