Slash’s blues-rock romp Orgy of The Damned debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Blues Albums Chart this spring. Now, the legendary guitar slinger is taking it to the people with his 29-date S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Blues Festival tour. When Slash’s Blues Ball Band played an intimate pre-tour gig at the Gibson Garage in Nashville, they invited John Bohlinger and the PG team.
Before shooting our Rundown with singer/guitarist Tash Neal and Slash’s tech, Ace Bergman, Slash sat down with PG for a chat. The maestro tells Bohlinger about how he found his blues sound on a 1963 Gibson ES-335 he picked up at Norman’s Rare Guitars in Los Angeles. That guitar was copied by the Gibson Custom Shop for the Slash 1963 ES-335 Collector’s Edition model, which he now brings on the road.
On Orgy of the Damned, Slash and company are digging into a different repertoire than his usual hard-rock-’n’-rollin’ fare. In this case, he’s re-exploring influences and old bands. “All these songs had … a very specific influence on me,” he explains. Back in the ’90s, Slash formed his Blues Ball Band, and he was inspired to pick that project back up, record, and hit the road to play “music that I really loved when I was a kid.”

Tnx👍👏👏👏
Nice guy! I saw him two weeks ago with my friend Warren Haynes.
Man. I love seeing Slash so put together and living his best life now. 🤘😎👏👏👏
Seriously. Who knew he'd become such a good dude? All we knew of was Rockstar Slash before this. He's really become the "elder statesman" of late. He seems like he's still a soft-spoken, regular azz dude even though we know he's one of the most well-known and identifiable musicians in the entire world!
@@J.C... - Same with Duff. I was in college when "appetite" came out, and once i saw Duff being interviewed i thought he'd be dead within 5 years. He's really an articulate and intelligent guy. I'm glad both got it together.
Yes, they were so messed up it was crazy. And always acting like douches bc they were so wasted and carefree. Now they're both two of the classiest dudes around.
“He loves having all 6 there” 😂😂 spoken like a true roadie
I always like slash , very humble and respectful man . He never changed.
Pretty simple....I see Slash, I click.
"they call it a tube screamer because it makes the tubes scream" 🤯
My sister introduced me to her friend Saul (Slash) back in 1980’s. He still worked at the Music store on Fairfax right above Melrose. And my sister took me over to his house. Such a cool guy! Later in life when I was in high school I went with a friend to The Troubadour to see Guns N’ Roses and left partially (temporarily) deaf! 😣 Axl’s voice! 😮😅
Lucky! 🙏👍
So great to see slash’s gear on smaller gigs this is killer 🔥
This was really cool, Amazing that Slash can go from an Arena level rig with wireless and in ears and all sorts to a proper old school board and amps all on cables and be quite happy to just play.
Saw Slash with a version of the Blues Ball Band at a Guitar Show in London Docklands Arena back in the late 90s. I went both days so I could see them play twice. Was incredible!
Just found out the audio from the gig is on CZcams!
I was there on the Sunday in the photographers pit. Great show.😊👍
Yes!! What we really want in every rig rundown; to hear the artist shred!! Hell yes!!
This one was a long time coming, glad it finally happened!
Dreams do come true!
i love Slash !!! everything he does is so tastefull !!! and a humble man he seems ..
Love the guy explaining those classic pedals to us like we're five lol
Exactly what I thought 'This is a tube screamer'...
While I understand the sentiment, it is a rig rundown so, they kinda have to talk about what dudes are using. You never know, maybe the 4 guitar players that don't have a TS needed to know.
@thseed7 while you're not wrong, it's almost impossible to have never heard of most of that stuff before clicking a "rig rundown". Also I'm not upset with him talking about them it's more with him giving a generic answer you could read on the box rather than explaining how slash uses them.
Working for an artist like Slash, you get used to doing press for mainstream media
You do realize that some people don't know anything about pedals and actually appreciate that right?
Shouldn't be so arrogant and full of yourself you jerk
Living legend. GREAT interview too, Jon... Thanks for delving in on the equipment questions & specifics... It's like life-giving air to us guitar geeks😜🤣🎼🎵🎶🎸
So great to see Tash on this tour!! He's a monster!!!
The tech explaining the pedals as if John’s a CNN reporter
Apparently that one pedal is referred to as a tube "screamer"? Everybody catch that? Does anybody have experience using such a device?
with an artist like Slash, there is actual press to do with CNN and such. He might have gotten used to answer questions from non-guitar outlets.
Well, considering he was surprised to see Slash with a Travis Bean and an explorer, two guitars he used on record on Illusions, I'd say he's right to treat him like he knows nothing.
@@phnelson033 That bit really made me laugh.
Ha yup though I like how cool JB is with it. He’s like yeah sure, Tube Screamer, yup😎.
That was a fantastic conversation... Two phenomenal guitarists, Geekin over Gear.
Love that he's doing pedal boards and trying other amps and such. Makes sense when he's playing blues and not the GN'R sound.
