    1:41 (re: historical context) The demolition of the Berlin Wall was finished in November of 91. I wonder if that had any influence on these episodes.

    The long-range snap of Spock on Romulus makes me wonder how many similar pictures they have of Federation worlds. I'd have to assume it was taken by third-party agents of Federation, or sold to the Federation. (you can only resolve images of a certain size from so far away, depending on the size of the lens; can't resolve the flag on the moon from Earth, for example)
    The whole "Picard's trying to sleep with creepy Data in the room" scene is great, mainly the part where Data says he'll look in a different direction - and then proceeds to maintain his stare at Picard as long as possible whilst turning away.
    The junkyard quartermaster's stonewalling of Riker does make some sense when you consider how Riker basically just starts giving him orders. It's probably one of the lowest priority installations in the Federation and never gets any attention unless they want something, and here's Riker, dropping in to bark commands at the QM. Good stuff.

    9:57 I always assumed that the picture was captured by another agent in the same location then smuggled out.

    BTW I like that the junker guy uses the phrase "very handsome woman" because it is a call back to TOS S1 E1 "The Man Trap"

    When Picard negotiates for a Warbird, I always think back to when Amanda McBroom says, "It brings a sense of order and stability to my universe that you're still a pompous ass.."
    And it totally works out for him.

    Fun fact the Klingon captain who talks about Data’s makeup getting licked off was the talented character actor Stephen Root, best known from King of the Hill, Office Space, News Radio, etc. I didn’t learn that til a few years ago but I’ve always loved his acting and finding out he’s a “Trekkie” and really wanted to be on Star Trek takes him up another few notches in my book! 😉

    Re: Gowron, I think it makes sense that he'd try to erase any mention of Federation involvement from the history books. Such could undermine the legitimacy of his rule, and he needs to appear strong. There might have even been a back-room deal made with his former enemies: You don't bring up the Federation, I won't bring up the Romulans.

  • @michaelkotcher5491
    @michaelkotcher5491 Před 11 měsíci

    Spock didn’t tell anyone because he knows too much about Starfleet and the Federation. Starfleet Intelligence or Security would do everything they could to stop him, if he was to be captured, that’s a HUGE win for the Romulans and a massive problem for the Federation. And he’s smart enough to know that, and doesn’t want to make a fuss.

  • @nickokona6849
    @nickokona6849 Před 4 lety +1

    I don’t have a problem with Spock not telling anyone where he was going. Some of that is of course in hindsight, but even when I first saw this episode (I saw ST 6 prior. The movie that got me into Trek), I nstantly thought “ok. He doesn’t want to get anyone in trouble. He doesn’t want Starfleet and the Federation either interfering in his plan or being on the hook for his actions.

    I always did like both TNG and TOS. That didn't stop me from smack talking TOS to piss of my dad, while TNG was still on air. We ended up agreeing on mostly everything by the time ENT came around, and the ego-driven Vulcans.

    Thanks for these episodes. Pronunciation is MAL-a-KIE Throne, a lovely actor, who I know best from the series "It Takes A Thief", in which I patiently waited through all the Robert Wagner main character antics just to watch Throne in his supporting role.

    I was alive for the TOS versus TNG dichotomy. I heard a lot of people who really liked Picard, basically say that Kirk was a sexist wanker on legs. Kirk was a child of his time. The sixties. Picard was a child of his time. After 32 years, it's only the awesome gravitas of Sir Patrick Stewart. That keeps people from realizing, that the Picard was as two-dimensional in his way. As Kirk was in his.
    Actually, despite the willfully divisive politics of Whoopi Goldberg, Guinan is one of my favorite characters.

    • @Mephilis78
      @Mephilis78 Před 3 lety

      Love Guinan, can't stand Whoopi! You get a like from me. I just want to point out, that Picard and Kirk are basically 4D compared to ST:D and ST:P whether anyone wants to admit that or not.

    I had a little problem with a couple of the TNG elements in ST6. They used the Ent-D corridors but altered them a little and the D-Warp Core. That (Ent-D)was supposed to be a totally new ship.

    • @hamhockbeans
      @hamhockbeans Před 4 lety

      The Ent-A had a different warp core then the original Enterprise. It had the new vertical warp core. The fact that it looks like the Ent-D don't really mean anything.

    Maybe they weren't caught because obviously no one who needed to be arrested would be acting so suspicious. The security people probably just figured that anyone that suspicious was less likely up to no good and more likely working for another branch of the government, being intentionally noticeable, to some end. Paranoia can turn on itself.

