Gavin Harrison: "I don't consider myself a 'double base player.'"
Also Gavin Harrison: *Plays this insane double base shit.*
His idea of "slow it down" is a bit different than mine.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hilariously true
Hey, he did ask him to play it "a little bit slower", so he obliged xD
Facts 😂
So this is the classic Martin Lopez ride/snare figure (ex Opeth drummer) on top of the Thomas Haake “Bleed” beat.
What an absolute madman! I can play both beats, but combining them AND coming in at that weird time is fucked.
Reason #12048942 that Gavin is my favorite drummer in earth.
This is why Gavin is one of my favorite drummers. Uses a herta under a 6/8 ride pattern.
And shifting it by 1/16 which is impressive
Been following Gavin since I was a teenager, and even though i'm a "metal drummer" I really do appreciate his sense of meter and phrasing. He's the man, man!
Well being a metal drummer is a much bigger umbrella term now so I proudly say I am.
+Anirudh Drums Categorizing yourself as a musician just Limits your creativity
@@thedrumguy2350 lol what?
C'mon man
"Give it a try..." yeah right
You just have to bulid the muscle memory of herta groove with your feet and I will assume you already know how to play 6/8 beat with your hands it will take couple of days if you do it seriously take it from me I did the same and it worked hope this helps
Tip:Start slow and with a proper technique and don't rush speed will come later
xD
@@abdulalshibly3930 There's no way you can learn what he's doing from watching the video. Give me some sheet music and I can probably sight read it and play it straight away.
@@David-ud9ju if you're talking about the double bass just search in CZcams How to play meshugha double bass or how to play herta with your feet and there you can find out what to play and the hands you can play normal 6/8 and fancy it with your style you don't have to copy what he's doing hope this helps
😂😂
Did someone notice that 6/8 hand pattern is actually one of the most used grooves of Martin Lopez in Opeth?
It was his signature groove- a double paradiddle between the ride and snare.
Yeah I thought of that too! I think anyone who has tried to learn an Opeth song noticed it.
yes
Baying of the Hounds mid section and Moon Above, Sun Below; almost the same rhythm.
I've always liked that Martin Lopez ride pattern😁
*I'm a simple man, I see the name Gavin Harrison, I press LIKE!* :D
One of my favorite drummer,
thx for sharing this.
This drumkit is beautiful !!
This grooves he just comes up with are incredible.
Yeah, sure! I'll give it a try!
tururut tu tururut tu tururut tu
tin titintin titi(tá) tintin tin titintin titi(tá) tintin
ua uh uh uhtá, ua uh uh uhtá
2:29 - Oh gee, thank you Gavin. That was A LOT slower to break it down. 🤔😆
Legendary. One of my favorite songs
OMG, I love his voice, as much as his drumming!
Huge sounds from a small snare. Gavin kills!
oh my god that snare sound melts my ears. So goood
Salute for creativity
This is exactly why he IS my favorite drummer ..
That's very cool Gavin! Awesome dude. Also Drumeo love you guys, keep groovin', 🎶🥁😎DC
Simply amazing groove! No wonder he plays in the bands he does x') \m/
Even thinking about giving this a try, I become a jibbering mess. Gavin, you're simply brilliant.
There is a reason you are amazing
No one understands this better than you
Thomas Lang
U r fkn moster! I love u bro. Big respekt and hug ❤
BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED HELL YEAH
TRRTATRRTATRRATRRATRRTA
I thought of this watching you play the Afro/Cuban beat demonstrating the Herta. I learned this 50 yrs. ago from Allan Dawson. Its just a double paradiddle starting with right hand. The right stays on the bell of the cymbal and left goes back and forth between the rim of the snare and the small tom. Its a nein ego beat [ sp. ] and I usually play left foot clave with it. 21 st. Centuary Schitzoid Man, has got to be close to 50 yrs, old. Gavin, your one of the nice guys in this buisness, so I hope you don't mind me sharing a lick. Thanks very much from a 71 yr. old Gavin Harrison fan.
