Another factor on why the community has kept this game alive is probably because of the Uber Update with TF2 going Free To Play.
If TF2 never went Free To Play, I think the game would’ve been on the brink of death and I’m thankful that hasn’t happened since it’s introduced thousands of players and CZcamsrs into the game like me, Uncle Dane and SoundSmith just to name a few.

As someone who played before the Über update, i strongly agree with that.
Many of my friends probably would not have played the game, wich leaves me in the dark and thuss kind of getting tierd of the game and leaving it at some point.
Probably i would not even could have last untill the love and war update.
StickMaster500 I have nearly 5.5K hours in TF2 and I wouldn’t have downloaded it if it wasn’t f2p. Thank god for the Uber update, TF2 would have been dead years ago without it.

Careful, tf2 isn't the best community, only thing that irks me is the toxicity. The only community with the smallest amount of toxicity, is definitely warframe.

@@connorl2909 still wont prevent them from killing you quickly. When they see you they will back up, scope in and shoot. That's going to change almost nothing to him. It will just make pro snipers show their location for half a second. The headshot ability makes sniper good. And even if they need to wait for 2 seconds to be able to headshot you can still get killed quickly. Sniper would be a ranged spy tbh. A class that is useful when there is a big with or a small amount of distraction.

TF2 is not TF2 without the mercs, the characters, the development, the updates, and most of all
the people who kept it all those 11 years, the community.
I'm glad there are people who realize TF2 isnt a game without a community. Great Job.

That doesn’t mean Valve doesn’t try to keep it alive.
Jungle Inferno may have been a long time ago, but Valve is just waiting for the time to strike for the Heavy update.

Why can’t valve just realize how important TF2 is and the potential it STILL has in so many ways
Their whole 'work on what you want' mentality of running the workplace has gotten them nowhere in recent memory, it'd be fantastic if they learned it isn't exactly helping them. Unfortunately because of how successful Steam is they'll never see the financial backlash of conducting business so poorly.

Aren't we all? I feel like all the Valve games (and Blizzard) have one overarching theme: a strong community. CS 1.5 still has a community, Portal (and 2) still have communities, and even half life has an active community. This is what companies like Epic Games will never understand, and I hope the notion of a strong community with full control over the game will be revived in the future/

I got back in january after 3 years of not playing TF2. Im not regretting any second of it.
I never think of myself being myself without those TF2 experiences. I wish one day, Valve will take a look at TF2 seriously again. Cause this deserves.
What about fangame creators? :c I know there's not many, but there's some and they're good! Like Cart Crawlers, and even my own fangames like Overtime and Hotline Fortress (go check them out nudge nudge wink wink).
I find the concept of turning a video game into yet more video games very fascinating, and not just because I make my own games. There's just something to taking a concept that works and applying it to a different context. Like Doom Roguelike, which is almost the complete opposite of Doom's gameplay, yet still works very well. And the same goes for TF2 fangames, the classes are just so unique and can be applied to many different situations in games!

Props to TF2Maps, Extine & LuckyLuke, KritzKast, Dane, Froyotech, and HIGPS for keeping it real after so many years. And serious props to the recent Halloween mapmakers. Cursed Cove overtook Borneo as my favorite map. I wish it were available all year.

At 11:18 i kinda disagree about "Mr. Quackers" because the game takes place in 1968 and this gasmask is very similar (and i don't know if it's official but i think the creator got inspired from it) to the "Mickey Mouse mask" which is basicly just a normal gasmask but it's decorated as if it was Mickey Mouse or just a "cute" animal, it was made for childrens while WW2 so yeah it's kinda legit i think. (Sorry if someone already said it)

I never considered that.... gasmasks for children... but it makes sense, during a war that lasts for many years and could feature gas attacks or firebombing of civilian urban areas, that gas masks have to be manufactured for children as well.

The TF2 community has to ve one of the vest game communities i ever came across. They kept making SFMs, Gmods, and custom items and maps to give Valve new ideas. If only we got new weapons more often.

that would be a great way to handle all sorts of items too , just like the grappling hook is just for 1 mode , make certain items like the phlog only for certain modes too , same with meme items

btw I'd love there to be a cosmetic setting in tf2 with 3 versions that you can tick only one:
1. Team Fortress 2 Cosmetics (Only cosmetics the tf2 team would think, fit the tf2 world)
2. All Cosmetics (Any cosmetic will show)
3. No Cosmetics. (All cosmetics will be turned off)
All these settings will only affect the player, so if someone has a hat and they want to see it; they can, just not that player. The unusual effects will be missing from option 1 and 3 as they were not really part of the tf2 lore beyond references.
This would also be useful in competitive should someone want less distractions or immersion breaking.
That's actually a great idea. Although a lot of debate would happen for the TF2 cosmetics option, everyone would be satisfied in the end.
If there was an option to hide unusuals and cosmetics, they wouldn't be as desirable anymore. Valve would never do that.

