Pat's done a better job marketing the NHL than the NHL has in the last 10 years
and its not even close
Facts. I do appreciate though that the NHL isn't getting out over their skis too far though. Expanding and pushing too hard too quickly could be a recipe for everything to fall apart. Like Gary said, they're in a fantastic spot right now, keep it moving, but you don't have to go full throttle and screw it all up either.
Pat and the boys are doing hockey a HUGE service. And I appreciate the hell out of you guys doing that.
Absolutely!
Hockey players don't talk too much because if they get the other team mad you are a target at 30 MPH
It makes me happy to see hockey is finally getting the respect it deserves on the biggest stages. For so long, it was like the long-lost stepchild of sports. People knew about it but didn't talk about it or watch it, and that has all changed. Hockey is more than a sport, it's a brotherhood.
Small town Canada. A hockey team, a restaurant and 1 stop light.
It was? I always thought it had a substantial amount of popularity, its part of “the big 4” after all
@@officialfumofeltingchannel1490 NO, hes right.. They don't get the love they deserve and haven't for a long time. You watch any sports show they don't speak about hockey hardly ever. The coverage wasn't great and could only get it on certain channels and attendance wasn't great, but it's doing a lot better now and believe it or not Pat is helping all of that, might sound crazy but I'm sure he's helped a ton of people who watch espn get either back into hockey or start watching it for the first time.
@@dolphpaperroute6362 but it was probably in his contract to talk about the nhl and everything, he never really talked about hockey before espn, and I don’t ever remember him interviewing hockey related people before the espn deal
@@kingha88 adding on to that hockey in canada is literally like football in the states in a lot of ways at least it was when i grew up in the 90's and 2000s and all the time before that so it's pretty awesome.....but northeastern usa there's a lot of love for hockey it's awesome how it's a bit niche in the usa, that's honestly never going to change....not to get to weird but it's why culture in general is actually heavily based on actual climate and weather and history.....Australia had the biggest rugby league in the world, it will always be that way...bringing more people into the mix absolutely awesome though.
I'm 43 and this year I have been following hockey for the first time ever. Going to a local teams game this weekend in tulsa. Kinda hooked on it at this point too. Good job fellas
Those minor league games are so fun. You can get amazing seats for dirt cheap, but it's still very high quality hockey
did u pick an NHL team to follow im w the penguins they are about to hit rebuild years so it'd be cool to watch like, how a franchise goes from having a star like crosby to how they handle a rebuild
@KT22672 I'm kind of in no man's land with a team to zero in on. My best friend is from Minnesota, so I've been following the Wild a little. West Coast teams start so late that it's hard to stay up for the whole game. I like the team in Vegas, Minnesota, and I'm trying to catch the St. Louis. They're kinda close if I wanted to call them my "local team". The Minnesota fans I know have forbidden me to root for the Stars because of how they were pulled from up there down to Dallas. Just soaking it up trying to learn the box scores and the game in general. Go Penguins haha
n65 nahhh, go for the Stars. A rivalry with your friends is always fun lol
I'm just here to offer an obligatory Bettman "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
OK, now I will watch his interview
thanks pat for pushing hockey, been a life long Av's fan, most underrated bad ass sport to watch.
MORE NHL on the show. Please and thanks! Also you should show the Foligno fight with the guy from the Coyotes next week on your segment. Rarely a good decision to dance with a Foligno. Guy's eye was practically swollen shut postgame.
brady tkachuk been on the show yet?? i think ottawa is still struggling but theres a captain superstar that would probably win every fight he might get in and he's barely in his early 20's i believe.
and O’Brien still scored to complete a Gordie Howe hatty with an eye swollen shut. both sides of that make the game what it is!
This might actually be the best interview with Bettman ever. Legit questions, this was sick
0:04 🗣 Booooooo!!!
Mandatory
It's amazing that the NHL is such a great product even Bettman couldn't completely derail it. He tries though
He has. Between DoPS, the outcomes are rigged, punishments are so inconsistent, the betting ads, etc. The league is a joke from what it once was. He has to go
@@jeffreycairns767 Bettman doesn't have authority over player punishments, those are under a separate commission which is run by George Parros, I'm not sure how much influence Bettman has on Parros, if any. I don't think games are rigged, I'm not gonna say they aren't but it's important to note that the NHL legally brands itself as sports competition, meaning it's illegal for them to rig outcomes. The NBA and NFL however brands themselves as sports entertainments, meaning they can legally get away with rigging so long as they're careful with their advertisement products. I do think Bettman has been dreadful when it comes to marketing until recently. He's got a lot of make-up work to do in that department.
