Discovered De Toppers today by accident, looking for “If I had Words” - instant “feelgood”! ABBA-meets-Liberace-meets-Paul O’Grady. Whether they’re musically great or just good is a matter of opinion but they’re GREAT entertainers. I'm smiling from ear to ear!

You got it all right! They're an occasional band of Dutch singers - each having his own carreer - that form this group De Toppers and they give a big concert in the Amsterdam Arena once a year. You don't go there to sit and listen to a musical masterpiece, no no. You go there to party!

Two year on &, looking this up to play to a friend (actually, to illustrate the classics being "hijacked" & turned into pop hits), it STILL brings an instant smile of joy which won't fade until long after the final bars. Love the descent from the stage (4.21)! This vid' is the apogee of all that is joyous about "camp."
Might be a generational thing, but I like this version better. Much livelier and Karins' voice is spectacular ! They both compliment each other vocally very well !

Cover versions come in 3's, they either are (1) better, (2) just as good as, or (3) worse. It's a risky business. Thing is some songs lend themselves to covers, others are best left alone. This one, well somewhere between 2 & 3 I'm afraid. I'm being kind tonight.

Werkelijk slecht, totaal niet echt of met passie. Die boer in de film Babe zingt het met meer passie dan deze twee. Dat het publiek dit prachtig was kon natuurlijk zijn dan ze al flink beschonken waren (dan dans je nog mee op een toilet dat je doortrekt) of dat men noch nooit de zeventiger versie van Scott Fitzgerald gehoord hebben.
