Finally! Someone on the internet that doesn't have three dozen steps to their sharpening system! It's all personal and many people get amazing sharpness out of their tools but this shows that for most jobs you don't really need it.
Been watching a lot of sharpening...even tho I’m not a wood worker but a leather guy....
One of the best diy jigs and explanation
I saw this video, bought the plans, and spent a couple of hours building it. I was pleasantly surprised not only by the simplicity of the plans, but how well this jig worked. Thanks for doing what you do. Surprised Matthais hasn't built something similar to compete with you.
Built this last winter, now I wonder how I did without it! It's killer and fast! I have never been able to get my chisels so sharp. There was a period where I was looking for more chisels to sharpen and did all my father in laws chisels for him....yea I was REALLY loving my jig! Correction still do! Thank you John!
I just bought this plan yesterday. Built the jig today. Man does this thing work good. I'm going to make a second blade holder just for planes. On my chisel holder I'm going to add a positive stop to hold the chisel square consistently. Great jog John! Keep up the good work! Love all of your channels!
Great resource! Probably the most functional tutorial in your library. Who doesn't have an edge somewhere in their shop that needs to be kept sharp? Most times they get dull just by looking at them. And a super easy build. Will certainly be buying these plans before summer. Thanks for the video!
Great video and great jig. Thanks for showing all the steps and showing it doesn't take 6 stones and strops.
I've been messing around with sharpening fixtures and found this fixture has several features which should be considered by anyone wanting to make such a sharpening jig. First, the abrasive is held in place so it can't move, freeing up both hands to work the fixture. Second, it's large enough that you can grasp it with both hands making it grind faster and it's less tiring. Third, it's large size makes it less likely to rock or tilt which improves its accuracy. Good job, John!
This jig is an absolute must!
John,
I built the sharpening jig and absolutely love it. As I used it, I realized that my Work Sharp didn't even come close to the good job this jig does. Thanks. I would really like to see an adaptation or similar jig for knife blades. Hank.
+Hank Kennedy
Thanks! I'm working on a knife sharpening jig and the video and plans for that should be done in a week or so.
Guys, and girls... I just bought the plans... they are absolutely superb, very detailed, and beautifully laid out. Even I will have no problem making this.
+baconsoda
Many thanks Brendan!
You are such an interesting teacher 👍🏻 love your videos
I'm amazed at how well this works. It's so simple and easy and my chisels are sharper than when they came from the factory.
Thanks John
Thanks for the plans on the sharpening jig. I made one for sharpening my skew chisels on the lathe. I have never had an edge as sharp as my chisels are now. I didn't realize that they could cut so well.
More great tips John. Sometimes simple works and you can actually accomplish more.
Thank you very much for Sharpening Jig For Chisels And Plane Blades video .
Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the free plans.
I was thinking about buying a sharpener, but they are very expensive.
You saved me a lot of money which I can use for other things.
I will build one for 25°, 28° and 30° instead of making it adjustable, so I will be secured for these degrees.
Willy from Belgium.
Nicely done. Simple smart design
+phooesnax
Thanks :)
I have just made the jig and it's the best ever I have sharpened 2 chisels only 4 to go then 2 planes thanks John
great job John, my chisel set was the first thing I bought when I started working with wood, gotta lot to learn especially how to sharpen my chisels the right way, and this jig I think is the answer. I love watching your videos, very informative. thanks
Thanks for taking the time to draw up the plans, just downloaded them and maybe I will do a video on making my own. Thanks again for sharing.
almost iconic design.
I enjoyed the info on wood working projects too make your jobs easier. Also sure love that wood vise. Only problem is if i had one. I wouldn't use it, it would be just a show piece............Thanks John very nice work
I built it!!! I'm restoring two old Stanley's from early 1900s and your jig seemed necessary to the project. I must say that I my sharpening problems are solved! I experimented w some weight ( 4' square, 1' thick steel plate) set o top. (My jig is flat on top). and it worked great w some old eft up chisels.
Thank you John
You always come up with something useful and simple.
Sharpening has always annoyed me.
This is a great jig John, I like how easy it is to adjust for different angles.
That's a great little design John. This type of jig has been on my list of todos for awhile now... May have to bump it up the list.
Another simple to build, useful project. Great work John, thanks.
That is one very useful and effective jig John, well explained build sequence too.
Cheers
Mike
Nice job. Love your idea 👍
Nice jig! Fast and easy way to sharpen!
Love how simple it is, great design!
+Shop built
Thanks :)
The best project that I've seen. I'll make my jig exactly yours. Thanks
Nice, great job John!
To achieve a hollow ground tip on a chisel I use a fine grit belt on a belt sander at the back wheel to sharpen mine.
nice jig john! works GREAT and wow cuts end grain like butter! very informative as always!:)
This is great, John, but the original was great too.
Hi John,
I suspect that you are reinventing the wheel but with less success. Unlike your stellar plans for a router lift (which I built and use frequently and would readily recommend to woodworkers), you are creating a jig which will plow trenches into your sharpening stones, unlike a roller sharpening jig which can be moved around the surface to eliminate that problem. A few loonies spent on a decent roller jig is a way better option.
Made a subscriber out of me. Thank you! Great Idea. I hate all those 12-15 dollar honing guides. This is a fabulous idea.
that's looks both practical and effective.
Brilliant work John thanks for sharing
This one is going on my To Build-list.
Great jig.
Just purchased the plans and looking forward to making and using it. Many thanks...!!
Great jig, John... as always
Very nice jig, John!