@@jeffreycairns767how are outcomes rigged? Lol
@seegee9 What do you mean, how? A ref can easily make deciding factors. Ķicking motion, off-side, goalie interference, another penalty, net dislodged, are just a few ways to disallow a goal. There are lots of ways that refs can control a game, giving 1 team the advantage. It's the same as umps with the strike zone and others sports' refs that get all the say. Fans booing or that disagree with a call means absolutely nothing. It's fairly clear in most games, who they've decided is to win. There's other things too, not just the final score
@@jeffreycairns767 I see bad calls go both ways. So what's their ultimate goal? Who do they want to win? Sounds pretty tin foil hat to me
That was a pretty cool and informative interview with the Comish’
Only a little bummed you didn't hit him with the boos when he first hopped on 😂 but no in all seriousness this was awesome. You guys are awesome. And I know many people will say otherwise, but Gary is awesome for the league and has done an excellent job over the past 6 years or so with expanding the game.
I was just going to say ... Gary was prob bit shook hearing cheers instead of boos 🤣
That was a great interview, well done boys.
Pat is doing a helluva job of promoting the NHL. Hopefully it attracts some football fans to give it a shot as there are a lot if overlapping elements (eg speed, skill, physicality, grit etc)
A freaking HOF NFL punter is really asking tough questions to the Commish. What a freaking interview. Holy cow. As a hockey fan and Pens fan thank you for that.
Totally agree. Betman has nothing to do with the NHL’s success. If anything he's impeded it.
interesting how great it has been for only america... Canada seems to be left out in all great "expansion of the league" talks
@@cndnclassics5874It's a profit based professional league. You don't have the money or population for an expansion. You need to take business 101 and stop being a cuck.😊
@@cndnclassics5874 tired of paying 500 dollars a ticket to see the leafs play. How do we not have another team for southern ontario
Yes, the public would like to believe this
@@cndnclassics5874well Canada is small with small markets besides those that already have teams..should NHL expand to Yukon? Or PEI...please
Love hockey. And now that we have hockey in Seattle the NW has a team to cheer for.
Let’s go Kraken!
It shouldn't have taken this long to have ice hockey over there.
lets go Canucks
Seattle Canucks that is
Way to go PNW brother! Hopefully my Canucks develop a great and fun rivalry with the Kraken in the years to come.
they are not real hockey fans, they didnt boo him when he came on
I don’t comment on CZcams ever but this was the best interview with the commissioner and overall hockey strategy I’ve ever seen
NHL should do a stadium series at TCF Bank in MN. Blair Walsh can drop the puck.
I love hockey, played it from childhood all the way to NCAA and WJC U21. Gretzky came to my hometown, LA and the run to the finals against Habs hooked me and also broke my heart.
I then watched the Wings dynasty of late 90s and early 2000s and loved the class shown by Yzerman and leadership, the skating of Fedorov and his complete game, that team was one for the ages. How can you not love hockey???
Great interview Pat! Hockey is Awesome
You can tell they're new to hockey because they applauded Gary when he came on instead of booing him
They’re in the business of growing the sporty not trying to make it seem like a poverty sport
@@droid142poverty sport slashing the heritage sheesh. You must be cool at parties. How much do i have to pay to be as cool as you?
"Mr. Gary" 😂
I love the hockey is awesome segment, and I would like to make a suggestion that you’ll probably never read. Hockey is a sport rooted in tradition, both in a positive and negative way. With you sending fans to games for the first time, it would be helpful to do a segment on something like “how to not act like a stooge at a hockey game” it’s the best sport in the world and being in on tradition and taboo in the audience makes it the best experience.
We need best on best hockey, Gary is the one stopping the players from the Olympics! Matthew’s has never worn jersey for team USA!
Is it Bettman? Or is it the players?
He has, not the Olympics but he has played for the USA in world juniors which is arguably the more important event
@@FrenchToast_28it is now. But when the Olympics were best on best nothing matters more
@@FrenchToast_28 the world juniors is not a more important event, an Olympic gold medal means way more, not even an argument
@@soulknife20 it’s bettman
Ayyyeeee! Keep spreading the good word Pat.
Hockey is the most unappreciated sport of all time! I see people saying football, basketball, baseball are all better than hockey 😂😂😂😂😂 basketball is overrated and doesn’t compare to hockey, baseball is okay but too boring at times and football is great just like hockey. But nothing beat playoff hockey EVER! I already know the people who disagree with that are either hockey haters or have never paid attention to hockey playoffs and how electric it is! I’ve been to 2 playoff games and every game the crowd goes crazy the entire game
Hey Gary why do you reward the blackhawks with a generational player like Bedard for covering up sexual assault but remove ottawas 1st round draft pick for making an error on a contract?