Sounds awesome!
Very nice sounds!
This dudes a beast
Legend!
"...in a song called 21st Century Schizoid Man" ----> no reactions from the guy.
Hah, seriously. There should have been a little "aah" in there by him
Tomsa Haake and Gavin Harrison, both bad ass drummers!
Excellent
Vicious!
Love hertas
I've just had a great laugh, I slowed it down to 0.5 and it sounded like a pair of drunks trying to teach a drum pattern. Slowing it down does make it easier, but also hilarious.
try it .
Skell Bones 😂😂😂
Especially the part where Gavin goes "bla bla bla bla bla bla bla" XDDD you made my evening, thanks!
Thank you for blessing us with this comment
Peak comedy my man!
😎👍GAVIN!!!
I would bet most of us can do this with time. The hands part is no problem - just a matter of doing it so much to be muscle memory. Then the feet. Again, not a problem but it must become a natural pattern. Then slowly putting it together. Maybe the first 2 beats - the double paradiddle leading into the snare back beat. I think it's worth getting down because it's wicked!
He is a god
Genius level technique. Who knew Porcupine Tree’s drummer was this good? This is drumming at a whole ‘nother level
Pretty much everyone who's into Porcupine Tree knows how immense Gav is. :-)
Pretty much everyone... I showed my friend PT and he already knew them because Tim Yeung showed him PT when my friend was Dino’s guitar tech in Divine Heresy. Most drummers even death metal drummers are into PT because of the drums
Pre In Absentia (pre 2001) PT drummer Chris Maitland had amazing , more rock oriented grooves.
Gavin is a more “metal” oriented drummer (in PT that is at least).
Both drummers excel at their techniques
I knew as soon as I listened to Porcupine. I was like 'damn that's some drumming'. Porcupine's previous drummer was really good to - but way more focused on the hi hat. If you pay attention in The Rest Will Flow or Even Less he excels and shines beautifully.
Well you obviously haven't listened to enough PT...
Thougt myself a more strait forward herta on the kick, took the notes from the Band "Meshuggah" and their song "Bleed" ... that was hard enough! See this pattern moved by a 16-note and played under some poly-rythmic ... i'm lost now :D :D
freak this kid's so clean
I will try that
Pushing the boundary on what his humanly possible bonkers stuff. 😳
Mmmm not really!
Hero of the Half Truth!
Hes more talented then ill ever have a hope in being haha
That snare drum has no business sounding that good
When Gavin practices, the metronome follows HIM :D
Gavin appear on vídeo, I hit like to praise the Lord. Thats simple
For those not quite understanding what GH was playing with his feet.... Think of it this way.
First learn to play triplets on your double pedals, being: LRR... then once this is mastered put a left foot between the RR part of the LRR pattern.
Maybe you could think of it like this: L R and R , L R and R, etc.... (the and being the extra left foot) .
The so called "Afro-Cuban" pattern being played between the ride cymbal and the snare drum is very similar to a Double Paradiddle, but instead of being RLRLRR-LRLRLL the sticking is: RLRLRR-LRLRLR..
Happy Drumming.... Chris Brien..
Jezen Thomas thank you for your reply... I do understand the difference between Semi-Demi Quavers (1/32 notes) and Semi-Demi Quaver Triplets (1/16th Note Triplets). Whether they be in groups of 3, 5, 7 etc... If you read what I wrote and understand what an "African Six" pattern is you would have immediately understood that Gavin is playing a classic Afro-Cuban rhythm which can be interpreted as 4/4', 3/4, 6/8 & 12/8..
Gavin mentions that this pattern is his cue for exiting his solo of which he hasn't mentioned that it is an "African Six" pattern but maybe he did in another part of the interview.
Nice to discuss drumming concepts with you.... All the best, Chris Brien.
