Note: the project was shut down for stealing TF2’s assets, code and porting it to a completely DIFFERENT engine (Garry Newman’s new engine).
The devs and the people owning the engine didn’t have permission from valve to use their assets, which explains this takedown. (why call it source 2 then when it isn’t on source 2???).
There’s a lot of shit beneath the surface of all of this, and special thanks to the people in the comments that brings this up to me. But still, even with this information at hand, it doesn’t make Valve look better. It explains the takedown, but in contrast to everything else, they’re still the same.

I mean how much more clear can they make themselves? Bots and cheaters still run freely being racist openly cheating or running bots. Still having thousands of cosmetics in there backpack. @parmesanbrawler7183 Před 4 měsíci +1

@@TheRealClaylex I think I know why, they didn't want to lose money. Let's say Valve allowed CSGO and CS2 to coexist. They'd have to justify CS2's existence with game changing mechanics and leaving behind all the paid content in CSGO to start over implementing all new stuff. Since Valve surely wouldn't put resources into updating both games, they'd stop updating the older CSGO, which would cause people to get tired and move on. Less players means less incentive to buy items to show off in game to other people, which will lead to less sales, and if sales slow down enough, people will see CSGO as a lost cause and cut prices of their items to get as much of their money back as possible, losing money not only for themselves, but Valve as well since they take a cut on all items sold. For various reasons, it's not guaranteed all those people will want to move on to continue spending money in this hypothetical version of CS2, mainly because of the changes Valve would have to make to set the game apart, and the new engine being too intensive on older hardware. Even if they did, with CS2's economy still in it's infancy, not nearly as much money would be made, and it would take years for things to go back to the way they were in CSGO.
You might be wondering why they don't just keep updating CSGO, and that's because it's age was showing. A new coat of paint could keep players engaged and improve the workflow for developers. The source engine is ancient. It's buggy, and highly inefficient for today's standards; long overdo for an update. Utilizing Source 2's new tools would make things much easier.

I still remember when Valve went ballistic on FPSBanana over modders porting HL2 assets (EP1 and EP2 to an extent) to goldsrc. Mind you, this happened between 2008-12 (i may be wrong, but that is what i witnessed at the time). Then, out of nowhere, Valve grabbed a modpack from that same site (those HD models gearbox made, but touched up a bit and ported to HL:S) and put it in HL:S as the "official HD pack". Modders didn't profit for porting these assets to goldsrc, nor did FPSBanana.

2:42 It's way easier to have your legal team send a C&D to a dead project that's using your assets illegally than having a dev team trying to stop hackers from hacking your 16 year old game when they have the source code available to them. It's substantially easier to find workarounds to patches made than to make them in the first place, especially when there are multiple parties hacking your game. I do think that Valve should reconsider their management style so that way a dedicated team can be put on TF2 to fix these kinks, but they honestly have no real monetary incentive to do so. Also I don't see why Valve should be expected to reward people for using their IP illegally, they're already the biggest company to work with their communities, I don't think they should be pushed that far and be tempted to drop working with their community altogether (almost like with what happened with the Invasion update). Valve still works with people if they use their IP legally. Valve's already a saint compared to the rest of the industry, I don't know why we have to be on their ass while every other company is doing much more reprehensible things. I just feel like this video was made too quickly to temper your emotions and it comes off too vitriolic for what's actually going on.

Honestly, and if you think about it, who the hell would ever want to work on TF2 in those offices. Why dedicate spending time trying to understand spaghetti code made by people who don’t work in the company anymore and dealing with issues you cannot reasonably tackle such as the bots. Especially when every single thing you either do or don’t do results in overwhelming negative attention, that would break the spirits of a lot of devs.

The reason for the copyright was the use and straigh copy ofTF2 assets without permission on S&Box and Source 2. They should have clarified that this is why they are striking the project, and given the people behind the project a warning about it that they were gonna do it.
They should have prefaced the DMCA with this sort of explanation. It would have made it less bad.