Exactly what I want to know
Bring back the historic names for both conferences and all divisions. Prince of Wales Conference. Patrick Division.
My old ass dad doesn't even want that.
So no.
That NHL game at The Big House a few years back was amazing.
Love It Pat ThePatMcAfeeShow Bro Let's Gooooooooo.
Pat, you ask better questions than most analysts and commentators than I have seen & heard in my 45 years on this rock. Not gonna lie, I found out about you from WWE and I search specifically for your Hockey is awesome segs.
Look at his rosey cheeks and his head shaking like MJF in turbulence
Hockey is Awesome! the boys could run a 10+ minute interview with any random hockey character from another league, retired player, a coach, analyst and you can get a lot of fun stories and personalities there....the cream at the top right now are right in the thick of their careers every sport is like that with usually watered down interviews if you are mostly focused on winning and chompionshups
Thanks Pat!
NFL is great, mlb is great, nhl is great 🇨🇦🇺🇸 love you boys 🤘🤘 Bettman is not really great..
Coming from Canada, I really don't understand how people don't love hockey. But at the same time, I don't understand how you could be as passionate about football.
Different types of factors and products
Why you dont get the football passion?
In football, The CFL is a whack league next to the NFL where is more profitable, generates more ratings, known worldwide (really doubt anyone outside canada and the us would know at league a team or knows a “grey cup”) therefore, its more attractive also college football is big, don’t think Canada has big names college wise o a league that equals NCAA
If you had a league as close as the NFL i think you would show your passion, but even Canadians get free NFL games on CTV and no CFL with that being said, the answer is obvious one is more attractive
NFL is easier to understand next to the CFL and football here can be played in any weather when we know both sports are expensive.
the season isn’t as long as hockey, and you know Americans dont like low scoring games (eg soccer, hockey)
But what about hockey?
Well as you know we got 5 plus leagues here where as Canada maybe the NHL is the only league that has more presence in other provinces in canada (next is the MLS, but you guys are still years light to become passionate about soccer, even here in the US we been more interested over the last decade)
Then your weather allows it, you guys maybe have 2 and 3 month if you lucky of summer and then the rest of the year is cold which allows the practice of the game
Even here in the northern states, it gets warm in later april early may to maybe late september october that is somehow a long summer.
Over here the stanley cup rarely gets attention, I bet you for sure if the final was edmonton vs toronto
People here wont care
So if you guys where saturated by other sports or have professional leagues that equals the level to the ones in the us. You will understand it, and this is coming from a hockey fan
Gary sounds exactly like my dentist
Interesting timing, considering what happened last weekend.
I was thinking the same. 🤔
What happened?
👀
Worst commissioner in sports. Should've been fired in 99. But now ain't bad either. & take Parros with you.
Ever on the edge of your chair and the interviewer never asks the question you are begging to hear an answer too? Not with Pat Mcafee, what a legend.
That was the most human I have ever seen the Commish. I'm now lowering the odds of him being a robot to 99%
Agree with this ultimate safety issue we never talk about 🇨🇦🇺🇸🌐
Quebec city please !! don't kill hockey in Canada we started this sport
Bettman is just as much a tool as other US Sporting commissioners
I think Bettman is far worse
Need a Canadian Commissioner who actually played in the league.
@@brandonb9978 It doesn't matter where the Commissioner is from, all that matters is that, whoever it is, they let everything be played properly and not rig ANYTHING in any teams favor. Every team should have an honest shot at the cup, every year.
Man it's weird seeing him look so old. I used to hate his face perching in the box during playoffs 😂 bro reminded me of Mr Burns
Living in a hockey town is AWESOME. (Even more so right after you with the Cup 😊)
Best session!
Nice job Pat
10:58 except the sharks lmao
hockey is the best sport in the world it’s about time someone in the main stream sees that!! thanks pat
Elbow guards! 😂
Toneeee had some great questions and points
Then pay the players what they should be getting paid
LET'S GO PAT
Players / Coaches don't talk like other leagues because of gag orders that come straight from Bettmans office!
Thanks Pat 👍 I love how you are giving the NHL some shine. And..thanks Gary for growing the game. Well done commissioner👏
Would love for Bettman to care a little more about the teams that are north of the border...
Without Bettman, and the salary cap, there would be only 2 teams in Canada. Lets imagine teams like Toronto and New York with a 180 million dollar roster....now think of Winnipeg, or Edmonton.
@@sommebuddyIt's not about the salary cap, it's the other bs
Wtf is bettman smoking?! Thinking a new arena is going to help them? Last i knew they were in a high school arena and couldnt even sell THAT PLACE out which was only 5k fans🤣
Became the Commissioner the same year the Last Canadian Team one the Cup, Such an Odd Coincidence eh?