Bleed
For more information on the herta, please consult Tomas Haake and Meshuggah's Bleed
John Vincent if you read the linear notes on future breed machine which is messhuggah 2nd album Tomas states vinnie colautia dave weckel Alan holdsworth as his influences the guy know his drums check his Vic Firth days videos out you'll see
Hey guys I’m a big fan of this channel but I just want to know I’m new and drumsAnd I wanted to get an affordable drum kit and I always keep getting recommended the PDP concept Maple and the Yamaha stage custom but I don’t know which one to choose I want to really boomy Kick drum and a really pronounced and punchy snare could you guys give me some advice please
Once the Duallist D4 pedal becomes more prevalent, we'll look at these grooves as oldies but goodies. I currently use 2, D4 Kick Pedals. One for each bass drum. Don't judge me till you've tried it.
YouAllJackasses - you are part of the same narrow minded fools that gear any progress or technology. Next you'll be saying it was invented by the devil. Don't be afraid of new technology, embraces it and learn from, then move to a higher place. My uncle was the great Cozy Powell that was the first to use the Ludwig Speed King Pedal design, it was much quicker and much more powerful due to the gear ratios. Was that cheating too. Where do you draw your line. If I have a shitty, no frills pedal can I play as good as someone with a $500 pedal? This design will soon be the only pedal being sold and the possibilities will bring drumming to a new level. I've been playing for 30 years and inspiration to create new grooves gets old. These pedals opened an entire new dimension in the "art of drumming". There are no boundaries when it comes to creation.
YouAllJackasses YES. DUMBASS. If I could learn to play with four sticks I would. Isn't that what art is. Learning to use innovation, to invent new paths to push us forward and further. That is called technique through technology. Do new drum sticks made of graphite scare you too. Do V- DRUMS make you run and hide behind mommy's skirt? Embrace technology and innovative thinking, that's why you have a iPhone and are able to chat with me on YOU TUBE. Is learning from the Internet cheating? You are a fool. Nothing more and probably spinning your wheels, going nowhere fast. DA
YouAllJackasses Try the Duallist D4 pedal with open and closed hi hats combinations. The possibilities with compound beats from the bass drum with open and closed hi hats, is insane. The grooves created are no match to any other I've ever heard except from a drum computerized tracks. Again, new and improved grooves. Try it, you"ll like it. And if you do as I did, you can still use tradition double bass and quadruple double bass, or just one double bass with one foot with the hi hat.
You should get Eric Harland on the show! :D :D :D
The 13 people who dislike this video probably suck at playing drums. How can you dislike something like this?
Who in their right minds dislikes this?
It's a little busy.
I'll give that a try... in my next life.
Why hasnt tomas haake been featured here yet?
Elijah Williams Because this guy just Beat him. haha.. No, I’d love to see Haake as well
Yeah he should come on the show. He's got good ideas to share for sure.
Nirudh Drums like what? Beat the fuck out of the drums like a 12 year old and rape the double bass? Get tf outta here with that amateur bullshit. At least Gavin has Good Technique.
John vincent you clearly haven’t watched a single Haake video outside his playing for Meshuggah... the man’s technique is unbelievable and draws from a bunch of different genres besides metal.
Benmusic21 he sucks, get over it.
someone knows witch kind of doubel pedal is this ones? and witch ones Gavin usually use?
thx to Gavin Harrison for his pedagogy.
patience....playing like a goof to master it...it s the key...and the differnce between stay regular or became a master. Some licks are so great that I ve tried to toke them to the master level some other honestly I didn´t
ez stuff
It sounds like Meshuggah Bleed!!!
His rhythm around 1:00 is like hot for teacher
sheeeeeeeeeeeeet
I don't know why but not being able to hear Gavin count at 1:12 was funny to me. Just watch that part again it's hilarious...
im gonna go play my guitar.
