  • Nature, nurture heaven and home
    Sum of all, and by them, driven
    To conquer every mountain shown
    But I've never crossed the river
    Braved the forests, braved the stone
    Braved the icy winds and fire
    Braved and beat them on my own
    Yet I'm helpless by the river
    Angel, angel, what have I done?
    I've faced the quakes, the wind, the fire
    I've conquered country, crown, and throne
    Why can't I cross this river?
    Angel, angel, what have I done?
    I've faced the quakes, the wind, the fire
    I've conquered country, crown, and throne
    Why can't I cross this river?
    Pay no mind to the battles you've won
    It'll take a lot more than rage and muscle
    Open your heart and hands, my son
    Or you'll never make it over the river
    It'll take a lot more than words and guns
    A whole lot more than riches and muscle
    The hands of the many must join as one
    And together we'll cross the river
    It'll take a lot more than words and guns
    A whole lot more than riches and muscle
    The hands of the many must join as one
    And together we'll cross the river
    (Nature, nurture heaven and home)
    It'll take a lot more than words and guns
    (Sum of all, and by them, driven)
    A whole lot more than riches and muscle
    (To conquer every mountain shown)
    The hands of the many must join as one
    And together we'll cross the river
    (Braved the forests, braved the stone)
    It'll take a lot more than words and guns
    (Braved the icy winds and fire)
    A whole lot more than riches and muscle
    (Braved and beat them on my own)
    The hands of the many must join as one
    And together we'll cross the river
    And together we'll cross the river
    And together we'll cross the river
    Nature, nurture heaven and home
    And together we'll cross the river
    And together we'll cross the river
    Nature, nurture heaven and home
    And together we'll cross the river
    And together we'll cross the river

    Sing out loud the last two sentences of this incredibly beautiful song: "The Hands of the many must join as one, and together we'll cross the river." Can you imagine singing a song like this for our Nation's anthem? The change in consciousness would be instantaneously and the ripple effects would benefit the entire Universe.
    Take care of yourselves, safe journey, and
    Much Love

      Hope you are doing good brother. I know our planet is filled with sorrow, but we must not lose ourselves. I am struggling myself everyday about the troubles of this planet, i get really sad about people dying, child abuse scandals here and there and lose my sleep over it. Sometimes i think suicide as a way out, but i must go on. We as good hearted people, should not die unless, it is our time to die. You are needed here my dear brother. My comments seems stupid even to me. I don't really know what to say. I hope you that you have crossed the river! Take care!

    I heard a portion of this just now when my son sent me a Fall of Cybertron trailer. As soon as I heard the opening lines which was the chorus, I immediately said "this is my new favourite song" It is beautiful, not only in melody but also in meaning and story. The images that you put with this make it a massively amazing song that I will listen to more times tonight as I learn the lyrics.
    Thank you for sharing this ten years ago.

    I've listened to this song for years, and before now I had never paired it with the experiences of war. Lyrically it makes sense, which is a good literal representation of course. Although, I'm pretty sure this song is wayyy more metaphorical than people believe it to be. It's open to interpretation though.

      its human nature to take up arms against a perceived threat. That's how we survived this long as a species ...the thing is now there is nothing left to fight against for survival so we turn that energy towards each other. If Aliens invaded us and turned every human on the planet into cattle ...then we would lay down our differences and unite as one....maybe we need that to happen.

    Do people here really think this song glorifies the military in any way, shape, or form? Or supports war? This song is an INDICTMENT against war and the military. The meaning is clear; you can attack, murder and conquer any nation you please, you can fight however long and establish the greatest empire, but you will NEVER reach divine utopia through war and conquering. That requires peace, reconciliation, and a willing to stand with your fellow man in solidarity in order to reach heaven. Maynard has always criticized the military-industrial complex.

Anyone can be in need of soul searching... in the song he says I've concurred country crown and throne... we all have battles on the outside... it doesnt matter what you've done when you start doing battle on the inside. It's harder to defeat your own ignorance... aka cross the river..

    Your video is outstanding & goes hand-in-hand with this is amazing song -- to which, the combined work brings back childhood memories of my father going off to war for several years & friends of mine's fathers coming home in body bags. The after effects of war often last a lifetime for those that survive and those close to them. It influenced me greatly as evidenced by a few of my songs. Maynard James Keenan is an amazing artist.

    • @Mr4433
      @Mr4433 Před 9 lety +3

      For me, this song is about the mental transition one makes into true leadership; and secondly accomplishing main goals through those you lead.
      For example in the lyrics, "Braved the forests, braved the stone, Braved the icy, winds and fire, Braved and beat them on my own, Yet I'm helpless by the river"
      ----This to me is not the literal forests, stone, ice, wind and fire. He goes into saying "Braved and beat them on my own"---- Meaning, he is focused on himself only. All the accomplishments "HE" has made, thinking of only himself; and realizing how helpless he is by this "river"/mental transition into leadership.- You can only know how helpless you are when looking back at how selfish you were.
      Then to drive that home he goes into self reflection; "Angel, angel, what have I done?(nothing) I've faced the quakes, the wind, the fire, I've conquered country, crown, and throne, Why can't I cross this river?"- Again, I.I.I.. I’ve been that guy, looking back, its very much the question your subconscious speaks, “Why can’t I cross this river???” Why cant I think about the big picture? Why couldn't i be less selfish? Why couldn't I do an ego check? I've done everything; what’s wrong? But its only when you cross that mental river that you can see your past self struggling on the other side.
      Then the goals of the many, "Pay no mind to the battles you've won, it'll take a lot, more than rage and muscle, Open your heart and hands, my son, Or you'll never make it over the river, It'll take a lot more than words and guns, A whole lot more than riches and muscle, The hands of the many must join as one, And together we'll cross the river"--Meaning, everyone has to be headed in the same direction to cross; mentally this is how its done, those that don't join in the same mission will not cross(choose to go elsewhere), or drown (forced out), to the benefit of a group sharing a common mission
      Pretty deep song; means a lot to me.

This song is like the world's best piece of advice.

    Clearly this "river" that Maynard speaks of is that thing that we call life. He's talking about crossing that river into the forest past the liquid light. Into the unknown. Some people might call it Heaven, others the divine, I call it the imagination.

    • @Mattchu025
      @Mattchu025 Před 10 lety +2

      I thought of "the river" as peace. You are victorious in battle but yet you can't conquer peace.

    • @jacknya8164
      @jacknya8164 Před 10 lety +2

      The river is nirvana, read the lyrics and you will see it is explaining that to cross the river into enlightenment you must forget your earthly triumphs and lose your sense of self. Maynard has always written about reaching a singularity in humanity.

    • @pilesjoursh1111
      @pilesjoursh1111 Před 10 lety +1

      The truth is the river is what ever it is you want it to be and it is nothing. Good music and artists make you form your own opinions and to think critically for youself i will agree that maynard does push for awareness of the All-oneness