Happy that his blues rec workt out, hope they dont leave it with just the one. ❤
It’s always beautiful to see the wisdom and elegance that experienced individuals have.
Blues was always about the soul and it’s beautiful to see slash (a hard rock powerhouse) mellow down and letting his soulful playing shine instead of the energetic rock n roll - which I love, but good to mix it up.
Enjoyed every minute of this! Well done John! The relaxed vibe of this is HARD to do. Well done....and the main man is just the coolest and the most relaxed and intelligent guy in the business.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great band and rundown! I think it’s hilarious to hear John’s voice starting to leak out of his voice box in anticipation of responding to the ‘interviewee’… @ 35:59, 36:09 😂
Thanks for sharing!!
Always loved Slash. You can tell how much he loves guitar. Even after so many years of rocking out, his enthusiasm and love for playing and gear is totally evident.
Tash is a good guitar player, i never heard of him till now
Love this back to basics approach...Slash is growing as a musician and having the time of his life!
ACE!! Miss ya man…
Love the how in depth this is great video ! 🤘🏻🎩
Muchísimas gracias por esta fantástica entrevista, Saludos 😉😉
great rig rundown.. thank you!
Glad you like it!
Slash and other guitarist are polite. Note when Slash says thank you at the end of his interview.
Slash is the coooolest guitar player that ever lived…what a nice guy!
It is WONDERFUL to listen to Slash, who has had massive success and who is revered - worshiped, even - by guitarists of every age, genre, and skill level speak with such humility. This man’s Mom raised him right.
Thanks guys! Amazing video! What a goat!
Slash you are so good bro
Saw their first show supporting the new album in Bonner Montana on July 5th it was kick ass!!!
Thanks Jon
once you notice that Hummingbird moving by itself on the right, you can't unsee it
Really intense when I was watching on x1.5 speed 😂
Of Course, when a Rock MegaStar such as Slash goes into Norm’s Rare Guitars he gets the White Glove treatment but when a Nobody Me goes to Norm’s, as I did recently, Norm chased me out the store within 15 minutes and He sent one of his Henchmen to do the Dirty Work.
How many Gibson guitar sales has Slash influenced? Man, he's kept that company afloat for 35 years. Coolest mofo out there. One of a kind.
I wouldn't go as far as saying that he's keeping the company afloat but he sure as hell saved Gibson from going belly up in the late eighties. With a knock off.. 🤣🤣
I don’t know anything about guitars but I love them. They all look fantastic
That was incredible!! One of my all time favorites! Great job John, thanks for the great music Slash and the gang
Glad you enjoyed it
@@premierguitar I absolutely love these. I dream of one day being on rig rundown with John. One day!
I loved his first record I love this record he’s always getting better and he’s always got a good ear for tone I hope his next solo album doesn’t take a decade and goes back to the hard rock sound
never been a big guns fan, but this guy is really special and i love everything he’s done…beside guns😅❤
Marshall disliked this interview
Amazing video! Great rig! Congratulations 👏❤️🫂🙏🙏
...just like that. Just like that you have Slash on
0:10 just came up in my feed and OOOOHHHH YEEEEAAAAAHHH!!!!!
Couldn't click fast enough
Love this project
10:40 that acoustic is haunted.
Loving those M80 Super 59 Combos and the Scala Explorer. I’ve noticed that Leo doesn’t tend to relic the fingerboards, seems like a good compromise on the overall look of the guitar.
Legend.
Such a great Album , big fan of all your work slash but to me the orgy of the damned has absolutely reignited my love of playing jamming along to the album . Great interview as always Jon B
Awesome! :)
Slash thought people only wanted to hear him play his own stuff. Oh no. Blues cats enjoy listening to others play the blues standards. The Allman Brothers Band made their legacy behind just that...and a sprinkling of some great songs by Gregg and Dickey!
Let’s f’n go!
Very nice! ❤
Pretty Damn cool John!!
I wish I could like this videos 300x more.
Is it just me or does anyone else want to see a Bohlinger bobblehead?
Count us in!
The dude who saved Gibson Les Paul guitars
That phaser pedal + that playing sounded mega cool!
Papa was a rolling stone is my fave track, especially when it kicks in half way through.
I think I heard Slash say in an interview that he liked how her voice sounded so young compared to the other guys but I wish a woman with more grit in her voice sang it. Like Izzy Hale or something
Someone should do a rig rundown for John himself
And here comes another Slash sig. The 335 he's had for 2 years!
I can sympathize with the orange tape because my eyes are getting weaker as I age so I guess it makes it easier to know where the switch is especially when ur wearing sunglasses.
That explorer 👌 Slash surprised me
I was not aware Slash played pedal steel. Premier Guitar informing the masses.
Just happened to buy a 335 that fit the album, then Gibson reissued it. All pure coincidence. Huge Slash fan, and own the new Jessica model. But if you believe this story you believe anything. Album released on Gibson records - just for good measure
Well, I think they have enough phasers on stage (4), between them … lol …
Gibson es335 Slash announcement in 3....2.....
