For majority of the football fans Messi is the deserved winner. But, for some other fans, Haaland is the one, but I think Messi needed to win it for the perfect closure to his time in Europe.

Actually Messi did won the Ballon D'or as an Inter Miami player, because the season they considered ends in July, so Messi played and won at least 2 games ( vs Cruz Azul and Atlanta United) with Inter Miami for this Ballon D'or.
You're right! I guess the point I was trying to make is that his World Cup success was the main driver of him winning the Ballon D'or, but I mean... That last minute free kick against Cruz Azul certainly doesn't hurt 😂

Idk, I talked to a lot of fans at all of Messi's away games across the USA this past MLS season and almost every person I talked to had admiration for him. But, you may be right in the fact that we should realize and appreciate just how privileged we are to have him here when he could have gone anywhere around the world

I knew it would be a long-shot asking people outside a BASEBALL game, but I wanted to see if MAYBE any of them knew. When we went to the MLS match, almost everybody knew the award, especially the young fans

Traditionally, in every team Messi is in, he present his individual trophy. He should present it in Inter Miami/MLS. He wasn’t able to present the World Cup trophy in PSG for political reason. I hope he will be able to present it together with his Ballon D’or. It will be a fitting tribute to the man, Lionel Messi.

They changed that rule since 95. That’s why George Weah and Ronaldo Nazario won it.
You would have been correct at one point, but according to my research, the criteria was changed in 2007 so that any male professional player around the world would be eligible for the award, which would explain why Neymar finished 10th in the Ballon D'or voting in 2011 while playing for Santos in Brazil, which is not in Europe. And as far as I know, this worldwide eligibility has not been changed since. Thanks for your comment though!

Before today, no current MLS player had ever won the Ballon d'Or. Several past winners have ended their careers in the United States, but Lionel Messi is the first to win the award while actively playing in the league.
Not only is he the first MLS player to win it, he is also the first and only player in the history to win it not playing in Europe.
