He had the most staggering photographic memory, even rehearsing from memory, with rehearsal letters all perfectly known! Liszt "Faust" Symphony sounds amazing in his hands!
How wonderfully Mitropoulos communicated with his hands --and without the baton! And the fine playing of the NY viola section shows the firmly embedded influences of Primrose and Tertis. Wonderful!
Always wanted to see a video of Mitropolous in rehearsal. What a treat to see evidence of his photographic memory- calling out rehearsal numbers without hte score...and no baton. The music was definitely in him. Incredible! They don't make 'em like that aymore.

I agree that Mitropoulis was one of the truly great conductors. Here he impressively conducts without a score (he was said to have had a photographic memory). His shortness of breath is evidence of his declining health condition. He was a heavy smoker (as was Bernstein), so they no doubt often enjoyed a cigarette together (perhaps after, as Bernstein silently plotted against him).

I have only heard him conduct Mahler's 6th and 10th as a part of Mahler Broadcasts with NY Philh. I was surprised because I did not know what to expect and there they were - one of the greatest performances of Mahler! Then I tried my favorite - Shostakovich. It was Shosta's 10th, one of my favorite symphonies, and I was amazed once again. The best western Shostakovich conductors are Mitropoulos and Ormandy (whose Shosta's 4th I regard as one of the greatest). Great performance!

Very dry performance space. I like Mitropoulos version of the Tchaikovsky 6th symphony the best. He had a way of introducing the lovely bittersweet theme like no other conductor. The strings would slowly run up the scale, pause, and play it. No other conductor has done that.
In one day of grueling work Mitropoulos and the NYP pumped out 3 symphonies, 4 overtures and one dance suite. Columbia Records really short-changed Mitropoulous --and us, by making him gind out catalog-fillers. Yes, I know he smoked too much, and when he died 2 NOV 60 of a heart attack his doctors probably had warned him, but this doesn't excuse Columbia Records and their treatment of him.

I'm trying to imagine how this was edited. Music continues while jumping from all the different camera angles. Then, it totally switches scene from a rehearsal to concert. This must have been extremely difficult and the person doing the film splicing had to really know this tough music. Also, there must have been a shortage of male harpists. I bet the female harpist had an interesting story what it was like back then.