Love that real tube 2203
Ox is great I also run
Torpedo captor x hoping UA gives us a OXbox version 2, been watching every namm but no dice yet
Your tone is great, mines not to shabby with numerous Marshalls and Boogies primarily my AxeFx3 can’t touch these live
I don’t care what anyone says
My ‘82 Marshall 2203 stack is all original and my first high end pro rig now it’s, plexis, jvm 410, DSLs, jvm 800s-900s
Then a hanfull of boogie’s including the mark vii, real tubes just sound better to my aging experienced ears
Good vid!
Every gig, any musician plays should be recorded(period)! Those times are time you'll never get back. Insights In Sound - Robert Scovill, Live Sound Pro - S15, E7!!
I was just at the Gibson Garage before the 4th of July. I was eyeballing a new 335 then, now I'm REALLY considering one.
He should have George Lynch as a guest, that guy is a great blues player too.
What I would call a SUBSTANTIAL CONSISTENCY, an sound with that tone that can't be explained from language but only through the interaction , by you just play IT , AND FEEL IT !!!!
when you pick in mind a bunch of rock bands and most of them just sing those old stuff until today. Slash is a machine, a true rockstar who never get tired of create new stuff, he got three different kind of projects (GNR, SMKC and Blues Band). Its not just about money, cause he could stop going on a road after the money earned with the monster GNR tour
Love the cat in the hat! But never seen a guitar become a signature guitar as this 335 with literally no history or mojo attached to it. like the story is: yeah Norm sold it to me, I recorded an album with it. Enters Gibson: man let’s make a slash signature…. 😂
Have you seen how many signature Gibsons and Epiphones Joe Bonamassa has had? I was on his email list for a while (the volume of tchotchkes they try to hawk you is unbelievable) and there was a new one about fortnightly…
It's gone beyond a joke with gibson. Anything to rip people off
🤙☆"SLASH"☆🤙
Slash is playing Sacramento July 12th i wasn't familiar with this project and tickets were $59 at the time then the music came out and then the tickets were $130 then I'm retired and get paid once a month so I'll miss this show 😢 and it is 10 days before my birthday I'm 1 day older than SLASH so have a happy birthday SLASH btw I play a les paul and from Northern California growing up on the sunset is a good documentary of SLASH it was almost a mirror of how I grew up bmx and. then guitar i do still ride the crashes hurt a lot more at 58 my last one I ended up looking at the oil pan of the car i went head on with ouch 😅 I walked away from it 😊
just check the day of or day before the show if it doesn’t sell out prices will likely drop!
@@artymartmusic ty
I think Veleno made the first aluminum neck guitars. In fact the whole thing was aluminum. I owned one for 20 years then sold it to a movie producer. Rock on.
BBE Soul Drive, never heard of that one!
Finally a good rig rundown 😊
That's (a copy) of "Big Ed" Thomson's Explorer from Cincy'? Big Ed was awesome!
I think Big Ed sold that for about $25,000 back in the early 90's, and Ed's Brother owned the V'. Wow...Had no idea!
Come up to Alaska,... please.
Speaking of re-issuing, Electrical Guitar Co out of FL is re-issuing the good ol' Travis Beans -- just with some modernized tweaks, taking advantage of 21st century build & design.
I am not historically the world’s biggest fan of Slash’s playing after Lies or so, even though I also love snakes, but he’s a seemingly chill down to earth cat. I actually love hearing him play this way and on an ES-335! (The best Gibson model imo) Actually very interested in seeing them live.
58 explore , i thought new explorer model from around late 60s to early 70s, never thought 1958 that early .
I like Slash Blues it's good
The D’Darrio ad on a Slash video. Who is like Ernie Ball’s biggest name
I didn't know Timothy olephant was an interviewer for guitar.
Id love to see RR's on the STAFF on Premier Guitar!
❤
well tash neal just got 1 new fan.... dude is such a chill likeable guy and then he just shreds n says ya its pretty loud i guess" ahaha Love it!!!! we need more of him with slash or even solo ... im here for it!!!! (maybe im late and hes been super famous for a while in underground scenes my bad guys, if thats the case!)
This PG guy always reminds me of the dude who plays Drew Cain on General Hospital. They sound like twins.
"Slash is playing regular ol', meat-and-potatoes", working-man gear on this tour..." Except for everything that's INSANELY expensive or INCREDIBLY rare... Lemme try to explain what a "TUBE SCREAMER" does...
slash you could have called me to play on your record 😝... a pleasure to see the master on a 335 ... John always the best
👍🤘
Great video. Please try to get Dave Navarro next
The black tape on the pedal knobs is just to make sure he doesn't knock the settings right? Rather than hiding the settings?
Nailed it.
@@premierguitar Thanks! Really enjoyed this video. Especially cool to see Slash going a bit old school with the organic bar band type set-up. Refreshing! Love John as well! Ha!
It hides his super secret tone master tricks!
