Envy Brits having only 6 weeks to suffer. US elections are now 24/7, 365 days a year....and not agreed once all ballots are counted. If one survives to the next inauguration day the media pivots immediately to the 2028 Presidential election.

Yes the system in the USA always seemed daft maybe the larger the country the longer the campaign. We also say in USA politics is either right wing with Democrats or very right wing with Republicans. I think Keir Starmer would get on better with Joe than Trump. Nigel Farage the Brexit supporting UK MEP has been offered a job with Trump apparently.

Plus once the election has been held (barring the very small chance a coalition will need to be negotiated) the removal trucks will be at the door the very next day to remove Sunak's stuff and bring in Starmer's things and the new administration will be up and running immediately, no ten or eleven hiatus like there is in the US.

Most British people would be happy if politicians could only campaign for three weeks. We don't allow campaign commercials on TV and candidates can only ask people for votes in the campaign window. Individual candidates are only allowed to spend £54,000/$67,000 and parties can't spend more than £34 million in a full-term general election. In a snap election like this candidates can't spend more than around £25,000 (£17,000 + 8p per registered voter or 12p in rural areas).

Another difference in our system is that, outside of a hung parliament (in which no party has absolute control and negotiations have to take place) the election day and new government forming all take place in 24 hours. The leader of the winning party goes to the king to form a new government - there is no month before an inauguration.

A few years ago the UK spent £2.6m on a room to hold press conferences in at 9 Downing Street. Next door to No. 10. I think this was inspired by the press room which the US President uses. Rishi Sunak might well have been Chancellor when the bill arrived for this facility. A bit odd that instead of using that Rishi stood in the rain. I think there must be a problem with the water in London. People who worked for the Post Office cannot remember anything and they were mainly based in London and Rishi is living in London and had forgotten about the press room. I despair.
