I'll be doing 16:30 - 22:00 today and I'll get paid a full 8 hours worth £153.28. I do PM shifts starting anything from 11am to 18:00.
Them later starts dont usually run past midnight but it happens. I'm 9 times out of 10 in bed by midnight.
Passed my module 3a today! (The reversey bit) one more certificate and I'm officially a trucker. This time next week it'll all be done, fingers crossed!

Nah, I'm kidding. If you find yourself a good company, life will be just fine and enjoyable. I cannot stress enough how important it is to find a good company that will respect you and your efforts (and won't run you like a bandit in the night). It's all up to you what awaits you.

I'm on class 2 multi drop in a 26t, and I absolutely love it, I love city centre driving, which keeps you on your toes, also multi drop keeps me fit and I'm running around.
Still trying to find work😭😭. Passed class 1 over a month ago and everywhere wants XP. Getting a bit frustrating now but hay ho, good things come to those who wait😇

Been doing class 2 for 5 years. Only thing that kills is for me is the hours! Cant complain about anything else… love the flexibility of agency work. Saved hard now have just decided to take a month off. Probs go to class 1 soon!

Advice for New Drivers get on the the Agency before trying to apply for jobs unless they state they accept new passes it very difficult as you need to get that experience first job I did was Hgv Class 2 Driving a Bin Wagon that gave me all the exp u need especially when it come to reversing and very tight yards and streets u Learn a lot once u done that for 6 months u well on u way....also be prepared to stand u ground if a truck does not pass u daily checks...
Been doing it about 6 months now and have to say its the best thing ive done. The money is great compared to the jobs ive done before and the freedom is a great feeling too. I'd definitely say for the younger lads going for it to try find a warehouse to wheels scheme, didn't have to pay for my license and had a job waiting for me after passing and after first passing having guidance for a few weeks helped massively too. If anyones thinking about doing it, DO IT!

How hard was it to find work?
The money's good because you do 200-250 hours, people I know top out at 50k but that's CML drivers doing obscene hours. Get an education, get a 50k a year office job where you work 8 hours and actually have some semblance of a life.
Actually mate, I do about 180 hours, have a good work & life balance and get great money. As for working in an office I'd rather die. Thanks for the condescending reply. @@spopple88
I was a bus driver and took the leap to class 2. As a 50 year old I have to say, yes, it is hard work, especially as a class 2. I was lucky I knew someone who was a truck driver and was very helpful with advice. My first job was all handball but didn’t pay too badly, now I work for Dhl delivering food to stores in cages and it pays very well. It looks easy, it definitely isn’t, so much so that one morning I found it so stressful I almost abandoned my truck. I have persevered, and although it’s hard I’ve taken well over £1000 some weeks. Understanding the driving time directive has been the trickiest thing and has taken me quite a while to learn. I love the driving, it’s the manual labour and reversing into tough places, but you get used to it. My advice to anybody is go class 1 first, class 2 is a lot of kerbside work, and make sure you understand the driving time directive.
That's good money. I left my class 2 job nearly 3 years ago and would never go back to hgv driving. I was doing 60 hours a week for mediocre money. I wouldn't go back even if money was amazing. I now do 36 hours a week for same sort of money with no stress whatsoever. It must be great earning the money but no time to spend it. I have so much respect for hgv driver's because I understand the shit they have to put up with.

I passed my Class 2 test last year. Applied for 50+ jobs. The only ones that offered me interviews were Food Service and Bread Deliveries so alot of manual handling but the money’s not bad and you do get used to it. Seems they’re the best ones to go for to get your foot in the door and get that experience.

It is a difficult job and the hours can kick the hell out of you sometimes but I do enjoy doing it, luckily, my new hobby has become making little CZcams videos which I can do in work! But seriously it can be rough but I make sure I have plenty of time at home with the kids. All in all I love driving class 1, most of the time.

You've just been describing the shear enjoyment of the boredom a truck driver has to contend with including the very real exileration of the welcoming party and ceremonial traditions awaiting you at your destination .
But above all it's the overwhelming excitement of waiting in the multitude of traffic and consignee queues that never diminishes that you will never tire of. Happy days comrades.

worst decision i made 15 years in I want out. sadly nothing pays as much without retraining plumber, electrician etc. Luckily my current job is a half decent firm so its bareable. Makes me laugh when i hear nurses, ambulance, train, highways, test examiners go on strike for better pay n conditions. Some folk love it some hate it, me, well i wish i could walk away today!

