    It was a wonderful thing that Wayne reformed the band in the 90s. He, Wayne and Joe got in a few good licks before the trio passed away. In this precious performance you can perceive the energy that they get from each other. And Put It Where You Want was the perfect vehicle

    I know this tune from the Crusaders since so many years that i can sing every single not of each instrument. This live version is so cool to hear. Carlton is definitively a genius. He's never lost, never lost his audience either, tight or lazy on tempo but always so musician. He's just great. I like when he plays with his friends Robben Ford, Steve Lukather, etc or Sapphire Blues Band. It always sounds sooooo good

    Good googly moogly!!! That was the shi#!!! Too much fun on stage with this Crusader's hit. Larry was channeling BB in his solo too, then went off to his blues place. Very nice! Loved it. Playing the chart that I found online, Joe Sample's Wurlitzer chords. So I'm having fun too...woo hoo! Tight!!

    Larry Carlton, the Fifth Crusader ("POPs" Powell, on bass, was the Sixth).
    Interesting that he picks this tune, as he wasn't on the original recording, although he was a Crusader, later.
    Wilton Felder is, as always, the ultimate R 'n' B Tenor player, and Wayne Henderson (God Bless 'im, the first to go) is as good a 'Bone man as Urbie Green, J. J. Johnson, Kai Winding, you name it.
    Carlton, a most intelligent jazz-rock player, plays here with a complete emotional abandon that would make Clapton proud.

  • @LeeOLumbroso
    @LeeOLumbroso Před 11 lety +2

    I agree, and Larry was at his very best when he was "Mr. 335" and had hair to his shoulders. Ouuuh, did I love him then and did I learn just listening to him! After his unfortunate gun shot wound, it was never quite the same. Saw him twice after that and the magic was gone, he was just quoting his old self. His "twin" Lee Ritenour fared better. I caught them sharing the same bill at Disney Paris 10 y. ago, and the clear winner was... Lee (doing a very decent "Wes", among other goodies!)

    • @funklover24
      @funklover24 Před 3 lety +1

      Okay, I never heard him live before the gunshot, but about five times after year 2000 - always great! 👍🥰

    • @LeeOLumbroso
      @LeeOLumbroso Před 3 lety +1

      We're from different generations, then, @@funklover24, and I take it as downright good ( _but expected, despite my nuanced critical comment_ ) news that a "Gen' Y" like you can be entirely sensitive to his immense talent! 😃👍 ( _Plus I feel deeply akin, as a baby boomer, to anyone of any generation putting forward _*_'Funk'_*_ as the most joyful and motivating music there is!_ 🙃)
      When Larry makes his intro' announcement, here, he summons his great initial "proving grounds" with *"The Crusaders"* solemnly and powerfully, but... any 'old-timer' will frown, after such an intro', to not see *Joe Sample* , the "soul" of the Crusaders, come on stage ( _he died in 2014, but this was 1997_ ). The keyboardist here is far from anywhere near Sample's sharpness and reference electric piano playing, which degrades somewhat the quality of execution of the tune. To account for that, I just read on Wikipedia that between 1995 and 2003, there was a conflictual coexistence of a new instance of the old "Jazz Crusaders", that Larry joined, versus the more modern "Crusaders", which was the product of Sample and Carlton co-leadership starting in 1971.
      What I'm telling you, Funklover24, is representative of the more precise musical investigation that a 50- or 60-year-old music lover will get to. But I'm dowright glad that we feel the same enthusiastic effect, across the ages, for Larry's music! ✌️