Their dedication over the years to tf2 was out of love, not obligation.
Artifact was a tragedy, but not for us. Every person who worked on artifact, wanted to, it was the game they all chose to make. I cant imagine how much it must have hurt for them to hear that response when it was revealed.
We may spend a lot of money on tf2, but technically valve owes us nothing. I personally owe years of my life to tf2 and i would love nothing more than a tf3 or even the return of full development. the major overhaul of s&box that had happened recently forced the TF2S2 coders to have to overhaul basically the entire thing. so they were already thinking about just dropping it.
secondly, they were effectively giving out tf2 assets for free, without a license. This is most likely why they got DMCA'd.
also, VALVE has new hires in their legal department which is why they seem like such a killjoy now. and, it's easier to send a simple DMCA than it is to implement bot detection and whatnot on a game that's ~15 years old. 1. TF2 while I'm sure brings in some profits to the company its just a drop in the sea that is Counter Strike, DOTA, hardware they sell and Steam most of all.
    2. You can't just demand for a game to be updated over and over again, or a new installment to be made. That's how you get yearly release trash like CoD or Asscreed. If the devs are feeling burnt out on a game, just let them abandon it. Let the time take it. There's no need for them to be slaves to their project. This isn't a case of devs promising a game and then leaving it in a half baked state. It's a 17 year old finished game with plenty of updates and content added after launch.
    3. They don't need to fucking update the game for it to stay alive.
    4. They can DMCA a TF2s2 project because its centralized with clear origin point. You can't do the same with bots who are written by lone actors sharing their projects on discord servers and other places which would be hard to track down. It's like playing whack-a-mole in that case, and it's giving the bot creators exactly the attention they crave and want and it exacerbates the problem rather than fixing it.
    5. Medals and acknowledgment for what? TF2s2 was an obvious attempt at trying to get job at valve, and rather than being a mod which requires a base game, it ripped assets and code. There is no creativity in there like with Black Mesa who took base Half-Life and actually REMADE it.
    6. You speak of the card game as if it's something they put major assets and care in, but it's pretty clear they acknowledge it's a fucking failure, considering nobody plays anymore, and they don't update it anymore.
    7. 'CS2 released in half assed state' So did CSGO whats your point? They fixed it over time.
    8. 'Why are you rushing this?' 'WAAAAAAAAAAAAH, WHERES MY UPDATES, WHERES MY NEW GAMES, WHERES MY NEW CONTENT, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH' Does that answer your question?
    9. 'Valve doesn't want to do anything to TF2' What's the problem with that? The game as I've already mentioned, IS OLD AS FUCK. The players who want to continue playing the game will continue playing it regardless. Look at such games as Project Reality, Quake, SS13, Titanfall 2 with its Northstar client, GMOD, Empires Mod, Neo Tokyo. Those games have dedicated communities who play them years after the game has """""died""""". If you genuinely care about this game you'd continue playing it regardless of the player count.
    10. 'What else can we fucking do other than to scream at this corporate brick wall, that doesn't give a single fuck about it's players' Well you could just stop supporting them and playing their games, but you probably won't do that since you built your community AND SOURCE OF REVENUE around the very game and company you're complaining about.
Honestly there is not a single thing of value to be taken out of this video if you have above room temperature IQ (in Celsius), and aren't looking for a reason to be angry for stupid shit nobody cares about. Stay angry.

It sounds more like ranting about Valve for not updating TF2 than "ripping of the bandaid" and talking about Valve taking down these projects...
TF:S2 was taken down, because creators didn't had permission to use assets in s&box, which is NOT Valve's IP.
Portal64 was taken down _by developer_ - Valve had advised him to do so, because he may feel the wrath of Nintendo if he doesn't.
It's not the first time Valve took a project down, nor the last one. But because it's TF2 then Valve bad? Should it happen to other game most people wouldn't care at all.

Sorry dude, but they just straight up stole proprietary assets to use in a standalone game and then monetize is for their own gain all without the permission of the IP holder. That is theft and deserves DMCA. You can't just steal assets from people without permission, try to get money off it then say you were justified because you cared about TF2. The way the devs went about this was entirely wrong and they alone are at fault for it being shut down. Please tell the whole story if you're to publicly comment on these topics. I'd understand if Valve stonewalled any attempt at updating the game or porting it but this isn't the case.
Also Garry, unlike with Garry's Mod, has specifically stated that no proprietary, unlicensed assets were to be used in S&box. So if Valve didn't shut this down, Garry would have.

