  • If you have a key or keys on your Dell keypad that are not physically behaving the way they should, you may want to disassemble them, inspect for damage, and if no damage is found, reassemble correctly. If they are damaged, you would most likely need to replace them. Here you can see how to do that all safely and correctly! If your key is phically fine but still not working, try troubleshooting it as seen here: • How To Fix Troubleshoo... . Check out the FAQ's and Related Video Links below !!

    FAQ's:
    Q: Where can I purchase replacement keys?
    A: If the key assembly is not installing correctly, its either due to a component being damaged and needing to be replaced or a component not being orientated correctly. I would disassemble the key as seen here in this video and inspect for damage. If there is no damage, install the key. If there is damage, replace the key. Would you like help locating a key? If so, what is the brand and model for your computer?
    Q: My Key Cap will not click down in place correctly. What's wrong?

    Q: The Hinge Clips came off with the Key Cap. What do I do?
    A: Because they key can usually not be reinstalled with the Retainer Clip and the Key Cap still attached to each other, you would have to separate them as seen here, using a small flat pry tool.

    Not too long ago my W key wouldn’t sit in place, the key cap is kinda stuck to the back of the actual key and I’m too scared to remove it because I might break it if I try to put it back in place it will stay but if I press the key too much it comes out, any advice?

      If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

    Nice vid - I had a problem with keys not registering when pressed, on a laptop I hadn’t used in a while - a real easy fix was to press and hold the key down , and gently twist the tip of a screwdriver in the cracks around the key’s edges - the friction was enough to clean the contacts, without disassembling the key - it’s a good first step to get problem keys working again!

    I'm super happy with how thorough this is, usually I have to find like 5 different tutorials before I find my issue, but this had everything in one video! My little rubber piece came off and I was worried if gluing it would ruin it, but it seems it should be fine (hopefully gorilla glue works), if not I'll take it to a tech shop but thank you for the helpful tutorial :) (I'm hoping I can also glue my key back together since it came off by breaking in half by being used too much)

I have to press the bare spring cap hard too to get the key to register a press.The nerd in me would love to figure this out but I think this might be a list cause. Do you have any ideas?

      I'm sorry if I wasn't clear: there's no issues pressing it. Both with and without the cap on, the rubber covered spring goes down normally. What is odd is that they character doesn't register/display unless I get a little aggressive with the pressure. It can work but only with elbow grease. I can't see anything obvious with the pressure, I think there's an issue with contact at the base inside the mechanism but I don't know enough to figure out what exactly, or if there's anything that can be done. With the cap on it feels just like the other buttons.

      One thing worth noting: this is an "e" key , and before cleaning the keyboard yesterday the "7" and "c" were also not very responsive. But cleaning those two mostly fixed the issues. The "e" is being stubborn. Is there some common circuit they share? The "d", however, is completely fine.

      @PC_Monkey  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Because they key can usually not be reinstalled with the Retainer Clip and the Key Cap still attached to each other, you would have to separate them as seen here, using a small flat pry tool.

      I have the same issue, the retainer clip is stuck to the key and i cannot get it off. Maybe it is glued. I called Dell and they want to replace the entire keyboard. I said "No way". I am thinking to glue the key to the rubber in the middle. It is the "Alt" key, I do not need to use it again in case it does not work.

    My W key has come loose WITH the clip still attached to it. I’ve been able to carefully remove the clip (so they’re two separate pieces) and follow the rest of the steps in this video. But then the W key falls off again after a little wiggling WITH the hinge attached again. My problem is that the hinge won’t stay connected to the actual laptop. Do you have a fix for this?

    • @PC_Monkey
      @PC_Monkey  Před rokem +1

      If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

      @PC_Monkey  Před 7 měsíci

      Any plastic or craft glue you have would be ok to try although that is not considered a good solution as glue may stop the hinge clip and / or the rubber spring from working correctly. If at all possible, you would avoid glue and replace the key assembly.

    Hey, Jamin. In 2021, I experienced this problem with my dell computer, that is, certain keys (b, f, m, and n) weren't working on my keyboard. So, I took it to a computer repair shop, and they suggested I replace the entire keyboard, but instead, he sold me a separate, independent keyboard that plugs into my computer.

    • @PC_Monkey
      @PC_Monkey  Před rokem

      Yes, an external keyboard is a good idea when troubleshooting why a keyboard is not working. Did you ever manage to get your keys to work properly? If not, do the keys feel like they are physically fine or do they feel like they have something mechanically wrong with them?

      @@PC_Monkey I don't know because the computer repair guy only told me that my keyboard needed to be replaced or I had to use an external one. Nevertheless, I paid for the external keyboard that he sold me inside the shop. It is still working today. However, had I watched your video prior to 2021, I probably would not have needed to take it to the repair shop. Might I add, your videos are very helpful in guiding people in repairing their computers themselves.
