    AC/DC shirt = automatic sub! Kidding, was already subbed. Favorite rock band of all time, mainly the early stuff through the Back in Black album. Oh the parties and “good times” (aka....🙎‍♀️) during the 80’s jamming to AC/DC. Oh, shrimp look great as always. Good info for shrimp noobs like me 👍

    Mark, what brand of tank do you use? You use only sponge filters? The open tops of your tanks make light more accessible. Does open top allow for too much evaporation into an ordinary home with no shrimp room? Thank you, Shrimp Mentor. Jorja Shannon TexasGirl

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  Před 3 lety

      No real brands they are all a mix of makers and second hand stuff, yes I am leaning towards more sponge filters because they have benefits over powerheads, but if you just have a few tanks in a bedroom or something I would still go with a powerhead as they dont make so much noise. and yes no cover on the tops of tanks can give you issues especially in winter as the moisture condenses on windows etc.

    Mark, I noticed most breeders of shrimp and tropical fish line breed and just cull the irregulars. Doesn't a variety of genes in the gene pool make for a healthier and stronger animal? Zoos keep detailed records to make sure the gene pool is varied and they don't create weak interbred animals. In nature animals would have a huge area to explore through, finding unrelated mates. So wouldn't it be a better final outcome if you were to buy great stock from various sources and record the breedings and manipulate the genes with little line breeding?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  Před 6 lety

      You are 100% correct , nearly all of my shrimp in most of the tanks are from mixed stock , after the winter is done here I can get more shrimp too :)

    • @dominic.h.3363
      @dominic.h.3363 Před 6 lety

      DO-WORK-SON
      Except my cherries are between nine and twelve millimeters, and my female Amano is four centimeters maximum, so my cherries are several times smaller than they should be, and my Amano is what I would consider the lower threshold of normal size for the species, that's why I asked Mark how he can breed his Neocaridina to the size of Caridina shrimp, mine are freakishly small for sexually mature specimen.

    • @R006WRX
      @R006WRX Před 6 lety

      my amano shrimp are in the 5cm range. and my cherries are about 25mm at the max, but most are around 12mm like yours are. so i dont think your shrimp are small, sounds like they are in the normal range for the species.