I’d never even heard of Gavin Harrison much less Porcupine Tree. He’s awesome and so was PT! I wish these types of videos were around when I was a kid and just started playing drums. I would’ve kicked ass! Back in the day you either had to have an excellent teacher, which was hard to find, or spend thousands of dollars on instructional videos. Most of those kinda videos sucked because the drummers very rarely broke thing down and if it wasn’t that great of a video (Bobby Rock) you were out $60-$80 per video cassette. Now there’s thousands of great instructional content online that there’s no reason for being a shitty drummer unless you flat out suck.
He plays primarily for Porcupine Tree (Steven Wilson) & The Pineapple Thief, and he's done a lot of extra for Steven Wilson; they're probably best friends.
Kids today will never understand!
$40 for that 40min long instructional video on VHS (that you watched every day after school for a few months…)
@@jamessbca lololol exactly! And never really got a lot out of.

Double base ferda groove
People say Bleed is awsome, it's soooooooo hard and shit. I mean they must have never heard of Gavin Harrison. He is doing the same feet herta bass drum groove here and that too with more complexity along with the afro cuban independence on the hands. Now this is a challenge.
Where does he play this in Way Out of Here? I know the song decently well but I can't really hear it anywhere lol
czcams.com/video/Uuj9XjwArAk/video.html
Very cool , but hard !
Thx to Tomas Haake for this Herta double kick groove...
Hot for teacher is shuffle based kick groove, after working with it in the VH song ''I'm the one''...Haake took the herta groove somewhere else by using it full fledged forward, then inverting it, breaking it in parts and frames, ect and made it popular to the masses....czcams.com/video/bAJ1WTGNISk/video.html
What the heck, I have a hard enough time playing the freaking herta part of The Woven Web
Reminds me of Chris Adler, Love it!!!
fuck off with your shitty ass edgelord music. Go to hell. Gavin Harrison isn't that great but he's miles ahead of the idiot you mentioned.
Foot pattern:
L rLr L rLr
1 2n3 4 5n6
Snare falls on beat 4
RH naningo nanigo(?) forgot its spelling
Thank you. That looks so much simpler
Derrick Seidel
Your welcome
You can also think of it like this:
LRRLRR
123456
with the left foot inbetween the two rights...
L RLR L RLR
either way same thing although perhaps that made it confusing
Basically the framework of the feet is again
LRRLRR with the additional left inbetween the two rights
L RLR L RLR
or again
L rLr L rLr
Beat 4 in 6/8?
Drew Trotter
6/8 counted 123456
Beat 4 is the back beat
1 2n3 4 5n6
Beat 4 yes
drumtwo4seven
Да, только начинает он с правой.

Tomas Haake - The Djentleman approves
Is this what Gavin plays on Anesthetize's heavy part? The 4/4 heavy part, not the 5/8-6/8-4/4 part
Patrick Staak thats exactly what i thought, have to go back and listen now. Possibly the sickest isolated beat ive ever heard right here. Gavin is just flawless
Yeah, that's pretty much it, except the hands are just doing a 2/3 poly, not the afrocuban RLRLRRLRLRLR thing
Im wondering whether the Herta on the bass drum is shifted a sixteenth forward in Anesthetize aswell. By just trying to hear it, I can't understand
Yeah they are, the fast part of the herta always comes just after the snare, which is on the beat.
Confessor - Condemned
I see, Gavin Harrison just plays Meshuggah's Bleed for fun.
Bass sounds like hot for teacher
sigh ...
Thats because its the same pattern
Bleed 2.0
Also played by Mangini in the 90's & of course the greatest metal song of all time, Bleed by MESHUGGAH.
I tried this pattern on my double pedal and afterwards, my calves really herta lot 😂
why i am hearing the BLEED notes on legs?? is it normal?
Because it’s the same
1:02 bleed
1:01 - come on man... It's just not fair.
Next lesson for human race?🤣🙏🏻please...!!

Doesn't King Crimson have 4 drummers now? How many drummers do you need lol.
Amateur... just kidding. My favorite drummer.
The man is a robot.... Don't fall for the explanation, it's a cover.