You can walk away. I got myself a slightly lower payed job and I'm much happier. I was doing 60 hours a week Hgv, now I'm doing 36. And I'm only earning slightly less. Your health is more important than money . Take care.
Walk away mate! I've done it, even with kids at home... I found another job within 2 weeks and it changed my life... Being miserable at work isn't worth whatever they are paying you.. It will slowly kill you..

I wouldn’t unless you have money to last until you get work which won’t be until March on agency and won’t get a job without 2 years experience 1st 2 years the hardest by then you already hate the job 😂
It can be a very hard job if you aren't comfortable in your own head. I've seen guys in the first year of driving (I've only been on it 1) leave because spending 12 hrs 5 days on ya own can be brutal
Yeah it can be hard but you just gotta keep your mind busy with podcasts and calling other drivers etc, makes the job alot more bearable.

Trucking is the most crazy industry anyone can get into, from pay to vosa to delivery to tacho add madness on the road, Even when someone crash into you from the back you are at fault already. It's easier to loose all points on your driving licence within short time

Yeah you just have to keep going mate, maybe go in and see some people face to face might help, thats usually how i get my jobs.
I was first mate try agency's first give it 6 months on agency's and you should get a job then.

With such a sedentary lifestyle, I would advise adding in your weekly recommended cardio time. And careful of food intake, it's a career you can lose if you have a heart condition or type II diabetes. Which both are part and parcel of a sedentary lifestyle and being overweight.

I'm lucky enough to get home every evening. During the summer evenings I'm out cycling for an hour or two and winter months I try go walking more. But in fairness most of the work I do, you get plentyof exercise
So I’ve just had my license for just over a year, went direct to class 1. Was offered two jobs the day I passed. It was driving a class2 and working on site, tbh the work was boring and I decided to jump to class 1. It was a tramping job and the most unorganised company I’ve ever worked for. Not only did they not pay me correctly, I had to wait a 2 months for my expenses. They wouldn’t pay for parking if you didn’t have a load so I had to find lay-by’s to sleep in. This is stressful, the company pushed me to 15 hours daily if I was able to get a split rest in. I would be 2 mins off my driving limit or minutes of my working hours limit just hoping there was space when I found somewhere. I now work for a different company and my start time can vary between 2am to 7 am, mostly around 4am. I work close to 13 hours almost everyday with a couple of almost 15 hours a couple of times a week. If I’m lucky I’ll do a 11 hour shift or maybe a 10 hour shift once a month. Pay on pay looks good, it’s not a bad salary, but I get no over time pay and if you break it down into hours you can earn more in Aldi per hour, you just won’t work so many hours so take home less each week. Hands down driving is the worst job I’ve ever had regarding hours and pay. I know some people that love it and Some that hate it. If I got a job where I worked 12 hours a day and had a regular start time then it wouldn’t be a bad job at all. I prefer class 1 over class 2 or at least the class 2 trucks I’ve driven. The work I do isn’t hard, it’s one of the easiest jobs I’ve had tbh. I still struggle with reversing now and again but some days I surprise myself and think wow I reverse it into there in one go even on my blind side. Not so long again the uk gov was paying for people to do there HGV, not sure if they still are but worth a look.
It's one of those if you find a good company its a nice job, but find the wrong employer and it's hell.
I like the idea of getting a class 1, an ADR and driving fuel trucks. It can pay quite well, apparently.
Yeah its good but the gap has closed there's not alot of difference in it for ADR now.
There is, fuel tankers class 1&2 wages vary between £16-£26ish an hour in my area, most general haulage is around £13-£16 an hour for class 1
Hours are horrendous on fuel have to work days and nights fxks u up mentally

OI I generally have a very very good sense of direction and can read a map. dad insisted I navigate us to holidays when I was a kid... didnt "teach me" per say just told me I was riding in the front lobbed a map at me and told me to get us to center parks. think I got the hang of it pretty fast though as I got a little older and smarter I suspeced that he actually knew the way (this was in 90s).. anyway yeh Id be ok getting places but gears nah Id get fed up quite quickly.... even get fed up in my car after a few mins in traffic.
also IF i ever have kids I fully intend to employ this tactic on them. couldt live with myself if i raise kids that needed satnav to get to supermarket
@@Gazzxy I used to follow someone else that I though might know where they were going sometimes if I got desperate. Never used to buy map just nip in the services and try to memorise bits on my way to places I didnt know.

