  • This video will help you safely remove and then install an individual key on a HP Chromebook 14 series computer. Since this computer uses a French Inset keyboard, it is preferable to replace keys if at all possible instead of the whole keyboard as the new keyboard cannot properly be held in place.

    FAQ's:
    Q: My Key Cap will not click down in place correctly. What's wrong?
    A: If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.
    Q: Where can I purchase replacement keys?
    A: I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.laptopkeys.... If you cannot find the correct key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key off of there.
    Q: I have a Key or Keys that are not working. Will this fix them?
    A: This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as seen here; • How To Fix Troubleshoo... .
    Q: The hinge clip came apart into two pieces. How can I reassemble?
    A: They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.
    Q: The rubber spring came off. How do I reattach it?
    A: There isn't really a good way to reattach those. They are not meant to be replaced. Best advice is try to use a small amount of glue. If that does not work, you may have to replace the keyboard.

      If the Key Cap is not snapping back into place, there are usually two reasons. Either the Retainer Clip is not snapped properly into place itself, or it is damaged and cannot securely hold the Key Cap in place. To compare, remove another Key Cap and compare the two Retainer Clips.

    I have a keyboard similar to this one on my HP Chromebook 14 X360. Putting the two white retainer frames back together was challenging. The hinge in the middle where the two white plastic frames meet was not connecting. The pins were not locking into the grooves because a thin piece of plastic was bent into the groove and blocking the pins from fully seating down. I bent the plastic out of the groove and the pins were able to lock into place. I'm glad its over, it was stressing me out, haha.

    • @PC_Monkey
      @PC_Monkey  Před 3 lety

      If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

      I have never tried to buy them in that much bulk before so I'm not sure. Most computer models have keys that are not compatible with other models so its most likely not worth it. Unless you have dozens of the exact same model computer.

      All 3 components are white lol. The top part, I call the Key Cap. Then there is the inner part called the Hinge or Clip. Then the Rubber Spring. They usually are not found for sale separately however. You may need to purchase a whole key assembly or a keyboard if you cant find the key.

    I tried this and it didn't work. My HP chromebook was only 11 months old. I also tried removing the keyboard and reattaching the ribbon but that didn't work. I called for a warranty repair. But the HP person on the phone told me to press down the power button and the refresh key for 15 seconds. I did that, but I had powerwashed and needed to put in the WiFi code. Since the keys hadn't been working we just skipped to where he would send a box to send it back. I thought I should try to get it ready so I put in the WiFi password. Lo and behold - ALL the keys worked properly, except the g key. I have to really press down on it. I messed it up when I removed it. So first try the power button and the refresh key.
