The most unbreakable record of all time IMO isn't even in the video! Glenn Hall played in 502 consecutive games as a goalie. Rule changes can potentially allow a lot of these records to change, there's no rule changes that will ever happen that will allow any goalie to even come close to 502 consecutive games played.

    • @orbyfan
      @orbyfan Před rokem +2

I agree. While it's unlikely that the others will be broken, it's not inconceivable. Hall's record was 502 consecutive complete games, not just playing in them. The increased length of the season (70 to 82 games is a 17% increase), plus the tiring aspects of cross-continent travel (Hall did it in a 6-team league that didn't extend west of Chicago, when the teams travelled by train) make his record secure.
Let's not forget Georges Vezina's consecutive game record of 327 regular season and 39 playoff games from 1910-25, using the same stick the whole time. The streak ended when he collapsed with tuberculosis after the 1st period of the 1925-26 season opener.
Speaking of goaltending records, how about Ken McAuley playing all but 1 period for the New York Rangers in 1943-44, posting a record of 6-39-5 with a GAA of 6.24 (310 goals). He improved slightly the following season, playing 46 games with a record of 11-25-10, 4.93. I met him in 1979 and asked if he was the man who played for Rangers, and didn't he set some records? He replied, "Most goals against in a season, most goals against in a game, worst goals against average in a season." He was on the losing end of a 15-0 rout by the Red Wings on Jan. 23, 1944, with a 16th goal disallowed because it came right at the final buzzer. That single game record was tied by Doug Soetart of the Winnipeg Jets in a 15-2 loss in Minnesota on Nov. 11, 1981.
I'm surprised that Wayne Gretzky never tied or beat Darryl Sittler's 10-point single game record, and that the record still stands alone after 47 years.

I agree that Mario's feat will never be matched. You have to get a penalty shot and score on it (rare). Then you also need a high scoring close game such that you get a chance to get an empty netter. Plus, a PP, Shorthanded, and even strength goal. Not going to happen. Ever.

163 assists in a season is the most unbreakable (seasonal) record. Gretzky came close to his other seasonal records, but not his 163 assists.
Also 11 straight 100+ assist seasons. Only 2 players have ever had even just *one* 100 assist season (Orr & Lemieux). And Gretzky did it ELEVEN straight seasons. Insane.

I agree! And the most unbreakable career record is Gretzky's 1963 assists. He did it in 20 seasons and it's more assists than the top 20 non-Gretzky assist seasons in NHL history.
The 11 straight 100+ assist seasons is a great shout, although not considered an official NHL record. Maybe one day if a few players end up with a few consecutive 100+ assist seasons they will make it official.

The Habs record for most points is even more impressive when you consider the fact that tie games was a common occurrence back then: if the game was tied after 60, the game ended and both teams got only one point. Fast forward today, where a tie game after 60 means both teams get a point, but there's a chance to get a second if you score in overtime or win in a shoutout. Of the 12 ties the Habs had, it's easy to believe at least 6 of them would have resulted in the Canadiens winning in overtime with today's rules. Even more if you consider the pure talent on that team.
The Habs had nine (9!) HHoF members on that team, which is something we will never see in the salary cap era of today, making it truly impossible to repeat. As a comparison, I'd say the Lightning had 4, maybe 5 if you're feeling very generous, future HHoF players on their roster for their run at three straight SCF

Here are two I don't think will ever be broken...
Michel Belhumeur: He played 35 games for the Washington Capitals in 1974-75 and was the winner in zero. He had 24 losses, three ties, and appeared in eight non-decisions. Due to the NHL no longer having ties, and having games end in shootouts, any goaltender that appears in at least 35 games in a season will be bound to win one somewhere.
Yvon Lambert: He played in 77 games for the Buffalo Sabres in 1981-82, and he scored 25 goals and 39 assists for 64 points. Despite that, he played the entire 1982-83 season in the minors. Unless we end up seeing another NHL season get locked out entirely again, like in 2004-05, no player will score 64 points in a season while spending the entire following season in the minors ever again.

If the teams didn't get points for ties, the Canadiens 60 wins would have given them only 120 points. It was the single point received for the 12 draws that put them at 132. The difference now is there is always a team that gets 2 points, and the losing team after 60 minutes still gets 1. Prior if you lost in OT you didn't get any points.

@@seantylerfoley OT wins would also be asterisk worthy, since when the Canadiens set the record there wasn't any overtime. Overtime just started in I think 1983-84. And one further asterisk potential is that the Canadiens had an 80 game schedule, not an 82 game schedule.
Bruins might break the points record, but not likely within the same constraints as the Canadiens (but of course, the Canadiens were missing roster constraints that Boston has now).

5 Stanley cups in a row will absolutely be beaten with the amount of consolidation going on in american business, unless hopefully, the league goes bust, we evolve as a society and stop glamourising professional sports and big business, allowing for the purification of ice hockey, reverting it back to a more homegrown product.

The Bruins are 39-7-5 after 51 games with 83 points out of a possible 102. At an .814 P%, this would give them the points record after 82 games, just eclipsing les Habitants by a point at 133.
However, it's a game played by human beings, and the single biggest factor in sports is injuries. Also, I discount everything before 1967 very heavily - just a different game back then. Mandatory masks and helmets and rules toned down physicality quite a bit, the slap shot, curved blades, some other things. I know, I played HS hockey in the very early 70s, just a different game, downright stodgy before Hull, Orr, Guy LaFleur, others.