    What I don't get about TNG's depiction of Romulan artistic taste is when Garak is talking about how grey is what Romulan's prefer, and that they have no artistic taste - their ships scream the opposite of this stupid idea, as well as their uniforms in TOS.

    • @Inignot12
      @Inignot12 Před 4 lety

      I think Garak had a bit of bias against them and that probably colored his opinions.

    I always rationalized the "Spock didn't tell anyone" problem in my head by thinking that he didn't want to risk word of the underground movement getting out. And he also says in the next episode that he was also feeling guilt over dragging in Kirk into the events of Star Trek VI, which very nearly resulted in Kirk's death and war with the Klingons. I agree that the "Spock is defecting" drama is unnecessary for the episode but his motives for not telling anyone what he was doing make perfect sense to me.

    Other than the Picard / Date and Picard / Sarek scenes, not much that stands out for me. I find the studio set for Romulus a bit underwhelming for such an important planet, though I'm sure budgetary constrains played a part.

      Harper Cole: It was the best they could do for the budget. Babylon 5 had the same problem, but explained it away with saying the Drazi preferred to make their enemies have to squeeze through their extremely narrow streets.

    I know this is a very minor thing but it's always been a HUGE pet peeve of mine with TNG-era Trek.... Why do they so often get rank insignia wrong? It's most notable whenever a Fleet Admiral shows up. Why is that every time we see a Fleet Admiral they are wearing the three-pip insignia of a Vice Admiral? This is the second time it's happened in this season alone. Later, when Admiral Nechayev shows up, she'll always be wearing Vice Admiral pips. It even happens with Janeway in "Star Trek: Nemesis" - she wears Vice Admiral pips when by all rights she should be a Lower Rear (one star) Admiral.
    It wouldn't be so bad if the pips weren't on the shirt collar (you know - literally right next to the actors' faces, where the viewer honestly can't help but see them!). Was it really too much to ask for the costuming department to create a five-pip design? Or even a one-pip one for Janeway? I know Trek often had to operate on small budgets, but how freaking much would - could - it have cost?!

    • @rafetizer
      @rafetizer Před 3 lety

      "Sorry, the pips only come in sets of four. We're not buying an extra set just to use one of them. You'll just have to make due." XD

    I can't stand Sella, this episode is neat to see Romulus and Spock, it felt natural that he would leave Star Fleet to try the unification.
    Neat too to see Picard and Data on the Klingon Ship, specially the sleep scene. But the plot is WEAK, anything once they reach Romulus is meh for me and Sella is just such a terrible villain, without real motive, reasons and even brains! The "politics" and how they "beat" her is also weak.
    I don't like this episode and by now, TNG really take a nose dive for the worse for me. Worse than Season 1 and 2.
    About Gene, i think that his vision Rocks! Yes, it is contradictory and HARD to write. But it's very unique. Rick Berman is a idiot, but he got up on my concept once i saw the son of Gene Documentary where he had Gene bust with a blind fold, that he tried the most on TNG to keep his vision but he couldn't. I like that, gave some depth to the guy i feel.
    Also, Star Trek got even worse after him and the more it get away of Gene vision, the worse it got. Sure ppl LOVE DS9.. but if we think about, it's closer to STD than to TNG and TOS.. And we all know what ppl (including I) think of STD

    "There was a lot of anti TNG bias from some TOS fans."
    Oh Lore, you pushed a button there.
    Sure, as there is a lot in TNG worthy of complaint for anyone who as a fan of what was Trek as it was given that TNG makes only a thin attempt to stay true to TOS, however it's a bit dishonest to ignore the outright lies invented by TNG fans just to make their show look better by comparison. Lies based on only second hand knowledge of TOS. In fact there was so much more anti-TOS noise that these lies have become popularized into mainstream meme-truth. People who have never seen TOS will know the lies popularized about it by TNG fans. In fact the bash TOS attitude within the TNG community attracted a lot of fake fan sadists into the TNG fandom, who were not there because they loved TNG, but rather because they got a kick out of harassing the TOS fandom. Fake fans of the same sort of people who stir up DC vs Marvel BS today. It's the broad acceptance of the fake fans who really make TNG fandom intolerable.
    So yeah, some TOS fans rejected TNG, some were pushed away from Trek by all the negativity, but let's not pretend TNG fandom wasn't far more abusive and intolerant of TOS.
    Lore, your anti TOS bias is showing here.
