    I didn't know whether to laugh or cry watching the video. After hours of viewing other CZcams videos and doing other google searches on the same issue, you saved me. I already have the passport drive at home, but never thought to use it for "transferring" some of the old programs I have and want to continue to use. Thanks so much John for all the information, it you made my day! 🙂

    As a retired Sr. Software Engineer who’s designed Microsoft Windows programs since Windows Version 2.0, I can assure everyone watching this video that this technique will only work for programs that install ALL their components in the application subdirectory in the Programs directory, and don’t rely on any Registry Keys, COM DLL’s, or Services that get installed with the software. There are many programs that fall into this category, however, in today’s world of software, most programs are written that use Registered DLL’s that get installed in a Windows System directory. If these aren’t copied or copied and not registered, the program can’t work. It certainly doesn’t hurt to try, but don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work.

      I'm moving win 10 to a new win 10 computer with all new hardware. I'm building it myself. I have a cloned M2 drive of my old system. I wanted to just boot to it but, I'm thinking it won't work due to drivers and the registry file and or other files. Yes/No?
      New Topic:
      Everytime I tried to run an old program from say from win 7. I would use the properties / compatibility tab and tell it to run as win 7. It never works. From NT to 7 to 10. Do you know why? Thanks!

I've been months searching for help, then having to walk away for my sanity - a week later, I'd try again - over and over. I think you're lucky that worked..count your blessings. As a rule it is not advisable to only transfer Program Files (x86) program folders to a new location as a software program installation scatters other critical files in other locations such as your appData folder and registry settings.

    Loved this video, I watched it until the end for the entertainment value...and laughed through much of it...even though I was pretty sure it would not help me with my computer problems. And I subscribed. Copying files from an old computer to a new computer is no big deal, there are several ways to do it. The issue is getting old legacy programs installed on a new version of Windows. Copying program files doesn't install them. I am still not sure how you were able to get your programs to work on Win10 just by copying them over from your external backup drive. Sounds like a miracle to me. Four years later from when you made this video, I am trying to migrate programs from an old PC running Win10 to a new PC running Win11. I tried cloning my old HDD onto a new SSD to use as a boot drive in the new PC, but this doesn't work. But I do have all my old files in my new PC now from doing this. Microsoft makes it impossible to transfer installed programs from an old PC on an older OS system onto a new PC running a newer OS. This is intentional, it is called forced obsolescence...to force you to buy new subscriptions to all the programs you already paid for once. It is frustrating, to say the least.

    Thanks but a little confusing. I would have liked visuals. I bought PC Mover which didn't work and was considering Zinstall. My issue is that the brilliant people at Dell now make computers with very small SSD C drives and large D hard drives. Problem is, everything on my old computer is on the C drive, so PC Mover can't switch drives and after 8 hours of transfer, tells me the C drive is too small, duh! I have the same portable hard drive ou have, which has worked great for me over the years, so I'll review this again and see if I can follow.

    @williamdavis716 Před 3 lety +6

    Glad that worked for you, HOWEVER, your method does not take into consideration any modifications to the System Registry that most Windows applications make during the installation process. Simply copying the program folders will, in most cases, not be enough to get your application to work properly. Good luck to all struggling with this issue.

    • @12thDecember
      @12thDecember Před 3 lety

      That occurred to me, too, but I'm going to attempt to install whatever programs I can from either a disk or via online, because I'm pretty good at recordkeeping when it comes to license numbers and such and have only installed each program once. As a last resort I'll cross my fingers and use my external HD which happens to already have the 86x folder on it.
      I agree with John that transfer programs are cr@p. All you need to do is read the customer reviews for any of them and you know there's got to be a better way. I also hate Windows 10 with the fire of a thousand burning suns, but I'm stuck with using a PC because my job software does not run on a Mac and I'm not tech savvy enough to use Linux.