Then again, this hide option is purely client-side, meaning it affects you and only you. The hats are still there for everyone, it's just you choose if you want them on or not.
I'm sure they'll still be desired as this only affects that 1 person, not the server but I do get what you mean. Seeing that cool hat in a server makes it more known and wanted just by knowing it's there. Then again, clutter someone with unusual effects and it becomes less special.
It's a double-edged knife. Now if they had beta servers to test this stuff like they used to; we'd get to see how many want it over those that don't, to test and try it out before any confirmed release.

It was made by Bad Robot (It was made by Saber Studios) and they had support by valve. But Yeah it's still ignored by the same Community.
I think it was more of a collaboration between the two companies, if I recall correctly. Not exactly the case of it being outsourced, as Valve was still involved in the final product.

Also I like the hand it to the community idea like the respected members like UEAK Crash, Sedimentary Socks, The Winglet, Potato ( The one who made Memes vs. Machines, Operation Canteen Crasher, and future Madness vs. Machines), Delfy (for finding bugs), etc.

Random story time. Last night in Badwater on defense, team had no medic so I switched and to my genuine surprise there was this one lime scout constantly spamming E (no surprise here) but also thanked me via voice chat EVERY SINGLE TIME I healed him, and later I realized the reason I spotted him so frequently was also because he tended to stay close to me and offered some oh-so-rare protection. It was so precious, to think a lime scout would do that. Its these rare, funny and heartwarming moments against common stereotypes that help me restore my faith in this community. Thank you lime scout.
For me, TF2 was the gateway to the wider world of PC gaming. I remember when I was a kid, and I usually just played on my Xbox, then a friend introduced me to TF2, which got me hooked. After that I played TF2 almost exclusively (on PC, still played Xbox) for a year or two. And with time, I found new games and communities that I loved. With it's simple, yet deep gameplay, initially friendly community, the funny characters and the years worth of (community) content, it's really easy to fall in love with.

Excellent work as always. Many other games fall out of favor, and while there are a few modern ones that future generations may regard as nostalgic, TF2 is unlike anything I've ever seen. There is just so much to do - and that variation in gameplay sets it apart from any other game. I've seen good games die off when abandoned by the developer and the community. I've also seen games that rely solely on the developers for content, and thus are disappointed when nothing changes or nothing good comes to the game. The fact that TF2 can break that cycle is just one more thing that makes it special.

I think I have an idea. Maybe valve could make a submission page on their website and people could submit their update ideas through that site and people could upvote the ones they liked and then the tf team could moderate the most liked submissions and implement the ones that would make a good update .for an example the people who want the community made frontline update could upvote that submission on the page and then valve would look at the top 100 submissions and implement them to the game.

the community and tf2 vids got me into tf2 now I play a meta medic (I mostly enjoy using the meta tools of medic) and a meme demo using the canon, jumper and caber

How about the TFteam hosts a contest for the community, the participant's job Is to create the best video, poster, sfm, model, map, ect... and have the community vote on which of the selection is the best for each section, the winner for the top 3 will be granted a job within the TFteam's office, kinda like the saxxy awards, but bigger and has a greater reward, and I'm sure Valve has enough to pay these people, once Gabe finishes washing his car with 200 ice cream Sundays, or whatever he does with his money.

thanks for the shoutout! :D to add to what you said about valve paying the community, they already give revenue for workshop items and in some situations buy assets outright, so I cant imagine it'd be much of a hurdle for them
Thanks for the insight! I knew you guys received some sort of revenue but I wasn’t sure how much. I think they would just have some issues hiring “community creators” full time since Valve is really odd about their practices and “forcing” people to chose a project to work on.
@@SkyminSlash for sure, I think they've noted it in the past that hiring people to solely work on TF2 would be an issue. however they have also contracted people from the community to work on specific stuff before so it's not totally out of the question in that regard i feel. i'd very much like a return of community updates but it doesnt seem likely :(
Without kitty0706, I wouldnt have ever found out about tf2. Like many people, I saw team fabulous 2 and my life changed. Rest well kitty, we all miss you.
I think If valve was going to hand over the game to specific community members I think the should Have class specific people like sound for soldier,sketch for pyro (I know what he did but the dude knows how pyro works more than a lot of people)

When i first saw TF2, i expected a normal game (I actually wanted to play Overwatch but i didnt want to pay for it) then i found out, that its not just a game. Through these years i watched a lots of animations played a lot of mods and im still not bored. Use of the game and these 9 characters are unlimited. Its really incredible game with amazing community that makes it even better. Of course VALVE seems doing nothing but i at least believe that theyre finishing the Heavy update

I'm not sure if I can consider myself part of the TF2 community (I don't really play the game), but I do watch a lot of TF2 content on CZcams. TF2 just has a great charm that attracts me to it.