Who knew that pat was the one to get arizona to move to Salt Lake city. Hell yeah brother 👍
Is that warning on all of the shows😂😂
What the Coyotes are doing for youth hockey in the Valley is incredible. Every weekend kids are learning to skate and shoot a puck…year round!
THE BEST way to grow.
Plus a huge sports town.
Now, get a stadium!
‘If you build it, they will come ‘
My finish grandfather said love, hockey puch face pull hair 😂🇨🇦🇺🇸
*Finnish
Please please please have Jared Keeso on for hockey talk. Please please please
Pat l think you should add a sweater/uniform segment into hockey is awesome
Good stuff big boot
Luck to have a guy that moved the needle like Crosby in Pittsburgh
Go Wings Go baby you can't knock it;)
Yep, they were 2 seconds (or should I say 2 draft picks, Crosby,Malkin) away from from moving to Winnipeg, luckily Atlanta fumbled another NHL team and we got the Jets back
One way to not turn off new fans is during the All-Star activities; get rid of the hokey crap that surrounds it. It is really cringe-worthy. Bring back 5 v 5 hockey for it as well, you have all-star goalies and defensemen there, let them shine as well. We get it, you want Connor and Austin to score a million goals, but doesnt that just make your all-star goalies look bad?
Yes, and go back to the BEST players, not 1 player from each team bs. The current way cheapens the accomplishments
"We're Talkin' Hockey" 🎵
i only buy the attendance thing because there’s more teams then ever coming off of covid. arenas are not full in good markets.
In 04, they were like, look. Someone besides the redwings has to win some games. Let's change some things.
Can't shut this guy down 😂🇨🇦🇺🇸
17:00 I assume that there was a lot more fighting in hockey in the 1970s than today. That's when there were a lot of on ice team brawls which inspired the movie "Slap Shot." In the 1980s they cleaned that up. o
I miss the 90's and really 2000's.
Let the players go to the Olympics or have a annual World Cup of hockey
Great question 😆🇨🇦🇺🇸🌐
Greatest battle on Ice🇨🇦😆🥊
Funniest thing is pat saying people dont know hockey like he knows it lmfaoo
Worst commish in all major leagues
They need to grow the game with televising the lower level games so it’s easier to follow player before they get to the NHL. NFL and NBA have great hype at the NCAA level where you see the players before they make it to the pros. The NHL and MLB are really lacking at that. If they could change that it would help increase the NHL’s popularity. If Bedard played basketball or football everyone would’ve seen his games. I’ve never seen a AHL or CHL, etc. game on TV.
Shaht aht to Gary for not stopping so Pat could interrupt him when talking about the Olympics
I know one way to make it even better.
They can't have fighting in the NBA because someone would run to the locker room and bring back a gun to start shooting.
Love 😂🇺🇸🇨🇦this
When we get beat we fight here😆🇨🇦🥊
As a Ukrainian, and due to bettman's promotion of putinteam, I've ahd no choice but to cease all interest I had in NHL. It's to point that if bettman ever comes to ukraine, he should be seen as no different than average russian soldier.
Bettman is such a snake, right after this interview he went out and screwed Ottawa super hard. I get its a business, but for a lot of us hockey used to be more than just the dollar.
Gotta get pasta on
Bettman bringing up expansion without really being asked about it... He's all about it.
Bettman does a great job playing the villain role. He's done a great job of fulfilling his mandate, growing the game in the US.
Whether he's the man to take the game to the next level is another matter.
@ 7:00 The Vancouver Grizzlies never stood a chance.
They deserve the recognition and a real opportunity to have a team back in the NBA.
I just can’t grasp why he insists on lying to us like we’re idiots. All it takes is to say hey, 28 of our teams could compete any given year. We’ve got some major problems in Arizona, where we can’t fill a college rink, and a few other mismanaged teams that we’re working on. 90% of the league is good, blatantly lying about the 10% that sucks is insulting to listen to.
Make more games start earlier and it'll help a ton with promoting the game to the rest of the world
You guys almost made Gary seem human.
Give it to Bettman . How many commissioners would come on the show
Gary: Give Pat some money and encourage him to do even better work than he already is doing. Don't take advantage of his generosity.
Yasssssss hockey is awesome
PK regular guest on the show would be hype
So kool🇨🇦🇺🇸😁
SKATERS 4 NHL 2:45
Bettman helped hockey grow enourmously, but it was at the depend of real fans. The cup is now won at places that didnt even know the rules and history of hockey. Bandwagonings fans for the new teams... five years later those arenas are half empty while there are poorer cities eatind and living hockey that are left whitout team. almost like if it were london vs paris in the superbowl every year while the lions left detroit to play in Roma(italia)