    PLEASE READ- A LITTLE LONG BUT WORTH IT I PROMISE & YOU COULD HELP ME OUT W/ SOME VALUEABLE INFORMATION HELP-
    *A little background of my history in this entire industry*
    I have been shrimp keeping neo's for about 6 years now but had a lul of not having time or stability for about a year where I didnt have time to properly care for them, breed them (hobby super small scale, trading locally, etc) so I sold them all. The following year I started back up again & started breeding a couple colonies of shrimp, had two medium size community tank where I would place my culls, & a few tanks for quarantine, &a few for maternity/nursery wards for any fish that I bred or that gave birth to in a community tank as I kept mostly livebearers, plecos, gouramis, tetras, & obsessed w/ snails especially mystery snails, & neocardina shrimp. My shrimp & fish culls that people I knew over the internet or family that didnt want them I would put in my community tank or offer to donate to schools, moms that home school, etc free of charge for educational purposes. Ok yes Im a nerd but what animal lover, especially aquarium enthusiast isnt I was buying selling & trading w/ a few fish, shrimp, snail & aquascaping nuts like myself. Everything was very small scale.
    I have been in the aquarium hobby since I was 4 & got my first goldfish at a fair. At 5 I got a trio of guppies I bought at a flea market & bred my first female about two months later & raised the fry & started to learn about culling. At 6 I started aquascaping (before it was a big business, competitive industry & hobby- I just always had an eye for design but my aquascapes were always based partly on research on the natural habitats of what I was keeping & my twist their natural environment) & boy did I learn patience & do things the hard way. I began starting my hardscapes by riding my bike all around my neighborhood w/ a highflyer wagon rigged to the step bars on the back & would go to different houses that had pretty pebble driveways or stones around their garden & things like that & as if I could do any kind of chore for a few stones, searching for floating wood in the reservior a few houses down, or picking out sticks in the yard & stripping the bark off of branches w/ a tiny swiss army pocket knife w/ a tiny blade that my grandfather & best friend at the time gave me before he passed away the day before my birthday a few years later. He taught me to work for my money as he raised hunting dogs & sold them trained * my grandmother raised little show poodles & even in the 90,s getting 1.50$/wk chore money for a lot of chores because my mother had two babies 19 months apart at the time didnt buy you even the cheapest aquatic plants or driftwood or aquascaping stones. I started the hard way w/ each one of my tanks- .I would ask my dad to order me aqua magic grass seeds at the time that were $.50 packets out of an old ad in a tropical fish catalogue instead of give me the chore money when I was starting a new tank because I always had to pay for anything I wanted Or I would buy what I needed- bare basics- tanks at yard sales, filters, any of my many "businesses" I had. At 4 it was selling lemonade during the summer almost 6 days a week for hours on end &hot chocolate-cofee when I got older & could afford the over head- during the winter. My business came & went as I got older & so did my aquariums, paludariums, terrariums, ecospheres (which I am still trying to perfect to this day but w/ much better live stock than just brine/fairy shrimp or a snail or something like that.) But I have always been drawn to three things my whole life. The 1st- the water & the world w/in it- Im an Aquarius & as I always say "water runs through my veins & gives me life like it passes through a fishes gills. The 2nd- my incredible love for ALL animals
    Every week I was coming up w/ some new self contained water world experiment & failing a lot of the time because I never had grass seeds to spare on experiments & what we now call jarariums. From reading books & my favorite magazine national geographic & an old tropical fish magazine I found i was missing plants. So I went to the worlds leading expert to get help...my grandmother & grandfather...haha...
    My grandmother & grandfather were commercial farmers & I went their every summer & spend half the summer at the farm house & half at the lake house. I never really had money to buy many aquatic plants when I was younger so my grandparents both w/ green thumbs & knew every species of plant you could imagine, especially my grandmother w/ flowers & aesthetic plants-she even cross bred Clemson Day Lillies for my grandfather by cross breeding & selective breeding over several years using the plants that had flowers she could use to create a solid Clemson purple on the inside & orange on the outside towards the tips of the petals, which is how I learned about selective breeding regardless of what you were breeding the principal was the same- & my grandfather w/ produce grain, tobacco. My grandmothers day lilies, & about 140 other species of flowers/ plants still make the farm house garden look like a rainbow in spring/summer. It took me years to get a small spec of that green thumb from my grandmother & it wasnt until after she past away. She would show me what plants liked the water & what plants I could use from the garden, forest, or & in general & eventually get them to survive & propagate under water. This woman inspired me to be the aquarium hobbyist, aquascaper, aquatic & flowering plant propogater, & DIY queen I am today. They both made me want to give back & every time I made money I would put some aside for savings, some for charity of some sort-usually SPCA- & some for aquarium supplies, new fish, & materials to make the plants I had available to me in the mid 90's to even now work underwater. I continued to rescue animals & even take friends gold fish or betta or even a minnow someone didnt want even when I was young because I always wanted to adopt an animal instead of buy one. I always wondered why there were never any aquarium rescues for aquatic creatures that for whatever reason, people could no longer take care of & wondered where they went & what happened to them when seeing all the used fish tanks & equiptment for sale at yard sales & now online.
    ***About 4 years ago I got back into a stable life & environment where I had the time to take care of a community tank. a few livebearer & tetra breeding tanks & a few colonies of neocardina. When I decided I wanted aquariums again & that I could handle the commitment at about 24 I decided to post an ad on craigslist & a few other places letting people know if they didnt want their fish, if it was sick, injured, or life changes stood in the way of being able to care for them that I would take them as I got a steal on a very large tank & didnt have anything to put in it. Obviously I had to be smart & responsible about it so I couldnt take saltwater because my tank & aquascape was setup freshwater, & I couldnt take huge fish or fish that would get even bigger, & at the time I had planned on the few that were brought to me as just being personal pets, so I coudldnt take fish I knew I couldnt make the commitment to keep for the entirety of an extremely long lifespan as I didnt know where I would be in 10 years.
    ~THE IMPORTANT PART~ I live on a country island about 40 mins from the main city of Charleston, SC. I live down a dead end dirt road w/ over 100 acres of forrest on the opposite side of the road & the yard my home is on is on the water of a main water way to the ocean the Stono river(about a 10-15 minute boat ride to the ocean & 45 mins to get past the jetties by boat. I do not have a lot of friends as taking in fish & working a 9-12 hour a day job 5-6 days a week. As time went on my name was getting around town & I was getting about 5 fish in a week. I was buying more tanks & my boyfriend wasnt thrilled so i decided I would form a privately (actually still 99.9% personally) funded nonprofit rescue & care for these fish until I could find them forever homes & unofficially Lowcountry Aquatics Rescue was born. I never minded paying for their care until rehomed & I had a volunteer who kept some but i did all the maintenance & care. In June of last year I was diagnosed w/ an inoperable tumor in my spinal cord at the base of my neck & At this point i probably had on average 150 fish to care for. Then i had to start direct cell steroid injections & radiation therapy & had to quit my job that was funding the rescue. I quickly blew through my savings & the state doesnt pay jack. Credit card debt started to pile up so I knew I had to give up my art studio on our property & make it a fish rescue/sanctuary. I have tried to make social media accounts for the rescue trying to find funding/ sponsors/ donations/VOLUNTEERS. I am the only aquatic rescue that i know of from lots of research in over 400+mi. I have no help, $ the only money I have to support the rescue now is by selling my breeding simple shrimp & fish offspring. Any info on how to get a colony of shrimp to grow fast? They are expensive to purchase & i could only get about 10 of a few Sakhura & 6 Emerald Blues. We have a huge aquarium community here but I havent gained their trust yet I guess, but I have over 200 rescues & I will be devastated if i have to shut down. I know having some fancy shrimp locally would make the rescue a few extra dollars & having a few more rare but easy care fish to breed would help. I quarantine for 60 days & have nets for every tank. Everything gets sanitized for ea. tank weekly- nets, fake plants, etc, & A couple brought in some livebearers with a huge 6" molly that was super pregnant. They made it through quarantine with no signs of stress or physical issues but long story short those 16 fish they brought in had ick. EVERY TANK HAS ICK & I lost many breeding fish & shrimp from bumping heat..IM AT A LOSS. HELP

    I had about 20 shrimp in a 20 long and they all died very quickly, within a month, I kept up on water changes and everything, I dechlorinated the water and had the tank set up and everything, what could have caused this?

      Maybe your face OHHHHHH!! lol It really could be any reason without going into tons of details , first one is normally the tank not being cycled enough ,second is water changes not being done properly and 3 is probably overfeeding ..we all do these thing in the beginning.

    Hiya Mark , Will shrimp breed if there are fish in the tank? I have 9 neons and 6 glowlight tetras in my 210L and i want to buy some RCS and was just wondering :)

      I have seen it happen but I wouldn't recommend it, noens and tetras are pretty aggressive towards shrimp

      Ok cheers Mark - It looks like i'll have to remove the guppys from my 60L , hopefully my eldest son still wants them :)

      sniperwipers I can second that. Ended up starting a shrimp tank purely because my glowlights harassed and killed my cherry shrimp. The rescue mission took about an hour haha