Awesome and really useful jig. Sharpening by hand is OK but those kind of jigs are much better in my opinion. It would be really cool if you could came up with some kind of jig, for sharpening round gauges or V chisels! I know I ask way too much. Perhaps you could just consider my comment as food for thought! Thanks for sharing that awesome tool with us!
+Scrap wood City
Thanks! Lots of jigs out there for round gouges, and a v-groove chisel would be a bit too specialized to make a jig for.
I’ve been sharing my build of this like crazy! Tons of interest. I’ve sent them your way. Hope you sell some more plans. I absolutely love this jig. Thanks again J.
Great Job!!! A good way to hone your woodworking skills.
this is godly awesome. I'm making one of these asap. this takes the guess work out of sharpening completely.
Great I am a believer. I will be building that jij.
Great video. love the jig.
Muy bueno John, gracias por compartir los planos! Siempre miro tus videos.Gracias por subtitular los videos. Saludos!
Great project!
End grain cutting.....fantastic. I wheel sharpen my secondary and stone the primary but thats hit or miss. Good jig.
Keep up the great work! This is awesome man!
Simple, effective, perfect!
+Jeremy Schmidt
Thanks :)
Considering how standard most chisels are and that most people have a set, i'd probably invest time in making groove plate that sticks underneath the holder. That way you'll always get the perfect shave. :D
And it's very easy to make too, you just take a 2 3 mm piece of plywood, cut it to shape to fit inside the clamp, and then grove it with the table saw to fit the chisel.
Oh and this jig could also work as a stone fixer. We all have one or two stones that are lopsided or worn off in the center. If you get a very hard piece of metal and affix it at a sharp angle, you can scrape the surface, i'm willing to bet that with a home hardened piece you could true up a stone within 20 scrapes even for really bad ones.
Love it John.
You Rock. Great project. Thanks.
Thanks especially for the advice as to how to keep it simple :)
As always, very cleaver John! I really like your video and yes, very informative. Thank you for your vidoe
nice jig!!
After much searching and getting advice on which honing jig is the best, I found the Veritas jig was the most recommended. So I ordered one the other day for $158 plus tax. I just canceled that order and bought your plans. BEST investment I have made yet! Thank you so much.
Very ingenious!
Hi there from Portugal,
Nice, Thanks

Excellent.
That's really good. So, time to put my money where my mouth is and buy the plans.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
super job
You are a help to make me a sharp tool again
That`s realy good!
Awesome, very inspiring and guess I'm going to make something similar for myself :)
+Get Hands Dirty
Thanks!
Darn it! I just bought the Veritas MKII system last weekend!
u are awesome man!
Lol at 2:30 "I'm just using regular woodworking glue..."
Me: Mustard?
Good job...
Thank you I learned a lot from you
Very nice!
+FastEasySmartTOOL
Thanks :)
slip part A between B1 and B2
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking B1?"
"I think I am B2, it's chisel sharpening time!!"
its totally new knowledge for me about that 25 & 30 degree position...and it has awesome result...is it always that the 25 degree must get longer action than the 30 ... thanks a lot ...
Thanks so much
Great jig, as usual! Now you need to make a jig to flatten the stone that you used to sharpen the blades...... :) Steve
Polishing does not really affect cutting to a large degree, what polishing does is affects the finish left behind. Polished tools like chisels and planes can leave a very clear and bright surface with far supperior detail. It depends on what you want out of your tools and the finish you are happy with.
At first I thought you were putting mustard on it, but then u said wood glue and I laughed like crazy.😀
This is sharp :)
Great video, thanks for sharing it with us.
I noticed at one point your hand accidently touched the table saw blade.
+mohamed shifan
What are you talking about?
+mohamed shifan Crack in India must be cheap.
John Heisz 3.53
John Heisz Of course it is nothing serious. But I thought it is dangerous for the saw blade to be openly exposed like that. It went through my mind even before you accidentally touched the blade.
+mohamed shifan
Yes, I barely escaped with my life. Came close to losing my entire torso in that one.
Hey, awesome vid! Do you know, what grid the fine side is?
As always, excellent video! Question: I've watched a LOT of videos on chisel and plane iron sharpening. So far, you are the only one who recommends a SECOND bevel on chisels and planes. Why do you recommend that?
IMHO, I think the reason for the second bevel on chisels and planes is that you do not need to grind/remove so much metal to achieve a cutting edge. The next time he sharpens the chisels or planes, as long as the first bevel is sound he doesn't need to make that grind again any time soon. Only the second bevel needs to be redone, thus saving time and precious metal on the chisels until it's time to grind the first bevel again.
I'm just going to use some brads and mustard to hold it together. Make sure you use yellow and not honey mustard.
Good morning John, a question for you. As do the wooden bench press? Any video on how to make the press ?. Congratulations for your videos and I wish you success, my respect for voice, your videos are great, they are very practical and educational. Greetings from from Nicaragua. John, I subscribed to your channel.
nice
I may need to build one of these for my lathing tools. o.o
LOL,Here I thought it was going to be a electric planer blade sharpener.Other than that it was a eye opener even still.Thanks.
I am definitely going to make this. What grits are the two sides of your stone? Thanks!
Excelent
Great jig design, John! I've been wanting to buy an electric sharpening system. I think I'll try this first. Might end up being the ticket. How often do you have to lap your stone?
Nice simple build, I was wondering of you could put in a couple of set-screws to adjust the two angles with so you set them once and then just tilted the guide block to the other set-screw somehow. Or maybe it's not necessary as a couple of marked lines will do just fine. :-P
