In this episode Daniel and Mick wobble down the path of vibrato pedals! What can you do with them; how can you stop yourself feeling seasick; when will Mick ever learn that he can’t play like Robert Cray? We even take in a bit of wet/dry action and for a moment there it all sounds completely humungous. All this and more…
And besides, what the flip is vibrato anyway?

I'm home sick with a terrible inner-ear issue. Relentless motion sickness. This was the wrong video to watch.
Just rediscovering this two years later. I added some very subtle vibrato to my clean sound and now I don't know if I'll ever turn it off. Adds so much depth and dimension without sounding "like an effect." Awesome.
The Ventura vibe has a wet/dry knob on it so you can control the amount of effect , and if you hold the pedal down it ramps up the speed and when you let go of the pedal it slows down. It also has the option of being stereo in and out.... It's actually an amazing pedal for the money
Agreed. The Univibe tone is really good, sounds legit. The Vibrato can sound amazing if you set it "just so".
"Option paralysis" is a very apt term.
The band STRFKR uses a EHX Memory Man with the delay turned off for their vibrato sound on their album Miracle Mile. Which is my favorite vibrato effect ever
That opening tone was absolutely incredible. Well done.
Hi guys - love the show and never miss an episode! Would love to see you utilizing the Moog Moogerfooger line of pedals - so many creative features and worlds to explore! For this episode for example, the Cluster Flux would fit nicely in there. Cheers!
These A/B and comparison videos you've been putting out the last week or so are bloody marvellous :)
Mick! Great explanation of the difference between Vibrato & tremolo. As a Fender amp owner I can attest to the mislabeling by Fender. 🤦♀️ even the foot switch says “vib”. 🤔
When I last saw Robert Cray he was using Matchless amps, and it sounded very good indeed. I had not equated him using a vibe pedal, but now I can hear from Mick's playing that there is an element of that in his sound. Awesome. Great video guys.
To my surprise, the shows on modulation effects like this one, have been my favorites. And when I opened it up this morning I thought vibrato pedals, lame. Who uses a vibrato pedal? BB King don't need no stinkin' vibrato pedal. Vibrato is in your fingers. But I'm watching this video and I hear tons of sounds that I hear on albums, and I say oh, that's what you can do with a vibrato pedal. And the Robert Cray stuff- at first I thought Robert Cray doesn't use a vibrato pedal, he's a bluesman, with tone and vibrato in his fingers. But sure enough, there it was. Very nice.
I just picked up a Ventra vibe and I am super happy. The ability to increase the speed with thr foot switch is awesome.
This was a special episode. Loved Mick's pairing of his Strat and the Magnavibe. The Broadcast stomp is a bit of a find too. Cheers chaps. Yet again, the passion and humor you both provide makes this channel a weekly must-see. EDIT: Just reached the end of the episode and OMG, the wet/dry set up with the Broadcast/Tumnus/Timeline/Boss Vibe....you have just won the internet.
Would love to see an episode with Joel from Chase Bliss.
I have modded my EHX small clone with a switch to make it a vibrato. Ever since your video about clean tones and adding movement to it, I've had it in vibrato mode very subtley. It's on all the time and I love this effect now.
Awesome job guys. Especially love the last portion of the video. Cheers!
The Warped Vinyl is ace. Great prodution tool I think too. Puts me in mind of Boards Of Canada and William Orbit.
The trick with the boss vb is Not overdoing it. And if you fancy, put it before a delay and verb, that’s when the magic happens IMO
Had to pause this video to listen to some Robert Cray after that name drop. "She was right next door, and I'm such a strong persuader, but she was just another notch on my guitar ..." great track!
I absolutely love this Gretsch! Amazing show as always by the way!
I really like the new Digitech pedals. The Polara reverb is amazing imo, since getting it, ive sold my line 6 and Boss reverbs.
Stinkfist2000 I agree. love my Polara. I also have their Obscura delay pedal. Check it out. It's lush!
I was torn between that and the TC flashback, the toneprints on the flashback won me over in the end.
I've got the TC Triple Delay and the Alter Ego x4. The AE is a fantastic for my ambient stuff and the Triple for weirder stuff but my Obscura is on most of the time tbh. It's so flexible without having to resort to a toneprint editor like the TC pedals. Anything you want is right there and I love its' feedback loop and the weird sounds it makes when you speed up or slow down. Check it out...you won't regret it ;)
Ryan with the nice pedal gift, from Oregon. Robert Cray, spent much of his career in Oregon. I will henceforth refer to this as the Oregon episode. Good show guys.
