When you mentioned “hunting for the colour”, it reminded me of my violin teacher at school, who would tell me off for “hunting for the notes”! When I took up the cello in my forties, I was determined not to do that, but be more precise when going for a note. I find a lot of similarities between painting and playing a musical instrument.
I put down a very thin layer of linseed oil and solvent first, wipe most of it off and then work into that. It means you're working wet-into-wet from the start, allows for very fine edge handling and expressive brush strokes.
I don't think I've ever learned that much about painting while watching a youtube video.
