    7:59 Sadly, the actor playing the research scientist Aramu, Thapelo Maropefela, was killed in late 2021. He died of injuries sustained in an assault outside a nightclub, after he intervened to help his friend. RIP to this brave young man.

    One genuine improvement I think Chibnall brought to the show is _actually using the TARDIS_ as more than merely a way to establish the initial time and place of the stories. Until then, through the years, the Doctor and crew had barely ever used it to understand and solve problems during the story. It's refreshing that the stories acknowledge that being able to travel through time and space is useful for solving mysteries. That's something I hope the show remembers moving forward.

      I think they didn’t use it much in order for it not to become a fix-everything device. Excuse = don’t mess up time. But as a teleportation machine, yes I would welcome so more of that.

    This episode holds a special place in my heart as a Brazilian Whovian, because it's the first time a Brazilian is cast on Doctor Who: Gabriela Camera as Joana, the surviving vlogger. So I can't help but give it a little more leeway on the bad things!

    I love this episode. The Suki reveal hit hard for me because of how gutted The Doctor is when she find out. I'm also a fan of Yaz and this is one of the rare times she gets some spotlight. I'm confident she'd have a great run if she joins Big Finish because she's a great character that the show didn't do enough with, just like Nyssa.

    I don't get the hate for this episode. I really quite enjoy it. I like the globe hopping plot with a good pace and likeable cast. It's shot brilliantly with the usual great music. The messaging works and I love the deaths too. Great sleeper hit.

      @@leipherd8118 convenient plotting is a thing for a great swathe of fiction. This isn't in itself a problem , orphan 55 is not rubbish for convenient plotting. It is a mess of almost every proportion from costuming and set design to plotting and character work. Everyone has personal preference and it's cool if u like orphan 55 but I cannot share the love on that one

  • @WiccanRai

    It's only just now watching this review that I realised that Praxeus and Orphan 55 almost work as a two part story had Praxeus aired first. If you consider how, while the Praxeus problem
    was solved, the environmental one wasnt. I didn't mind Praxeus. It was okay, a decent watch, with compelling characters. RIP the forgotten scientist, Amaru 😕.

    @kateorgera5907 Před rokem +3

    I do wonder if Chibnall's style of not focusing on emotional repercussions only looks worse because RTD and Moffet DID focus on emotional repercussions. Like if someone was watching Chibnall era without watching any Doctor Who before this, or even having only watching the classics, maybe it doesn't stick out as much. Like, 13th Doctor was the first era my mom watched beginning to end, so while she had seen a bunch of episodes from previous eras that I showed her, 13 is really her doctor. And while she would get confused by some of the complicated plots, she didn't have nearly as many complaints about this era as others.

    What I quite liked about the opening showing that the adventure had already gotten going by the time the episode started was it explicitly showed that the TARDIS team went on doing things outside of TV stories, which is always something I like but I felt that they didn't do enough in the Chibnall era, at least insofar as I can remember

  • @Raven-Woods
    @Raven-Woods Před rokem +2

    First time I watched this episode, the possibility of yet another Chibnall era Bury Your Gays moment triggered my anxiety pretty hard. I kept clenching the arms of my chair and had to consciously relax my hands. Second time through, I enjoyed it more, and the parts you pointed out were all ones I really liked. Additionally, I liked how Yaz and Graham were written together, and Yaz separately seemed to have more to do than “normal” (for her character). It seemed like the character beats as integrated into the plot worked better for most of the characters than is typical for the era. Unfortunately, it can’t make up for the lack of focus on the characters, and them having any sort of growth storylines, in the rest of the era. But, at least it’s nice to see here.

    This episode is all right. I dont skip this when watching series 12. It's just there. Enjoyable for the moment. I guess in the same way that I think Vampires of Venice is for series 5, New Earth is for series 2 and Eaters of light is for series 10. In my native language of Swedish, I'd say this is a "Lagom" interesting episode.

    Barely remember this one by name, but your initial intro reminds me that I had similar feelings and actually found it weird that there were two episodes with such a similar theme/message so close in the same season without being intentionally linked. Oddly enough, bits of this, the Dalek episode "Resolution" and parts of the 1st half of "Spyfall" kind of blend together in my mind and I can't fully explain why.
    I do like the opening and the use of different characters (one of the few times I feel able to say that for a Chibnall story, as that's often been a major weakness of his work), particularly the cop because he's played by Warren Brown, an actor I know best for Canadian WWII series "X Company" (plus roles in "Strike Back" and "Luther").
    Actually, I think I liked quite a bit of this episode (not sure I'd classify this as a classic I'd love to rewatch but it's strong for this era and one I probably wouldn't mind seeing again), and agree that the treatment of most of the deaths is much better than usual (I blame that final vlog comment as more of a poor attempt at levity, which does feel like a Chibnall addition to "punch up" a scene)

  • @kevin10001
    @kevin10001 Před rokem +2

    With this episode starting with the guest cast we did get to know them better but that’s been a modern era problem the whole time cause of each plot only being one episode unlike the classic era where most plot were done in 4-8 episode serials so we got to know the characters better I also agree the environmental message was handled better in this episode than in orphan 55 cause it actually feels more part of the plot then like the doctor stopping the episode towards the end of the episode to lecture us on climate change

    The framing, build up and attitude of Suki just screamed 'Rani' to me. This story could have easily been her introduction (and possible exit) into Nu Who. It was so obvious that I'm sure the only reason it wasn't her, was due to the rights.

    Beyond the cool villain and the most fun performances from the core cast, this story just utilizes 13 and the fam the best out of the whole era. 13 feels overwhelmed this whole thing like she’s just barely clinging on to the situation. I think she’s really good in those moments. yaz and graham get their own agency, plus the scale is something that the shows new budget should use more. Globetrotting adventures should be commonplace in this TRAVEL show!

    An issue I had was these development moments for Yaz have come so late that it makes it seemed forced. Also the introduction of these characters kinda seemed like oh were introducing this whole new cast cause we are just going to swap the whole set of companions which is weird and obviously didnt happen. The the fact the twist villain is a scientist who did improper science is kind of a huge issue but considering how forgettable she is

    Obviously I fricking love the content and this an amazing dissection of this episode. Actually one of the best I ever seen.
    But...
    I'm ok with Graham been pronounced as "grame" by America because that's how they pronounce it (same with Colin been pronounced Co-lyn) and is probably closer to root accuracy..
    But here it a program that you watch and hear..you know his name is Graham...so use it :P
    Seems we can get correct pronouns (that I'm all for) but can't manage pronunciation of a dudes name 🤔🤔..
    Seriously?

    I paradoxically understand you feeling this episode is mid and yet also this episode made me cry the first time I watched it.
    I was just so burnt by all of the callous death that you've been talking about that I was wracked with dread for that someone in the gay couple was going to die after all. The extra time with them did get me invested and I'm sooo used to gay people dying and men dying heroic deaths that I thought it was a certainty. Not sure the relief would hit me so hard on a rewatch though. Still an overall good episode in my book.