    • @funklover24
      @funklover24 Před 3 lety

      @@LeeOLumbroso Bro, I'm 59 ... :D And thanks a lot for writing! :)
      Since I never had the chance to experience Larry live before the gunshot I don't really know, how it felt (live is more intensive than a video). I heard Larry live five times after about 2000 and it always was phantastic, that's all I can say. But I cannot compare with his early period, so may be I stay phonky. ;)
      To me Larry's best albums are "Larry Carlton", "Sleepwalk", "Friends" and "Last Nite", which are from his early period. Somehow the corresponds with the things you said. Later he turned to a smoother period, which is not my cup of tea that much. I also miss Jeff Porcaro's drumming on the later records, which did fit wonderful to Larry's style (also love Steve Gadd's contribution on Sleepwalk and John Robinson's playing on Last Nite).
      Living in Germany doesn't give the chance catching that many concerts with artists like Larry and actually I checked all programs of the clubs in my area in order to find a gig with him, but never succeeded before around 2000. I would give a lot for listening to a concert in The Baked Potato in the seventies or early eighties (may be also some Lobotomy Stew :D) ... Anyway I hope, there will be some more gigs with Larry after the Corona-shit. :)

    • @LeeOLumbroso
      @LeeOLumbroso Před 3 lety +1

      @@funklover24 : Hey, dear baby boomer bro' indeed! From neighbouring Germany! 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 _'Ich möchte leicht Deutsch sprechen und schreiben !'_ ;-)
      I knew I was taking a risk of mistaking about your age and end up "patronizing" you inadequately. ☺️ I did and thank you very much for taking it the right way.
      You certainly do know what you're talking about, at your age, but it's certainly more manifest when you write me 10 lines rather than one! When I comment on CZcams in English, I tend to think I'm discussing with just Americans. If I'd known I was discussing with a "nearby" German fellow, it may have colored my reply diffferently.
      And to be complete: I don't remember either seeing Larry in concert before 2000. It's just that my extra 8 years of life and possibly the fact that I was a musician -- and maybe you aren't -- have made me follow Carlton's careeer while it was unfolding.
      I saw him live for the first time in 2000 at "Disney Village", in Disneyland Paris, 5 miles from home. His band was touring Europe with his "musical twin", Lee Ritenour's band. They did alternate nights. I saw Larry's band of the time on one evening, and Lee Ritenour's band the next -- _that was feast!
      _
      I had records of them both, in my collection, but Larry was my favorite. Still, on that double date, I couldn't help be more impressed by Ritenour's powerful new formation and their dynamics than by Larry's band and gig, which was truthful to what I knew, but with nothing renewed. Here's Lee Ritenour with that formation, including a great female drummer, HIllary Jones if you don't know him:
      czcams.com/video/o3rvmPEc4ZA/video.html
      BUT! ( _I was going to forget to mention it!_ ) I *love* everything Larry did with *Robben Ford,* who was my favourite guitar-player |after| Larry, in the 90s. That was in 2006 and rekindled entirely my taste for him. It's exquisite:
      czcams.com/video/c40eVSr6eUI/video.html
      EN-JOY, my friend from over the Rhein! :)

      @@LeeOLumbroso Greetings back over the Rhein and, bro, I have one more surprise for you: I AM a musician. Never forget, Larry is a musician's musician. 🤣😂🙃😉💥🥰
      I also have been at a couple of Lee's gigs and also heard Hilary Jones live, but in the band of Robben Ford, can You please forgive me? 🙃😂🤣😜
      This turns out to be a very funny dialogue, since it look's like we have something in common. 😉

    Can't agree with you on this one at all. Larry's grown into a subtle and often understated genius over the years. Larry's probably to the ES-335 as Jeff Beck is to the Strat. Neither is all flash, but a heck of a lot of control, tension, and stellar phrasing. Larry's fingers and the strings are one (or six). And I would not want to be forced to pick a favorite between Larry and Lee under any circumstances. Two entirely different guitar players, equal in their respective domains.

    Most would say it depends on what music you play.
    Some would say a Gibson is better for Jazz but quite a few jazz players have used Fender Teles, including Ed Bickert,Ted Green, Joe Pass, Danny Gatton could get ANY tone on his Telecaster.. Gibsons can be abit predictable.
    If you get the right Tele it can't be beat. That hollow, nasal sound goes great with Jazz...gives it a Blues/Country feel.