+Jeffrey Ogden ha! Good shout J ;)
Great show, I love the amount of content you two put out! Any chance you guys get to link me to that Mayer interview would be appreciated haha
One thing that I wish was more common on vibrato effects is a random wave or sample and hold type of LFO function so that the frequency and rate would vary randomly and sound more like random tape wow and flutter. I currently try to emulate that sound with two vibratos in series set at different rates and depths.
Ah man. Mick's KILLER Strat into the Magnavibe WITH the dry signal. That's just a killer sound.
The Strymon Mobius! It has all the sounds. Univibe, vibrato and leslie.
What a killer sound at the end. One of the best you've ever got.
For the vibe episode: EQD Depths and Boss RT-20 (which is Rotary with a vibe setting). Thanks guys!
This was much more enjoyable than I expected. On the whole, the wet/dry rig renewed my interest in chorus: I may revisit the lovely chorus video y'all made (I love it, really) if I can hold resist NAMM coverage long enough.
CRAIG ANDERTON'S 'PROJECT 21' *PHASE* *SHIFTER* (WITH *VIBRATO* SWITCH) from the - *Electronic* *Projects* *For* *Musicians* book is amazing! Very professional, very usable. I built one 35 years ago. I called it my DETUNEATOR PEDAL.
Really great playing and fantastic sound on the intro section Dan!
Just bought a great chorus/vibrato pedal on reverb. Realy exited for it to arrive!
Uncle Doug's video explains the circuit in detail how vibrato is produced, search for 1963 Magnetone Panaramic Model 1210.
Cheers! Another great video!
Great episode! Im waiting for an episode on rotary pedals! Here are a few that could be used: boss rt20, ventura vibe digitech, strymon lex, ventilator neo instruments and many more! Thanks guys
I keep confusing myself... Every time I listen to a Steven Wilson album, I find myself wanting a vibrato pedal. Then I go to CZcams and start watching pedal demos, and I don't want one anymore.
So it's either Steven Wilson in particular or the full band setting in general that makes it sound good to me, I think. And since I'm not Steven Wilson, and in a band setting I'm usually a drummer and not a guitarist, I don't think vibrato pedals are for me.
But I'll probably listen to a Steven Wilson song later today and change my mind. Again.
For the Vibe show a DryBell Vibe Machine should be a must. Far and away the absolute best I've heard.
Thank you
You guys are so great. I can honestly say that I look forward to: each & every, excellent & informative episode. I just saw some new gear from NAMM 2017, and Dod / Digitech has a few new pedals that sparked my interest: FreqOut Infinite Sustain Pedal & Rubberneck Analog Delay.
Michael Caz Agreed. Digitech has been delivering some solid stuff, not only sonically, but visually and solid builds. I've been using a Polara since they hit tge market, couldn't be happier and parked my Neunaber Stereo Wet and TC HOF. Got a Digitech Obscure delay arriving today and am taking a good look at the Ventura Vibe.
According to Josh Scott (JHS pedals boss) the Behringer UV300 Ultra Vibrato is a very good clone of the Boss VB-2.
I just got one for £13.50 on ebay :)
Dan’s sound at 39:50 is hella cool
First: That Broadcast Pedal is fantastic!Second: Making a formal request to see some Earthquaker Devices Pedals on the show. Fortuitously they make an excellent Vibe pedal...
Oh yeah! The Ventura (which I own) and the Magnavibe (that I WANT to own)!
17:36 😰 Super save there Mick...again!
Thank you!!! This is the first video Ive seen that showcases the slowest rate of VB-2W. Its a killer pedal, but I wish its rate could go even slower...
Thanks to both of you for pronouncing Oregon correctly. Well done! :)
Great episode!!
Really pleased that I've come across this instalment of your fine show! I've used a Marshall vibratrem for years for straight tremolo into a Pro Junior. However, it was a revelation when I started using a modest wet/ dry set up adding a Laney LC15R and switching to the vibrato setting. Huge stereo effect with clean guitar clarity and great modulation. Perfect if you find chorus too much but like some space and depth in your sound.
+Martin Gaved We like the sound of that Martin. Nice work. Two little amps can sound massive, especially wet/dry. Cheers!
Aweome show today..that really was an awesome, huge sound there with the vb2 n timeline with dirt....would it be correct to assume if the pedal itself has a mix knob the same effect as with a dry wet setup would be achieved?
New viewer and subscriber here, great video. Excellent photography and editing too, thanks
Love the Broadcast into the Magnavibe. Bugger it, more pedals to buy !
Hooray - been hanging out for TPS take on vibe pedals. For me the undisputed king of the Magnatone vibe sound was Lonnie Mack.
I have a boss chorus pedal with a dummy cable plugged into the stereo output, making it a vibrato pedal. I love it! (rate low and depth quite high)
Absolutely Almost - me too. CH-1 with a switcher trigger shorting sleeve-to-ring gives me vibrato or chorus depending on state of the relay.