If TF2s core gameplay becomes completely unplayable from bots and cheaters, the cosmetics people spend money on will lose their value. I am a genuine believer that Valve should NOT release any more updates or release new content into this game until deal with the Bot issue, or until they hire someone who can. There is literally no point in spending the effort adding new maps and content if you can't even play it due to how many damn bots and cheaters there are.
I have had no incentive to spend money on this game for the past 2 years because there is no point. Valve has the money and resources to fix their games, they just don't want to and are constantly focusing on new toys that no one is gonna care about in 3 months. Valve have some of the most dedicated fan bases for their games ever, some of which go out of their way to MAKE CONTENT FOR THEIR GAMES which they can then use to MAKE THEMSELVES MORE MONEY, and you don't give a shit about them. Hell they have fans who are coders and who actively push bug fixes and security measures that can help, not to mention community servers having lots of measures to counter bots themselves. The fact their legal teams can shut down fan projects but can't shut down bot hosters and cheater websites astounds me.
I love this game to death, I've loved this game since I joined in 2011, and I still play to this day and will play until the game dies. But I'm also wanting to play casual again and not the same pool of community servers I usually visit. I want to play on new official maps with random people across the world. But I can't do that because Valve doesn't give a shit and these f***ing cheaters are running rampant. I could live with never getting another major update ever again, we did so for 6 years and made peace with it, all I want is just to play the damn game without cheaters and bots. Maybe it is Stockholm that makes me want to continue to play, but I refuse to spend any more money on this game until shit change, because there's no point in sending them my money if they don't want to do anything.
Valve, stop making worthless toys, fix your damn games, improve the damn security, and take down these f***ing bot hosters. We love your game, so f***ing fix it.

  • @hanneskarlbom6644

I'd say, just be glad TF2 is still around, from Valve's view there is probably little reason to keep supporting a game that is, relatively speaking, dead and probably doesn't make much money. Add in the fact that the code is extremely spaghettified, which makes it hard to make any change without breaking a bunch of things, not to mention making a system to deal with hackers. It's probably more likely that they would make a TF3, but then again, Valve would need a pretty good reason to do so.
If I were the TF2 community I'd see if it was possible to make a deal with Valve like the NS2 community did and have the game and possible TF3 development handed over to the community with volunteers continuing development.

The only reason why Valve does keep the servers running is because of the steam community market, if tf2 was no longer online and the servers were shutdown, it would make every item lose all value to the point where it'll affect other games in some sense so it'd pretty much burn a lot of money for valve, that's my theory on why valve just keeps doing the bare minimum and keeps it running and why we only get seasonal updates, which are usually tied to a seasonal/holiday sale.

Then the TF2S2 team said to valve something along the lines of “if you don’t get back to us soon we’ll just take that as a yes and keep making it”. I feel like this argument loses a lot of ground because people frame it as being theft of the game files. The problem this has actually curtailed is the actual, ultimate goal of S2TF2, which is that it has success. Success meaning, in it's extremes, that _everyone_ switches from TF2 to S2TF2. In this case, TF2 would stop being profitable to Valve, the defacto creators of 90% of all the asset manhours in S2TF2. The logical answer is either to take down what is now objectively a detriment to themselves, or taking over the project. The latter would be a more PR-healthy option, but Valves hiring practices would eventually just leave S2TF2 abandoned.
This is all a scenario of hypothetical extremes, but you have to consider that there are only two actual scenarios:
      - Valve lets S2TF2 achieve total victory, at a great loss for themselves and relinquishing control of a piece of art, a moneymaker and part of their identity as a video game studio.
      - Valve capsizes the project, either by taking over and flushing out the actual developers, or taking down the project as a whole. The former option is only viable when it's in a state where S2TF2 has already usurped TF2s position.
You can argue that S2TF2 only wants to be a sideproject, but it's fundamental design intentions still make it an attempt at "bigger and better".
Saying you don't want to compete doesn't mean you aren't competing.

There is one option we *might* have.
Cut their income of money, and I mean ALL money, not just tf2. If it's only tf2 then they shut it down completely. But make it so they don't get any money from all of steam? Not that is a blow they won't take lightly.
No, don't ask me how to do it, I have literally zero idea. I simply stated the one thing that keeps Valve being crap is money, and without it, they will become desperate.

Started giving out more update, try to balance the game more, more operations/content for the player.
