I am haunted by the tale of the helicopter tail gunner “We came in low & hot, tail toward the trees”. Last month I saw a tribute to a local Viet Nam hero @ The Peoria Riverfront Museum. The display showed pictures of him as commander of a tank division in the jungle. They were ambushed & pinned down behind enemy lines. He called for air support & the caption read “Dump everything you’ve got & kill them all”. He made it back but a lot of his guys didn’t. That’s what I call painting it black.