I love the warped vinyl. No conventional chorus can ever hold a candle to the ce-1, but that thing is so out there and unique that I could definitely justify using both. Very cool sounds there
+MrBingping just got the new warped vinyl HiFi, it’s unreal!!
I was hoping the Diamond Vibrato would be featured as it's amazing. Great show!
Dipswitches on the outside back of the Warped Vinyl is a fantastic idea. I never like to have to unscrew the back plate of a pedal to adjust any of the sounds.
Another killer episode! So pleased to hear you are doing univibe and rotary episodes because I'm considering buying one and there doesn't seem to be a shop that has a good selection. I'm looking at the Strymon Lex, Pigtronix Rototron, Mooer Soul Shiver and the Keeley Darkside, Montery and Super Mod Workstation as they all have a roto built in. If you could cover any of those I'd be very impressed. As far a univibes are concerned, I bought the MXR univibe, but can’t seem to get a good sound out of it. Its either way too much or not enough - maybe I'm just not using it right. Any tips would be much appreciated.... Really love the channel, keep it up!
The Minifooger Mfchorus was my favorite chorus/vibrato sound I ever had. I couldn't pass up trading it for a moogerfooger ring mod though!
I'm curious, who are some of Dan's favorite guitarists. Mick seems to be pretty clearly a blues-rock guy. Dan seems to head more towards the likes of Radiohead, Alex Lifeson and some more prog rock types perhaps?
More or less yes.
As far as I know
I'd love to see an echorec/David Gilmour style pedal show. Love his delay tone. Great show as always :)
Get the Boonar for multihead options & rhythmic repeats. Get an Alter Ego X4 if you want the most value for vintage-inspired algorithms. If the X4 is too big for your pedal board, then consider the Catalinbread Echorec. ---I have all of these + the Echosex, and that's the simplest way I can break it down. The Nemesis now has an Echorec setting, too, but I haven't downloaded it ---it sounds decent online, but not quite there. Of course the new Empress EchoSystem is also supposed to have multihead options. I plan to acquire 1 or 2 of the new T-Rex Binson Echorecs when they are unveiled late summer/fall, but obviously that's not in everyone's budget. I plan on keeping all the Binson tributes I already have though---it's ultimately about usefulness, not about a perfect emulation.
I use the Binson-style delays on the Keeley Dark Side and a DD7.
Planning to upgrade to a Strymon El Capistan, which has a multi-head mode and sounds beautiful.
Great show guys. Ive been waiting for the vibrato video since you video with steven wilson - btw, what an artist, just Ace! Love the sounds and show! One question : any chance of a video on Treble Boosters at some point? Cheers guys!
Hi Dan and Mick, it's Australia day and I've been enjoying your show before applying it to my new addition the TC Electronics NM-1 Nova Modulator. It has vibrato and now I'll be able to have more fun today at my Aussie Day at a Cafe gig. Cheers fellas!
+Chris O'Connor great stuff. Happy Australia Day Chris ;)
Dudes, I've been waiting since Episode 1 for you to namedrop the Lex. Please make a rotary emulator episode. The world needs it! Enjoy Anaheim!
Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe is also it’s own thing.
A UniVibe but also it’s own thing.
Some fab tones there chaps. The LovePedal Pickle Vibe is a suggestion for a vibe show? Gets broken out onto the board relatively regularly and no manual required Mick! Very much looking forward to Live Show too.
Phil Boyd I used to own A Pickle Vibe. Simple, great sounding pedal. Sold it (like an idiot)!
Hi guys, for the vibe show I would like to see the Dry Bell Vibe Machine which has also a vibrato mode. By the way great video! It was an interesting overview on an uncommon modulation effect. Very interesting as usual.
Great video! What was the “Dry Amp” that was added? Plexi by LovePedal?
Great show guys, what was that Robert cray riff? Keep up the great work, I have l learnt loads from your videos!
Great shout out for Robert Cray! Great player.
Digging the vibrato video, im learning better uses for it as it's always been an effect I've found unusable myself. On the subject of the Uni-vibe and Vibe pedals, hadn't there been a TPS on that already? Super excited for it regardless, I am thinking of picking one up at some point anyways :)
Mentioned before, but would love to hear you gentlemen have a go with the Electro Harmonix Lester G at some point...
I didn't get vibrato at all for such a long time. Phasing, yes; flanging, sure; chorusing, absolutely. That's how it was until I tried to play bits from Hand. Cannot. Erase., notably the clean picked arpeggios section in the middle of Happy Returns. I dialled in a sound on my TC rack unit (don't hate me) and loved it. I've bought a couple of vibrato pedals since then to play with.