Very random and specific question, do you ever have someone working along side you. Sometimes I see lorry drivers with a passenger in the other seat and just wonder what they’re doing there. Like are they taking turns on a long drive or do you sometimes just get to tag along with other?
2 reasons
1. Being trained
2. Long distance cab sharing usually european drivers.
A lot of places won’t allow passengers in the cab on their sites. As has been said it’s mainly the continental drivers “ double manning” where they both drive up to 10 hours a day so more mileage and hence more work can get done. You tend to find the continental lads will sometimes have their girlfriends “ tag” along with them. These are the drivers who are away weeks at a time and live in the truck most of the year.
@@truckitprayle also jobs with allot of manual handling such as furniture and appliance delivery (with the better companies) tend to use either two drivers, or a driver and a drivers mate to help with heavy lifting.
Just got my class 2 and class one licence completed just trying to find somewhere now mate how many days do you get off mate a week or is it 7days a week
I do mon-friday mate weekends are optional

The moneys good yes but the best thing is you don't have to put up with whinging co workers truck paperwork trailer and your off.
this is litteraly one of the reasons am doing it. worked many places with many people and I can say with certanty am done with people... just chill in a truck day to day sounds almost like heaven.. ofc theres dealing with the office and pick/drops but that wont be all the time... and wont have to look at the office people
must admit am a little torn. about to go through a course to get class 1. but I know full well how generally disrespectful this country is of its truckers, but I am lucky in that my company are putting me through a course (though anoying because it some sort of apprenticship it will take a chunk of the year to even get to the licence) so paying for it and finding a job are no problem at least :) and i always have the option of doing it in europe instead after I satisfy whatever contract conditions they dream up if any.
think am just excited for the peace and quiet .. and i like driving big things :) but am stuck with a golf atm

Not all hgv jobs are bay to bay I deliver multi drop to shops in tight housing estate and villages. the cages weigh 350kg and have to be push over uneven ground and some handball. Some drivers have quit because they can’t push the cages

Wondering if you could give me some advice. I’m 37 and wanting a change of career, the pandemic kind of showed myself and alot of others that I don’t want to work in hospitality anymore. I recently got my drivers license (I know it’s weird waiting till your 30s to get driving lol) and was wondering would I face any kind of unforeseen problems getting jobs as someone who is getting their HGV license at a slightly older age than most? Also the fact I haven’t been driving that long?

They don't really care as much your car driving experience, its more your driving as a hgv driver which in itself can be difficult to get started when ypu pass anyway but most people start with agencies and get some experience that way, but id never say its to late unless you're like 70+ of course.

So I am approaching 60, when I can get my pension. 60 is way too early to retire and lorry driving is something I've always considered to be a job I would like. If I was to do all the training at my own expense is it likely I would get employment, as a 60 year old rookie with zero experience? I accept it would be more difficult than a younger guy, or gal, would experience but if its a waste of time I'd not want to be out the money. Anyone in the industry have a feeling for how this could go, is it most likely a waste of my time, money and effort? i'm also in Northern Ireland so the market is not so big here!
It's hard to say i know here in england you could get agency work easy but not to sure where you stand on that side of the pond.
Nobody will employ a new driver with zero experience at your age, it's next to impossible even for new drivers upto the age of 26.
Insurance companies won't touch you.
You do realise you need to take a medical every 5yrs don't you??
best chance you would have in NI is to try the bigger companies...agro..manfreight..McCulla in lisburn...Derry in portadown....they were running academies not so long ago,but no doubt it will will difficult with no experience and work is very light at the minute not many are taking on drivers
Don’t waste your money by the time you earn it back you will be retired
I hate to say this but consider doing a year at a bus company. They cover the training costs and you will have experience with large vehicles. Only down side is the cargo you have to carry 🙈. Good luck

@@truckitprayle December January and feb are dead for hgv work even agencies struggling to fill your week up put it'll pick up. all you need is one placement for 6 months and companies will look into you more. some companies have insurance policy's where you have to have so much experience but that is to be expected with the nature of the job
I was talking with somebody with class1 he's been on agency for a while he finds it difficult to find work yet we are told there is a driver shortage 🤔
Try a big company who offer apprenticeships, they usually take new passes DHL have big adverts on the back of there trailers. I think culina or one of there subsidiary companies do too. January is a quiet month