My Windows 8 just isn’t cutting it anymore. To run an updated program I need Windows 8.1. Why? So anyway, thanks for the video. I don't kow if you are also using Passport, and I have no way to know the capacity of your external hard drive, but I do know that when you pulg it into your old computer (Windows7) it should show up. Your computer should give you an audio signal that the device is logged in. Then, to verify, you should go to "My Computer" and it will show you all of the devices, including your hard drive C. @@jtylermusic I just got it to show up, here is what i did, maybe will help someone else.
      On my old computer, i started by opening the Documents And Settings folder,
      Double-click the "SendTo" folder to open it.
      (If you don’t see the SendTo folder, you’ll need to choose to display hidden files and folders.
      Click View | Folder Options |View tab.
      Under Advanced Settings, select Show Hidden Files And Folders.
      Click OK.
      )
      Then I right-clicked somewhere in the empty space of the SendTo folder.
      Choose New | Shortcut.
      Complete the Create Shortcut wizard to point to a new location, (which was my external hard drive) and when i was done, it will appear as a destination in my Send To menu.

    Thanks for your informative video. I tried the method yesterday from my 10+ yr old Dell Dimension and also from a 5 yr old Lenovo laptop to a new Dell desktop, using a new sea gate usb drive. I was trying to move Microsoft office 16, but it did not work on the new Dell. Files transferred fine but I can’t start the software on my new computer. 😢 I am left to continue searching for my actual purchased discs; I have them somewhere and hopefully they’ll still work.

      Loraine: I have found that MS Office seems to have hidden the KEY to unlock it. You may have to call Microsoft and tell them that you need the key...if you purchased MS Office...especially MS Office 365. JT

    another option is put the old hard drive in the new PC on a diff drive name like F or something. Then u can transfer files from 1 drive to the other using SATA cables.
    Handy to keep the old hard drive in the PC to use to make backups and system images on but it would need to be win 10 as well.
    I havnt worked out how to transfer from 1 drive to the other yet as im still working on it. but it can be done that way according to tech guys ive spoken too.
    In my case old hard drive that used to be win 7 in an acer x3400 but it updated to win 10. But rebuilt my PC and only have the old hard drive and DVD rom left from it everything else has been replaced including a new case. New hard drive with a clean install of windows 10. So now im trying to workout how to get my games and files from 1 hard drive to the other. Copy and paste doesnt seem to work like others have suggested doing.

    Just a thought Tyler
    The program files folder X86 is a place where the (older) Windows 32bit programs are stored. They go there instead of getting mixed up with the 64 bit stuff in windows 10, 64 bit versions. 32bit should run in a 64 bit operating system.
    I'm just trying your method by transferring a 32 bit program from windows XP into a blank reformatted external drive. Then I will transfer it to the X86 program file in a new windows 10 laptop.
    I hope it works

      Well, I could open the program in the external drive no problems. But, unfortunately, even after transferring it to the new laptop X86 (32 bit) folder, it wouldnt open. Showing files missing. So I found the original installation disc and stuck it in the disk drive. Guess what? It opened in a 64bit version grrrr. Then I read some paperwork that stated the program could only be used from the pc hard drive or a flash drive in usb port. I think the original program could have been upset during transfer to the new computer. It was extremely slow. The old pc was ancient so was the external drive. The program I transferred is an industrial strength vehicle diagnostic with very complex infrastructure. I can only assume some dll files fell over due to the age of the kit, and trying to transfer from windows XP to the latest windows 10.
      In conclusion all I can say is JT's method is a great idea but might not always work depending on the age of the kit and the operating systems.

    This guy has mastered the art of talking for ~30 minutes what could be said easily in 5. On top of that he is full of it - never in 20+ years has "INSTALL in xxx" showed up when moving files like he describes. It doesnt re-install the program - its just a straight copy of the folder and Adobe, like most programs need files that are not in the program file to run.

However on my Libronix program I copied the x86 program on to my WD Ultra Passport but when I tried to open it on my new Windows 10 I got errors saying I am missing 4 different dll files. However when I look at the external drive and on my new Win 10 laptop the files are there...any suggestions.