Honourable mention for the affordable Marshall Vibratrem if you're building a small board and need occasional vibrato and tremolo, because it allows switching between the two with really usable common settings.
Lately, my favorite is Deco. It does a wonderful unique vibrato. You should check it out!
Damn there's a lot of money in that room
Man Bear Pig
Yea! At least £200, I'm guessing! ;-D
Damn!
Now I need the Broadcast :(
Mick's seasick expressions at 2:52 and 3:01 made me laugh!
"I was a bit worried I wouldn't be in tune, but it does not matter!"
I liked the subject. Ventura seems to be a very interesting pedal.
I came for the pedals, I stayed for the horn
Cool, a future show on Leslie effects? I hope you include the Nielsen, the Crowther, the Phillips and the Dawson. I think they're my favourite Leslies (and all somewhat vintage to some extent). 😀
P.S. The warped vinyl has been on my shopping list a little while and this just reinforces it more. 🙂
For me the way i make my vb-2 sound good is I keep it in standard mode and dime the rise time with rate at 1:00 and depth at 11:00. Not that anyone asked but I know a lot of people say you can't make it vibrato sound good in a pedal form
Hi Dan and Mick, regarding to this video I've heen considering to add a tremolo-vibrato to my small pedalboard. I've seen a cool used Alexander Equilibrium DLX and would like to know your thoughts about it. Thank you so much for the videos, every week I'm learning a bunch of interesting things :D
Great show!! Thanks again and great to meet you two at #NAMM2017 too!!
Inspired to put the VB2 back on the board this week. But I'm going to have to move the Neo Vent ... hmmm .. Looking forward to the Leslie episode too!
+Ishan Cooper cheers Ishan, nice to meet you too :)
This is great! I have been thinking of adding a vibrato to one of my amps in a dial amp rig to make stereo chorus. Great timing! Now I can have a better idea of what to expect before shelling out and compare a few different ones! Thanks guys! Were you running dry into Vox or Fender and is there a reason why? I also run a Vox (AC10 twin clone, which is a bit dark/bassy) and a Fender ('68 Princeton Reverb Custom)
+Bryar Gray Hi Bryar. We were running the Super dry and the Vox wet. No reason. Cheers! Try it both ways.
A big vibrato fan here. Cool one!
Love the vibrato effect that JIMMIE VAUGHAN has on some of his songs with The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
No idea if it is a pedal or on his amp.
For the rotary show I would suggest the Hughes and Kettner Rotosphere, Strymon Lex, Hammond Leslie, the EHX Lester G/K, and the Neo Instruments Ventilator
EHX Leslie please. That Broadcast is growing on me, seen a good price at Andertons too so must be fate!!! Excellent show loved all these pedals actually Warped Vinyl would top my list but would settle for the Boss.
So where do you put it in the chain? Before drives?
Could we please include the Dunlop Rotovibe in your episode looking at vibes? I have one, and love the chewiness it adds to high gain solos. Cheers, love the show, and watch it with my mug filled with coffee, tea, and way more interesting liquids!
Yeah, do the Leslie thing! Neo vent, strymon lex, Hammond leslie G something etc with a real Leslie to compare would be awesome!
I would love to see some Earthquaker Devices at some point. Maybe a show on reverberators?
I think a good rule of thumb for more tame vb-2 sounds is that if you turn the rate up, counter that by turning the depth down and vice versa.
did you do a Wet/Dry with the Warped Vinyl?
After this vid the Warped Vinyl has found a spot on my GAS list!
Thanks Dan and Mick, i've never been a big fan of Vibrato but that sound you had at the end was epic. Now to find space on my board for a vibe.. Oh dear...can you add in the MXR Univibe for that upcoming showAnd Mick have you done a video on that Mayer strat somewhere yet?
Cheers lads.
I'd love to get dan's views on the bbe sonic stomp (sonic maximizer) thanks.
When I hear vibrato I think of that lo-fi sound, such as Mac DeMarco or Iron & Wine etc.
I can't wait for you guys to get the new Brothers drive pedal from Chase Bliss on the show. It seems super tight.
Great show. Does the Warped Vinyl pedal come with a barf bag? ;-)
For Uni-vibe show, I'd like to see the Fulltone Deja-Vibe in the line-up. Enjoy NAMM!
For the Leslie show, please consider the Lex, Ventilator and the Destination Rotation Single.
Hey guys, so I'm trying to find an amp selector that will allow any combination of 4 amps. I also need stereo ins for my deco and maybe ce-1. Any suggestions?
Hi guys!
Would love to see a show on rotary speaker effects with the Strymon Lex and EelctroHarmonix Lester, keeley super mod and Mooer sould shiver (budget option).
Cheers Per
